First 15 Minutes Of Game Of Thrones: Ours Is The Fury

I didn’t want to watch this. I really didn’t. I wanted to wait until the show’s premiere, and experience it in its entirety. But two things happened: First, Steven, who would normally write this up, watched it and then promptly fainted (in a totally manly way). Second, well… I just couldn’t fucking help myself.

It’s the first fifteen minutes. It’s quiet, somber, and evenly paced. Everyone speaks in low tones. The costume design is perfect, and the production design is pretty damn remarkable, down to the smallest detail — notice that in the archery scene, the fletching of each arrow is different and a little raggedy. The brief action is intense, and the Others are freaky as hell. And when Sean Bean says, “Winter is coming,” I literally got chills.

Watch it, if you can’t help yourself:

Hell yes.

I don't get HBO and it is my birthday - this is my present to myself! :-) ::scrolls back up to watch::

Yes. Yes. This is all good. I can now fully accept Sean Bean as Ned. They've made the odd adjustment to the books (Bran is now ten instead of 7-8, fr'instance, and they've obviously had to age Dany (not shown) instead of showing a 14 yo ravished by a wild Ghengis Khan figure on television) but it looks so very well realised. I am merely hoping that they have the budget and the ability to do justice to at least the first three books over time.

My wife is not a fantasy fan, really. We picked up "A Game of Thrones" at the used book store a few months back. I started it but got distracted with something else and planned to revisit it after the first season aired (same as I've been doing with the Sookie Stackhouse books and True Blood). She took it to work with her last week and finished it in about 4 days. I've never seen someone go from ambivalent to fangirl quite so fast. She just ordered the entire box set from Amazon and anytime anything bad appears to be happening will quietly say "Winter is coming." It's pretty awesome quite honestly. There is nothing quite like being taken hold of by a rich fictional world and I'm really looking forward to the series. I think like most of the fans she is nervous as hell right now while I am just realy excited.

Nope. I'm not watching this. I am not pressing play. This is my treat on April 17th. I don't ask for much, but this will remain unsullied in my mind.

What's this? Hmm. My right hand is suspiciously creeping toward the mouse. What's the matter, old friend? My balls aren't good enough for you anymore? No, no, I'm not telling you what to do. Aww, don't look at me like that! All of the years spent together and you want to betray me over a TV show?! If you value even one moment of our beautiful relationship YOU WILL NOT CLICK PLAY YOU SELFISH COCKSUCKER!!!!!!

. . . .

That's it. I'm getting the machete.

Posted by: Kballs at April 5, 2011 8:54 AM

Nope. I'm waiting.

My husband keeps looking at me funny because I tend to mutter "Winter is coming" whenever I come across the latest news on the show. The thing is Spring is in full swing where I am at and I have been complaining about the cold for the last six months. I cannot wait for winter to come!!

Curse you, TK. I was hoping to see more. Why only 15 minutes? I could have watched the entire first four books. Jerk.

Posted by: Mr. Yuck at April 5, 2011 9:48 AM

I didn't even pretend that I could wait. I ordered HBO on Friday just so I could watch this on Sunday.

It was fantastic.

While I always pictured the Others as being more etheral and elegant rather than terrifying and savage, as portrayed on the show, I am totally fine with that take on them. The little wight girl was terrifying.

The Starks, from Rickon on up, all looked spot on.

Posted by: Forbiddendonut at April 5, 2011 9:50 AM

Another thing. That 15 minutes felt like 15 seconds.

Posted by: Forbiddendonut at April 5, 2011 9:53 AM

I like Sean Bean so much in this role. The inevitable is going to hit so much harder when it comes.

Posted by: Phedre at April 5, 2011 10:03 AM

Hell yes I hit "play". Now the true agony...waiting for this to come out on DVD, because I do not have HBO and cannot afford it.

*watches again* Lord, I do believe I'm getting the vapors.

Posted by: Steven Lloyd Wilson at April 5, 2011 10:17 AM

So was the creature that killed Waymar in the show actually an Other, or just a wight? It looks to me like they've decided not to introduce the Others right away. Can't really say I disagree with them.

To fully capture an Other like the books might require a budget they didn't quite have for this season. Better to do it right than blow the prequel with bad special effects.

Posted by: Snath at April 5, 2011 10:25 AM

Snath, that was most definitely an Other that killed Royce.

The wights are merely undead people with blue eyes. They showed one, the little wilding child who was pinned agains the tree and then was later walking around.

They showed both wights and Others in that scene.

Posted by: Forbiddendonut at April 5, 2011 10:28 AM

I've rewatched it about ten times since Sunday night, and I still am not sure. Time to watch it again.

Posted by: Snath at April 5, 2011 10:30 AM

I couldn't help myself, and have so far watched it three times (I had to share it with assorted friends, of course). It looks incredible, and the casting seems pretty much spot on with every character we see on screen. My expectations for this are so incredibly high. I hope HBO don't let me down.

Posted by: Malin at April 5, 2011 10:44 AM

Loved it, of course. And I'm loving even more how how many non-fantasy people are now suddenly waiting for this show. I got brothers saying "record and save that show!"

BTW, Just a few of my thoughts on A Song of Ice & Fire.

Posted by: Fredo at April 5, 2011 10:48 AM

You actually don't see quite as much of the Other as I had remembered. But it's definitely an Other. The wights don't move quite like that and the Others are described as having voices that sound like ice breaking and you can hear that sound quite a bit when Will is running and right after the Other be-heads the one guy.

Posted by: Forbiddendonut at April 5, 2011 10:51 AM

Forbiddendonut, you're right. They are definitely using blades of ice. Don't know how I missed that before.

Did y'all see the little feud that Damon Lindelof and George R. R. Martin started? Martin was quoted as saying that he worried about "pulling a LOST" with his ending. Lindelof was offended and tweeted about it. Here are all the tweets, as well as the link to Martin's interview. I did think it was a funny coincidence that both these stories have mysterious entities lurking beyond the boundary called "Others."

George RR Martin is terrified of "pulling a LOST" by ending Game of Thrones shittily. In related news, my therapist just hit the jackpot.

Here's the link to George's lament and why I won't be sleeping tonight -- http://on.io9.com/dTJfTt #TWITTERISMYSHRINK

Thank you tweeps. In but five minutes you have made me feel better. But George? You got yourself a feud, motherfucker.

Winter IS coming, bitch. #MARTINFEUDFIRSTSALVO

I don't take issue with his opinion, I take issue with the fact that he coined "Pulling a LOST" as empirically "fucking up the ending"

Not to mention, he agreed to be say nice things if I sent him Mr. Friendly's beard, which I did. #OHSNAPSALVOTWO

I've just been informed George is working on his feud response. I'll have it in FIVE YEARS! #NOYOUDINT

NOOOOO... I can't access the video!

Posted by: tallulahc at April 5, 2011 11:28 AM

Lindelof comes off looking like a little bitch.

Posted by: Fredo at April 5, 2011 11:32 AM

That's because Lindelof IS a little bitch.

Posted by: Kballs at April 5, 2011 11:35 AM

Perfect. I've been itching for some new fantasy to read!

Too much! Not enough!

Damn man, it's always amazing to me how the final product looks perfect, after all the "sweetening", after seeing the clunky looking preview vignettes. They never look as finished as the end product does, as it has here. I was actually worried about Sean Bean. His acting in the vignettes I saw looked like he wasn't that into it, but now I see that's his character, the way he's playing it. So excellent.

I loved the Others, though if I remember correctly, in four large-ass novels, aside from a couple of scenes with Samwell and Jon outside the wall, this thread is still hanging kinda un-visited.

Sean Miller, Jason Locke, Oliver Mellors, Patrick Koster, Boromir, Andy McNab, Neil Byrne, Richard Sharpe.

Sean Bean is IT!

Posted by: kirbyjay at April 5, 2011 12:57 PM

I wonder if they will ever call them "Others" in the television version, as Lost did snatch the brand for the name as far as pop culture goes.

Posted by: DarthCorleone at April 5, 2011 1:14 PM

No video here either talullahc ... although at least it saves me from my terrible impulse control.

Actually, in a way I'm glad I can't see it because, although this probably marks me out as a total techno-Luddite, I'm finding myself missing the days when we had to wait for something on TV and then we all watched it at the same time and could talk about it at school/work the next day (or, with Twin Peaks back in the day, on the phone immediately after the end credits). What with t'internets and bit torrent and Hulu and the i-Player and all, that sense of a show being an event has kind of gone. As a for-instance, True Blood season 3 wasn't on in the UK until February this year and when I looked at the recap for the first episode on the Guardian's TV blog, almost every comment was from (British) people who'd seen the whole series (through downloads or similar) already. [And most of them said it was crap.]

So actually, I'm okay with waiting for this to be on TV. It's a day later than for you guys, but hey, it's better than a poke in the eye...

Posted by: lingli at April 5, 2011 1:59 PM

I almost peed my pants when I watched this. My "I'm not going to watch it, I'm going to wait" period lasted all of 5 seconds before I hit play. I posted a link with a "winter is coming" comment on my Facebook. I'm going to spend my lunch break today going home, which will leave me approximately 15 minutes and thirty seconds before I have to leave again, so I can watch this. This is honestly going to be one of the longest two weeks of my life, THAT'S how excited I am about this show.

Also watched this clip before bed last night, and had Other nightmares. Dammit.

Aww, I like Rickon. You can tell he's gonna grow up into a rabid little terror.
