Remember in high school when some variation on a personal growth class made you take the Myers-Briggs personality test? And then you spent the rest of Wednesday in thrilling conversations about how being an INTJ made you like totally a thoughtful writer while the the ENTPs were going to be entrepreneurs? It was sort of like school approved horoscopes where you instantly mapped any meaning that you liked on to the paragraph of gibberish that told you how the rest of your life would play out. I got INTJ, because I hate people, think too much, and judge all the people I hate for not thinking enough. The ‘N’ was for the long walks on the beach, if I remember correctly.

And then remember how on Thursday, everyone’s class schedule was resorted so you only had classes with your classification and the weird kid who the test couldn’t put in a convenient bin was crucified on the quad for being different? How his blood on the grass was a convenient reminder that the flower that raises its face to the sun will be cut down by our lawnmower of conformity?

As far as I can tell, Divergent is that scenario played out on a societal dystopian level. Here’s the final trailer for the film:

Ugh. To paraphrase the eminent philosopher and sage Tyler Durden: you are not a special snowflake. But I’m different! She exclaims. Yes, we all are, that’s what makes us all the same.

Now, the movie is based on a novel, which seems to be well-regarded, and ten years ago that simple fact would give the movie a lot of good faith assumptions. But then Twilight happened and I lost the capacity to trust in the inherent good of books.
