In Space No One Can Write You Subtitles

TK and I are both so excited for the live action remake of Space Battleship Yamato that we have on occasion dual posted in skitzophrenic harmony.

Now the first two minutes of the film have made their way on line. I don’t have the slightest idea what is happening, other than the obvious fact that there are spaceships, and that they are shooting. Most films are built upon less sturdy foundations than that, so I heartily approve. I also love the glowering commander sitting up in a cross between the Enterprise’s command chair and a medieval throne. Everyone else frantically chatters in the heat of battle, but the commander just sits there glaring at the universe, like he is thinking “Kirk? I ate him for breakfast. Adama? He’s alright, but did you know that the secret power of the wave motion cannon is my anger?”

The film was released in Japan last Wednesday, but for some reason there still is no American release date for this Japanese film that is a thinly veiled metaphor of a nationalist resurgence following an alien radioactive assault and invasion. At this point I’m not sure if this is payback against Americans for the nukes or for not only letting Michael Bay make Pearl Harbor, but for releasing it in Japan by advertising it as a love story.

But does it have a Yamato Gun?

(a shiny penny to the first to get that reference)

I don't know what the hell was going on in that trailer, but I'm there.

Whee Nerds! Jim Raynor and I approve.

The first time I played the video, the sound was muted so I just supplied all the dialogue and sound effects myself:

Whoooosh!
Pew-Pew-Pew!

Fancy Pilot: Sir! Our lasers are useless against that armour!
Captain Tanaka: Stand Down! We will hit them broadside with our Really Big Guns!!!

Wwwwhhhhhiiirrrrrr
KA-BOOOOM!!!

Tink! Tink! Tink!

Gunner: Sir! Our rounds hit their ships, BUT! THEY! HAD! NO! EFFECT!

Closeup of Captain Tanaka
Captain Tanaka: Gulp! We are SO hosed.....

Then I found the volume controls and guess what? My sounds effects were much better.

Star Blazers was my favorite weekday afternoon cartoon when I was a kid.

Fantastic look to it, and it appears faithful to the original cartoon. There's the panicky bridge crew and the emotionless-though-quite-demonstrably-pissed commander, and you can hear the guy yelp, "Commander! Our weapons are powerless against their Advanced Alien Technology(tm)!"

After seeing that clip, I fear I will have to shampoo my carpet. Again.

Ooooooh, that girl is pretty.

Actually, that guy's name in the cartoon was Captain Avatar and he looked like that. For real. Go check it out.

He was a total badass. During all combat actions he would let his officers handle everything, even letting them feud with each other until something needed his utmost attention. Then when he talked, people shut up and listened.

I was an officer in the military for a decade and I always thought Captain Avatar's style of leadership deserved its own dissertation. Too many real officers micromanage their troops and that's usually not the most effective way to get things done.

Anyway, I hope this film comes out with English subtitles at some point.

@malikvlc: I'm at work and had to mute-watch as well, and may I say my sound effects rival yours...
Wumm!
Ping! Ping! Ping!
Pilot: Herr Kommandant, unsere Laser durchdringen ihre Panzer nicht!
Kommandant Tanaka: Zurücktreten! Wir erwischen sie seitlings mit unserem Super Großen Geschützen!
etcetera und so weiter and so forth...

I'm glad I'm not a big fan of Space Battleship Yamato/Star Blazers.

Not to change the subject, but would someone here buy me a plane ticket to Japan?
