I, Robot Meets the Subcontinent

So there was the Red Eagle trailer yesterday and today we’ve got India’s answer to I, Robot, The Matrix and Austin Powers in the form of Endhiran which translates as “The Robot.” If a new trailer for Space Battleship Yamato hits tomorrow we’ll hit some sort of Asian sci-fi trifecta for the week.

This might be the most insane trailer I have ever seen for a movie. There are choreographed dance scenes with golden robots, a giant robot cobra eating cars, an android running sideways down the side of the outside of a train, a robot drawing and firing approximately fifty machine guns all at the same time. And sun glasses. More sun glasses and leather than have been seen since The Matrix.

The first clip is a new one minute trailer, while the one below it is a stitch-up of a different one minute trailer and a few 15 second spots.

My brain just melted right out of my nostrils. If there was some sort of index for the art of being so terrible that you wrap right back round to awesome, then this film would be the gold standard.

Oh, did I mention there are some production stills? There are some production stills.

Oh sweet Godtopus, this looks cracktastic. I can't wait to see it. I hope Netflix gets it! *crosses fingers*

There's a theater near me that shows the occassional Bollywood flick, and they're showing this one. I may need to make a trip over there one night when the wife is busy (although I may be able to convince here it's a rom-com and sucker her in if she doesn't see the trailer.)

This is not Bollywood. This is TOLLYWOOD. The Tamil film industry kind of explodes every time Rajnikanth makes a film. Honestly, as someone from India, this is the first time I've seen someone talk about the movie without waxing poetic about Rajnikanth, for which, I am oddly miffed. (I kid, I kid.)

Is that Aishwarya Rai?

Posted by: jeem at October 7, 2010 11:04 AM

I'm sold.

It's got A.R. Rahman's music in it. I'm a huge fan of his. I really want to see this now. It needs to either A) hit the US or B) go to Netflix.

That's just insane.

Sign me up.

Shobhna, I didn't know there were other desis 'round these parts. Call me up some time...it will go to the main Helpdesk, but I can give you a ticket number that will route you to me.

So, the bad guys speak English? That's kinda like how Americans always make the bad guys speak with an British accent.

I saw this in theatres in Ottawa yesterday and it was great fun. In Canada, it is titled Enthiran, or The Robot in english. If you live in ottawa, it is still playing today and worth trekking out to. warning--the subtitles were atrocious

a couple of points for context:

virtually all indian movies are musicals and will every 20 minutes or so break into elaborate song and dance set pieces.

a lot of the movie is supposed to be funny and silly, while at the same time it isn't simply a comedy. like many other countries, Indian films don't always easily slot into genres the way so many of ours do.

it was very obviously and purposely making nods towards the matrix, terminator, I, Robot and other action sci-fi franchises.

the "villain" doesn't speak english. As far as I know, there are two or three languages spoken in the film, and all the characters pepper their speech with english--sometimes idioms, and sometimes technical terms. again, I believe this may be fairly normal.

oh, playing all next week too in Ottawa, at The colliseum on Carling Ave.

the world needs more love songs with the chorus "you are my hot wasabi in honey". said song also had refrains referncing atoms and electrons. classic.

Did that programmer dude say he has only one gigabyte of memory? I'm sorry, but that's some shitty robot making.

@jeem
It is indeed Aishwarya Rai, who is herself a good enough reason to see it. Add in robot chorus line and it's a lock.

This looks like a hundred kinds of awesome. Please to be releasing on the Blu-ray.
