Gatchaman… LIVES!

For those who are extra special nerdy, Gatchaman is something precious, to be treasured. We showed you footage a few months back of a trailer for a supposed full-length CG film in production from Imagi Studios. It was a sort of funeral sermon — the studio was closing its doors, and it appeared that we’d never see the feature film about high-tech bird-themed ninjas (ah, Japan) who battle the dark forces of the evil Galactor and try to save the earth. It started out as an anime cartoon called Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, and was sloppily imported to the US with the name G-Force.

Well, it looks like we might be in luck. According to Twitch, the studio is back up and running, has done some management re-structuring, and production on the film has resumed. This is good news, folks — the production looks pretty cool. Here’s some newer footage that we didn’t show last time:

Here’s the earlier trailer we showed you back in April:

Sweet. Between this and the trailer for Space Battleship Yamato, I’m very pleased.

Ah. No wonder I didn't recognize the name, but knew for sure it was one of the shows I used to watch after school in the '80s.
I like the look of this much better than that of the G-Force TV show...

It looks like they did some redesigning of the costumes. They look closer to the originals, while still keeping the updated, more armored like look. I like it.

I am going to enjoy this.

Goddamn! The Japanese just have this style that they throw into everything that, visually, makes any kind of animation, CG or otherwise, look SO much cooler than everyone else's.

I love the original Gatchaman and I think the campness is part of its appeal--the flares-wearing henchmen, deadly projectile feathers, the over-dramatic music etc. This new version is 'meh'-ish.

Interesting, I've never heard of it but it looks like it could be fun. I'm getting a real The Incredibles vibe from it though.

This SO beats the crap out of animated Gerbils.

Me likey.

I'm liking this, a lot.

Wheee! I'm gonna watch the hell out of this.

I like the newer one better. They look more like their "Battle of the Planets" costumes. The only exception looks to be Tiny who looks like he's been hitting the gym. Mark looks more Batman (with batarang) to Jason's gunslinger, Princess looks impractical but still as I remembered and Keyop sounds like he's voiced by a real kid.

Who says you need a giant freaking Robo to take out a big hulking monster?

FUCK. YES.

Is it wrong that what I really want is one of those giant Mek-Crab things (with fricking lasers in it's fricking, well, everywhere?)

Posted by: BierceAmbrose at July 19, 2010 4:08 PM

This looks OSSOM. I'm totally geeking out right now.

Holy crap this is fantastic news. I had such high hopes for Imagi after TMNT and Astro Boy, they seemed to be the only CG studio breaking away from the typical family movie stuff that Pixar, Dreamworks, Blue sky etc are putting out.

They had me genuinely excited to be an animator again, and then they bombed out.

Seriously I have such a massive fucking grin on my face right now.

Did I get goosebumps? Yes I did. This better not disappoint!
