David Gordon Green’s Our Brand Is Crisis, based on a documentary of the same name, is about the use of American political campaign strategies in South America. It stars Sandra Bullock, but the interesting note here is that Peter Straughan’s screenplay was originally written for a man (in fact, it was originally written for George Clooney).

Coming off her Oscar-nominated role in Gravity, however, Bullock found some difficulty in finding juicy roles for a woman. She reached out to her Gravity co-star George Clooney, who now produces Our Brand Is Crisis, and convinced him to gender-switch the lead, which was much easier than you might think: “We changed the hims to hers, wardrobe and the anatomy was changed. Not a lot was done, just the obvious things. It was pretty nice and seamless,” Bullock said.

Clooney may still have made an appearance in the film, depending on whether you believe Bullock when she joked that, in a mooning scene, Clooney acted as her “butt double.”

“George is a lot less hairy down there,” Bullock says. “Baby bottom. Versus what I’ve got down there, which is a Chia Pet.”

Meanwhile, let’s hope that more roles are either written for women, or written interchangeably. Based on the decidedly mixed reviews of Our Brand Is Crisis coming out of the Toronto Film Festival, however, let’s hope that Bullock can land a better male role the next time.

Here’s the trailer for Our Brand Is Crisis, which also stars Billy Bob Thornton. As you might imagine from his hair, his character is based on James Carville, who tried to apply American politics to a Bolivian election in 2002.
