Don't Trust the Darkness, Don't Trust the Light

Vanish_ComingSoon.jpg

You wake up and everyone is gone. Then everything goes dark. Everything.
That’s the beginning of Brad Anderson’s (Transsiberian, The Machinist) new film Vanishing on 7th Street. Survivors band together in a local bar, the only place that seems to have light. And then, over time, the lights flicker and start to go out.

Survivors of an unknown phenomenon trying to survive against the darkness? It sounds like it should really work. And the supporting cast looks solid. John Leguizamo, Thandie Newton, like I said- solid.
But the success of something like this hinges on the ability of the actor in the lead role. And I think you’re already assuming the worst since I’m building it up like this.
Ready?
It’s Hayden Christensen. Best known for his spectacularly wooden performances in the Star Wars trilogy. And I can hear you saying “What about Shattered Glass? He was good in Shattered Glass.”
I will respond by posting the trailer. You can judge his performance. He has some really spectacular delivery of this dialogue.

But it’s not a terrible trailer, hey? Kind of an interesting premise. Doctor Who taught us that every culture has a fear of the dark. And I like that “Trust only the light that you hold in your own hand” line. It has some implications…

Vanishing on 7th Street will be premiering soon at the Toronto Film Festival.

Yeah, solid like pudding, HARD pudding.

"you sure there's one coming" line was a fail; let's hope this can make it since i'm a sucker for this type of movie

Posted by: splinter at August 18, 2010 7:09 PM

Any of the other gamers getting a giant Alan Wake feel? Everyone starts vanishing, darkness is the enemy, light is your only way to defend yourself, convoluted plot that ends up disappointing you.

oh and lets not forget the unlikable lead character...

I think I know better than to let my hopes get too high a second time

Posted by: Mr. Patches at August 18, 2010 7:17 PM

Hayden Darthvadersen has GOT to be the WORST actor of his generation. They should just replace him with James Franco, on everything.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at August 18, 2010 7:22 PM

That's a shit trailer - but the movie might be better than it would seem. I only recently saw Transsiberian and it surprised me. That said, Hayden is awful.

Posted by: Cindy at August 18, 2010 7:38 PM

How awesome could this have been with James McAvoy in the lead?

Posted by: The Kilted Yaksman at August 18, 2010 7:55 PM

But... but... the concept is so good! Please, please don't go horribly wrong. I'll be seeing it either way, so I plead with you, please, please don't be awful.

Hayden Christensen is ridiculous. John Leguizamo is awesome, but it's still too soon after The Happening. (Too soon!) Thandie Newton, well, meh.

You don't have to set the bar as high as James McAvoy. This would be a better movie with any of the following leads:

Timothy Olyphant
Alyson Hannigan
Dwayne Johnson
Steven Segal
Robin Givens
The log currently in my fireplace
Either of the Coreys
Pudding-except for tapioca
Summer Glau
Will I Am
Alf
Ryan Kwanten
Mark Hamill
Samuel Jackson

I can keep going...the point is Hayden wasn't taken because the Big Bad went "eh."

Posted by: Mrcreosote at August 18, 2010 8:07 PM

You got something against motherfucking tapioca?

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at August 18, 2010 8:13 PM

Mrcreosote. Alf starring in this film would be fucking spectacular.
I only read the first page of that weirdass story in the Pajiba Love today. So I'm not scarred. I just think it's a great idea.

Posted by: A-schaef at August 18, 2010 8:21 PM

Also, from the trailer you can clearly tell Leguizamo doesn't make it past the 20min mark. So what you got here is a Thandie Newton/Anakin Whinewalker flick for at least an hour and forty minutes. Try to make it through THAT without killing yourself, this is how it becomes an interactive experience, none of that 3D bullshit.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at August 18, 2010 8:22 PM

slap a motherfucking snap-brim on hayden and a silly rapper-filled heist plot pic and you can all go to the motherfucking theater right now (and i hope they burn in hell)

Posted by: furtherbeyond at August 18, 2010 8:23 PM

Looks great to me. I'll be watching for this one.

Posted by: Jerce at August 18, 2010 8:42 PM

oh, jerce. don't you have any standards?

Posted by: splinter at August 18, 2010 8:59 PM

Hayden was awful in Star Wars, but Lucas would have trouble coaxing a good performance out of Sir Laurence Olivier. This was a cool little trailer, even if the title sounds like a lost Bob Dylan song.

Posted by: stryker1121 at August 18, 2010 9:42 PM

i'll have to give it a chance because of the director. its a shame they didn't use any actors, it would make the movie easier to sell

Posted by: idleprimate at August 18, 2010 9:44 PM

I'll give this movie a chance mainly for the interesting plot, the intriguing visuals in the trailer and the director.
But Hayden Christiansen is so horrendous, that he might just kill this movie. HOW does he continue to get work? Is he somehow a huge cash-cow and I just don't know it? Is he that much of a bankable actor?

Posted by: Sassafrass Green at August 18, 2010 9:57 PM

It's a great idea, but you really can't tell anything from trailers these days. I'll hold out my expectations til I get a review.

BUT. Fucking hell, Adam. That image of the plane falling out of the sky? That shit is RIGHT OUT of dreams I've been having lately. Fucking terrifying to see it just like that.

Actually, in my dreams they fall sort of horizontally, just FLOP and explode, but STILL. Terrifying.

POSSIBLE SPOILER (I just made up):

Big Oil is behind it.

Brad Anderson gets a look no matter what. He's earned it. Not thrilled about Christensen but there has to be SOME reason he was chosen for the role when he hasn't worked since Jumper.

Posted by: TylerDFC at August 19, 2010 7:05 AM

The shadowy things remind me of that episode of Fringe with the cosmonaut who had the shadowy parasite inside him that would only be kept at bay if it was shocked or something, and turned people into ash.

Not seeing this. Already going to have trouble sleeping from the trailer. Why yes, I am a little bitch.

So the demon things from Ghost are trying to come and drag darth vader to hell? Pass.

Posted by: aroorda at August 19, 2010 9:20 AM

It kind of reminds me of Pitch Black too, with the survivors gathering up their light sources and hitting it on foot.

I'm going to see this, and then for a week afterwards, whenever I have to go downstairs at night for a glass of water or something, I will PANIC AND RUN UP THE STAIRS BEFORE THE SHADOW PEOPLE COME TO GET ME.

I'm never afraid of horror movies DURING the movie. It's only later when I find myself in a similar-looking situation that I turn into an 8-year-old and run screaming back to my room. -_-

what does that spam-bot EVEN MEAN?!

Posted by: gp at August 19, 2010 4:22 PM

This looks like it could be a steaming pile of shit.

But I'm willing to give it a shot after watching Transsiberian & The Machinist.

Gonna jump in on the "premise is great" bandwagon.

I don't suppose Session 9 can get some love around here as well?
