The Darkest Time Is Upon Us All

halfbloodprince.jpg

We have the third trailer for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince below. This particular installment of the Harry Potter franchise, I understand, needed to excise a lot of the book (it makes little sense to me that they are making Book 7 into two movies, when it’s book 6 that really warrants the two books). Half-Blood Prince is actually my favorite of the series; it’s sort of the Empire Strikes Back of the franchise. In it, Draco goes fully evil, Snape may or may not finally go to the dark side, and Ron deals with his hormones.

David Yates (the BBC’s “State of Play”) directs, as he did the previous installment, and as he will the final two. Here’s the trailer:

I MUST get some new speakers. I'm tired of all the trailers I watch at work not being talkies.

Posted by: superEdna at April 17, 2009 10:42 AM

Umm... pardon my nerdom, but wasn't Sirius dead by Book 6?

Posted by: SJ at April 17, 2009 10:43 AM

I can't stand the books, but I love the movies. And the little Weasley is starting to get hot.

Posted by: admin at April 17, 2009 10:44 AM

Didn't notice that SJ, but he is indeed dead. Indeed.

Posted by: superEdna at April 17, 2009 10:46 AM

Holy fucking shit.

Posted by: Kolby at April 17, 2009 10:47 AM

I'm pretty sure he means (Trust) Snape.

Posted by: Jay at April 17, 2009 10:47 AM

Hey, you keep your mitts off Ginny, sleazo! Not since Rosa Saks have I been as sad that someone didn't exist.

Posted by: Jay at April 17, 2009 10:51 AM

OMG chills. I can't wait, I can't wait, I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!

Posted by: Whorish Mouth at April 17, 2009 10:52 AM

Oops. Yes. Snape. I meant Snape.

Posted by: Dustin Rowles at April 17, 2009 10:54 AM

Oh how I hate how summers make me look forward to them. They seem to do it every year.

"Ahhhh, February's so nice"
"Seen any fun movies lately?"
".........shut up!"

At least one of the DH movies'll be in November again.

Posted by: Jay at April 17, 2009 10:58 AM

Oh and yeah, that's a badass trailer. Here's hoping there's a bit of the Gaunt family in there.

Posted by: Jay at April 17, 2009 11:00 AM

Ooh, I hope so too, Jay!

Posted by: Kolby at April 17, 2009 11:03 AM

I am so damned excited. I might reread it for fusnies this weekend.

Posted by: Julie at April 17, 2009 11:14 AM

I'm so excited I may bifurcate all over myself.

Posted by: superEdna at April 17, 2009 11:15 AM

Jeez, I just turned off the vacuum as I put away my Hippogriff furry costume in a space bag. Now I gotta sort that out and make a quick run to the store for another bottle of Gold Bond. It's crazy hot inside that thing and it always gives my undercarriage a stingy heat rash.

How else am I gonna score hot Jr. High chicks?

Posted by: bucslim at April 17, 2009 11:17 AM

How else am I gonna score hot Jr. High chicks?

Glitter. Lots of glitter. Maybe an old timey baseball uniform.

Posted by: Jay at April 17, 2009 11:21 AM

So...the new Hogwarts class is made up of 27 year olds?

Posted by: Keith at April 17, 2009 11:23 AM

No, that's just what kids look like these days. It's scary.

Posted by: Jay at April 17, 2009 11:25 AM

And that Gryffindor girl with the big eyes who was in a few scenes in 4 and 5...is it appropriate to look at her? I don't know! Maybe 16, maybe 22...you just can't tell anymore!

Posted by: Jay at April 17, 2009 11:26 AM

I'm not exactly the biggest Potter fan, but that trailer is pretty damn cool. Only criticism--needs more Snape.

Posted by: DeadBessie at April 17, 2009 11:30 AM

I should've added the HP movies to my list of things I don't care about. They're trailers are always pretty good, though.

Posted by: jM at April 17, 2009 11:33 AM

What are they rating these movies anyway? Was the last one PG-13? You'd think this one'd have to be, it's so dark and scary.

Posted by: Kolby at April 17, 2009 11:35 AM

I'm still not sure how I feel about the movie. The book was just hundreds of pages of Harry, Ron, and Hermione yelling at each other and angsting everywhere. Is there anyway they can edit them out of the movie and just leave the Voldemort flashbacks and Jim Broadbent in?

Posted by: claire at April 17, 2009 11:38 AM

Broadbent - (snicker snicker)

Posted by: bucslim at April 17, 2009 11:47 AM

The book was just hundreds of pages of Harry, Ron, and Hermione yelling at each other and angsting everywhere.

I thought that was "Order of the Phoenix".

Posted by: Jay at April 17, 2009 11:48 AM

I second "Needs more Snape."

I personally need more Ron Weasley. I must go shower now.

Posted by: BWeaves at April 17, 2009 11:49 AM

Anyone else thing "Broadbent" sounds like an ED symptom? Broadbent Jimmy sounds even more like you need Cialis.

Work with me people, I'm not exactly doing Chaucer here.

Posted by: bucslim at April 17, 2009 11:53 AM

Never gets old but here we go once again...

Snape kills Dumbledore!!!

Posted by: RonnyK at April 17, 2009 11:56 AM

I will not watch this movie. The last one was among the worst movies I've ever seen (that I didn't block out, anyway), and yeah, I really liked the book. One of these days, when I am Jesus, I will make my own Harry Potter movies with popsicle sticks and glue, and the world will know my majesty.

Posted by: Lucas at April 17, 2009 11:57 AM

It's gotta be wrong how excited I get watching these trailers (and, of course, the movies).

Posted by: Cindy at April 17, 2009 11:59 AM

The cave looks EXACTLY like I imagined it. Holy crap does this look great! And thank god it's after my wedding this summer - I'd hate to have to step out of my wedding or something. Priorities, after all.

Posted by: Josie at April 17, 2009 12:01 PM

At least it wasn't hundreds and hundreds of pages of CAMPING. I hope they cut most of that.

Apparently the Gaunts were cut from HBP. :( Bah.

I love how much interaction (for want of a better word) there seems to be with the muggle world now. Loved the sight gag with Dumbledore and the perfume ad, and the destruction of the Millenium Bridge. This is srz bznz, after all...

Agree with the needs more Snape. Also needs more Luna, Lupin and McGonagall! (Can't they just cut the Trio?)

Posted by: Linda at April 17, 2009 12:13 PM

Looks good. Still don't like Michael Gambon as Dumbledore, alas.

Posted by: Carrie at April 17, 2009 12:21 PM

Shoving aside my other idiotic comments, this is one hell of a trailer. Hans Gruber never looked so badass.

Posted by: bucslim at April 17, 2009 12:39 PM

Lucas Tap Dancing Christ. TSFSRT......

Posted by: Janey at April 17, 2009 12:45 PM

PS.
That's Some Funny Shit Right There.

Posted by: Janey at April 17, 2009 12:45 PM

Snape kills Dumbledore!!!

GASP!
Oh noes, now I iz spoiled!
You bastard!!!!1111!!!!

Posted by: Jules at April 17, 2009 12:46 PM

I'm not sure if this is sad or not, but that trailer leaves me breathless with anticipation. Breathless, I tell you. Can it be July now?

Posted by: lizzieborden at April 17, 2009 12:56 PM

Completely agree that the 6th book deserved a two movie treatment. I also agree that the angst and bickering is incredibly annoying, but I get where JKR was going with it. I too would be annoyed and confused if everyone thought the teenage me was their savior. Hell, if the deadly danger had tits, the 16 year old me would've tried to lure it into my '88 Cavalier's backseat and finger bang it instead of saving the world.

Posted by: Kballs at April 17, 2009 1:03 PM

Well hang on, Lizzie. I'm looking forward to May a lot. Then we can skip June.

Awww, poor white trash wizards. Sorry, Gaunts.

Posted by: Jay at April 17, 2009 1:04 PM

every. fucking. time.

the trailers for the HP movies give me goosebumps and i get suckered right the fuck in only to be left pissed and broken hearted.

here's hoping epic fail can be avoided coz this looks fucking awesome!

Posted by: joyeetargh at April 17, 2009 1:06 PM

I can't wait!! I think I may have to re-read it to get me in the mood again and catch me up on the story. I loves me some Harry Potter. He's getting hotter and hotter with each movie....

Posted by: Wormer at April 17, 2009 1:25 PM

Snape kills Dumbledore!

Snape is really a woman!

I went "AAAH!" at the kiss. Oh, boy.

Though I have to say I HATE the smoke wisps. They look like the Lost monster.

OH MY GOD THIS LOOKS GOOD.

Posted by: figgy at April 17, 2009 1:25 PM

I mean, really, wouldn't Apparating be way more effective if they didn't leave trails of themselves everywhere they went? I don't get it, and I hated it in Order of the Phoenix.

I also love the fact that with a new HP coming out we might get Twilight pushed into the background, at least for a while.

Posted by: figgy at April 17, 2009 1:34 PM

I'm looking forward to May a lot.

There will, of course, be a brief layover in May, Jay. (hee, May Jay!) Should two and a half hours cover everything including popcorn runs and bathroom breaks?

Posted by: lizzieborden at April 17, 2009 1:37 PM

figgy, I actually really liked the way they did Apparition (apparation?). I agree with you about the trails, but I like the visual of it. Or at least, I did once I figured out that's what it was.

Posted by: lizzieborden at April 17, 2009 1:39 PM

Yeah, it really was kind of confusing and messy in OotP, and it didn't help that they had done it differently in the other movies, as far as I recall. That battle was just so messy and confusing, when in the book it was SO good. I hope they at least refine the effect for this one.

Posted by: figgy at April 17, 2009 1:47 PM

Well I've got plans at the end of the month after "Star Trek" too. Middle of the month's kinda doldrums though.

Snape is really a woman!

*geekness on*

Snape did NOT really kill Dumbledore, just put him out of his misery so to speak.

*geekness off*

Posted by: Perl at April 17, 2009 1:53 PM

Jay I AM DYING.

A WICKED WOMAN WHO PADDLES FOR FUN!

Haaa!

Posted by: figgy at April 17, 2009 1:54 PM

What's at the end of May? I might be able to finagle a second layover, but I can't promise anything.

Posted by: lizzieborden at April 17, 2009 2:02 PM

Oh I've just got a friend visiting that last weekend until the 2nd.

Posted by: Jay at April 17, 2009 2:06 PM

Well, we can probably work something out, because I've got BaconEast to stop for as well.

Posted by: lizzieborden at April 17, 2009 2:11 PM

This trailer made me squee all over myself...

I'm so excited I may bifurcate all over myself.
superEdna, you're going to... be split in two?

Kolby, the last one or two were PG-13, but this one is actually only PG... weird, I know.

Figgy, I completely agree about the Apparition poots! That bugged me in Order of the Phoenix.

And to everyone who said that Rupert Grint is gettign hott with two t's, HELLS YES he is legal! I have said it before, and I will say it several more times: fuck me in the MOUTH, he is good-looking!

Posted by: Patty O'Green at April 17, 2009 2:15 PM

I've run out of geek; I have no geek left in me to geek out. I think the the last of my chills were used up when the poster of Ron looking bad-flippin-ASS in a keeper's uniform came out.

/Yes, I am more familiar with Quidditch positions than basketball positions, so what, wanna fight about it?

Posted by: Sweetie Dahling at April 17, 2009 2:33 PM

Quidditch is waaay more entertaining than any real sport, in my book.

And those are some seriously badass uniforms they've designed for these movies.

Posted by: figgy at April 17, 2009 3:24 PM

I think I just jizzed my pants at this trailer. I love Harry Potter sooo much

Posted by: Person at April 17, 2009 3:36 PM

Mmmfff . . . I think I just . . . yes, it's drool.

Posted by: Lauren at April 17, 2009 3:57 PM

WOOOO! Damn, that trailer is exciting!

Posted by: Melissa at April 17, 2009 4:15 PM

and i jizzed in my pants.

Bust seriously, even without sound, that gave me serious goosebumps. Holy frickin shit, this better be as good as it looks.

Posted by: tncunnin at April 17, 2009 6:43 PM

Love it.

I'm just hoping that anyone who has issue about the actors' ages never enjoyed Dawson's Creek, cuz that was some Benjamin Button's shit, too...err, I mean BENJAMIN BUTTON'S SHIT TOO!!!!11!1!

Posted by: branded at April 17, 2009 8:32 PM

I have an issue with the fact that there is clearly no 'glass' in Harry's glasses most of the time...I'm weird like that. I mean I get that it makes it about 100 times harder to get lighting right, but it's frankly just lazy.

Oh, and thanks for NOT posting another FUCKING hulu trailer. Damn bastards and their "ooh, you're not not from the US, you're not good enought to watch our clips" smug attitude.

Not that I feel strongly about that, or anything...

Posted by: rach at April 17, 2009 11:55 PM

To quote Andy Samberg:

And then I JIZZED in my pants.

This looks AWESOME.

Posted by: Jessica at April 19, 2009 1:12 PM

Is it wrong to find Draco Malfoy ungodly attractive in this?

It feels wrong.

Posted by: Lauralyn at April 19, 2009 10:57 PM

I've always felt this one is the best suited for a film - it has several discernible 'acts' amongst a lot of narrative, probably the best because the action should fit quite neatly into film form

As for the last one, there's so much in it it could easily be of epic length

Posted by: Tarquin at April 19, 2009 11:41 PM

More evidence that I am the biggest Harry Potter nerd that ever lived --
The first shot of Dumby and Harry standing on the cliff outside the cave MADE ME TEAR UP.
This is my favorite one, and I am not gonna make it through this movie in one piece.

Posted by: Courtie at April 20, 2009 12:37 PM

@ Jay Holy shit! Those HP scene deconstructs need to be on the eventual Brad Neely dvd box set.

Posted by: Jackseppelin at April 20, 2009 9:33 PM

I think my love for Daniel Radcliffe is borderline unhealthy. I cannot WAIT for this movie.
