Bad Ass Travolta and the New Director of Dune

Here’s a new trailer for Pierre Morel’s From Paris with Love, due out in the first week of February. It strikes a very similar tone to Morel’s last flick, Taken, though — as much as I hate to write this — bad-ass Travolta slightly trumps bad-ass Liam Neeson for me. Put Travolta in a goatee, and the devil on my shoulder feels funny in his tingly bits. Put him in a family comedy, and that goddamn devil on my shoulder pukes down my shirt.

Otherwise, it looks like a mostly generic action-flick, but I’m really showing it here for one reason only. Watch 65 seconds of From Paris with Love, and ask yourself: Is this the guy we really want directing the Dune remake? Is flashy competence really the best we can do?

So you're driving down the highway. You're approaching an overpass. You notice that someone is standing on top of the overpass looking down at you. He's got something on his shoulder.

Man: Honey, do you see that man?
Woman: Hmmm? *looks up from magazine*
Man: There is a man on top of the overpass holding something. What is that?
Woman: Oh, yeah. It looks like a...
Man: ...a bazooka, right.
Woman: Right.
Man: Do you think we should pull over and flee from the vehicle or pass underneath with the faith that he's not going to blow something up?
Woman: Whatever you want, sweetie. *returns to magazine*
Man: Hmph...it'll be fine. *pause* We'll be fine.

*explosion*

I'm sure it'll make sense when I'm watching the movie.

I still prefer bad-ass Neeson. Travolta is good, but he's just like every other shouty "I'm going to beat your ass" action guy. I think Neeson has a deliciously quiet, brooding menace (most of the time) to his character that really made me love it.

I'm sorry, but I CANNOT see Travolta or Rhys Myers as credible action stars. Basically every moment of that looked silly to me.

I didn't want to like it, I didn't. I wanted to believe the purpose for this post was nothing more than to allow Dustin to share this little bit of goodness:

Put Travolta in a goatee, and the devil on my shoulder feels funny in his tingly bits. Put him in a family comedy, and that goddamn devil on my shoulder pukes down my shirt.

But I gotta agree with Dustin's devil. I'm all a-tingle.

I barely noticed anything other than Travolta - and may I just say that bald bad ass Travolta beats the hell out of spray on Ken hair Travolta.

I love me some Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Yum.

I'm with you on this D. Neeson looks like he'd like to explain his pain to you in great detail and blahblahblah...Travolta (with a very tight editor and clippy script) just has the swagger neccessary.

That madcap little zing in the eye that puts you a little straighter in your chair...Ewan MacGregor fairly oozes it, Malcolm MacDowell, Walken, even Will Farrel and Will Smith, Matt Dillon...I could go on but you get my point. Not always the most talented guys, but the most charismatic make the best villains. Evil is boring - being knowingly rotten is fun.

bald bad ass Travolta

I read that as bald ass Travolta.

Good Lord I hope his ass is bald. Hairy ass Travolta is just disgusting.

Oh, new job market: Bald Ass Toupee Maker!

(Watch, now some ass is going to come in here all, 'My father's mother's, sister's cousin was a Bald Ass Toupee Maker!' And I will have to give the only proper response, 'This ain't Roots, bitch!')

Are those possessives right? God, probably not.

I think that looks like ass. And not even good ass. It's old, saggy, droopy Jack Nickolson ass. Since Match Point I can't stand to watch anything Jonathan Rhys Myers is in. It just pisses me off.

MissNev: surely that exludes Bend It Like Beckham...he's gorgeous in that!

Is Travolta wearing a prosthetic bald head here? Tha fuck, he looks like an idiot. He's also too old for this.

Eh... Travolta doing generic action movie one liners looks pretty terrible from my house.
I didn't really like Taken so much. It might have sucked more with dubbed Spanish on a bus in Peru than it did in a theater somewhere with English audio. Where the fuck am I going with this...?
Oh yeah- Taken, not that cool, but still a bit less ridiculous than this movie clearly is.

"There's a suicide bomber inside the embassy."
"Wax's methods aren't exactly regulation."
"That's how I do things."
"God I love this country."
Tell me this aren't some shitty action movie clichéd pieces of dialog.

superasente: that made me shout, "HA!!" involuntarily.

And, also, I'm with admin on this one. I like quiet menace more than shouty mania. Either way, this looks like it's more about the explosions than the story. Unless I hear otherwise, it'll be a pass for me.
