Far Too Cute

Interestingly, Mrs. TK and I were just at a resort outside of Seattle for a wedding that we both agreed reminded us of Dirty Dancing. I idly wondered how many of the young guys working there ended up nailing the guests daughters, and she pondered whether they broke out into spontaneous dance routines… and got abortions.

Why do I bring this up? One, to rub in the fact that I was on vacation, and two, because of the references found in the trailer for Heartbreaker, aka L’arnacœur. It’s a French film about a brother and sister team (Romain Duris and Julie Ferrier) who specialize in breaking up relationships for money. So they’re essentially gigantic assholes, except that they only do it when the woman in the relationship is “not knowingly unhappy.”

They’re hired by a rich dude to break up his daughter’s (Vanessa Paradis) relationship, and only have 10 days to do so before her wedding. As Duris begins to learn all about her… well, this is gonna come as a shock but, they begin to fall for each other.

I know, right? Totally unpredictable.

Much as it pains me to admit, this actually looks rather fun. Despite the presence of three of my least favorite things (Dirty Dancing references, George Michael songs, and the French), it just appears to have that kind of breezy enjoyability that can sometimes suck you in. It’s apparently getting good reviews overseas as well, so who knows.

Heartbreaker will get a limited release in US theaters in September. Oh, and second shockerooni for you: It’s been optioned for an English-language remake.

"It’s been optioned for an English-language remake."

But of course!

And cue all the nasty comments about gap-toothed women, the betes noirs of Pajiba.

This looks cute and all but I really cannot care unless it's about someone breaking up her relationship with Johnny Depp.

God damn my love for the French. And terrible rom-coms. And gap-toothed women.

It was delightfully fun without being too far up in the clouds about love. It was the first film I saw with Mrs. Johnny Depp (Vanessa Paradis). She is so extraordinarily tiny and cute.

As for the english remake, which is completely unnecessary as usual, Duris in an interview said he wanted Will Smith to play his character. I feel like he doesn't understand what this really means because he's French.

It looks like every other romcom, but so oddly appealing.
Maybe it's just because the last French film I saw was Amelie, I expect that they're all that good.
Either way, I approve.

This was indeed great fun.

Yes, like 99% of rom-coms the plot is entirely predictable and that trailer up there gives most of it away. But Duris and Paradis ooze class, and there is top-notch comedic support from Julie Ferrier and François Damiens as his sister & brother-in-law.

Recommended to make you feel sunny inside.

He reminds me of the vampire in Being Human.

BWeaves: yes, and that's partly why now I want to see it. :-D

I saw this in France a couple of months ago. Hadn't laughed like that in a long, long time. Mostly thanks to Romain Duris, who makes everything worth watching, even that Molière movie.

Just gone off cinemas here in the UK. Yes, the trailer's so sickening it hurts, but the movie itself is goddamn brilliant. Hilarious, sexy, and very French and silly. The sister and brother-in-law are the Jack and Karen of the whole thing. Loved it. It's on the DVD list, and only special movies get on the Laurie DVD list.

Even with a trailer as shitty as that one with the god awful voiceover, I can see the signs of a good movie fighting off the crappy presentation. Looks fun.

It's a lovely little film. Such a change from the all misogynistic crap masquerading as rom coms ie any Heigl film. It's charming, romantic & funny.
