A Napoleon Dynamite Superhero Comedy?

In Defendor, Woody Harrelson plays a bumbling psychotic with a superhero complex who has fashioned his costume out of sweats and duct tape. He’s all about catching the bad guy: Captain Industry. And, because there’s no Captain Industry listed in the credits over on iMBD, I suspect that he’s a delusion created by Defendor’s dull wits. Kat Dennings plays his teenage friend, while Sandra Oh plays his shrink.

The pic premieres at the upcoming Tortonto Film Fest, and it comes from Peter Stebbings, a veteran Canadian actor turned writer/director. And I do want to like the trailer — there aren’t a lot of decent indie superhero films. But I can’t help but to think it’s essentially a superhero, middle-aged Napoloean Dynamite. I appreciate Woody Harrelson’s semi-career resurgence (see also, Zombieland), and I do like Kat Dennings. Mostly the voice — has anybody already tagged her the next Liv Tyler? Stay away from Kevin Smith romantic comedies, Kat. That’s all I’m saying. Career. Killer.

Had me at Kat Dennings. Woody doesn't hurt, either.

delusional woody has ALWAYS been the best woody.

They're both unusual. While Kat Dennings looks like she was thrown together with spare parts by orcs, Liv Tyler looks like she was thrown together with spare parts by elves.

I'm siding with TK on the Kat Dennings love. Count me in for a late night viewing, assuming we can smuggle in a couple flasks of JD.

Didn't they make this with Michael Rapaport? And people really liked it? I don't really remember the title but the whole delusional superhero thing has been done before.

Mmmmmmmm JD *fist bumps Jeremy, but not other parts, thanks!*

"Tortonto Film Fest"

What you mean "Tortonto," white man?

There may have been a similar movie with Michael Rapaport, but nobody liked it. Nobody likes Michael Rapaport.

Good Morning, Mister Rowles:

All I need to know is this - at any point during the film, does Kat Dennings remove her top and just kind of... like, sway in place?

I appreciate your willingness in answering this question, as it directly relates to whether or not I will bring my fanny pack to the theater with me. Not the fanny pack I bought at Nasa with the secret snack pocket, but the one with the modified velcro flap in the back.

Again, thank you for your help,
Skittimus Maximus Esquire, III

P.S. Is there a charity somewhere that's working toward the lowering of Sandra Oh's eyebrows in hopes of having her not look surprised all the time? If so, please post the address or website so I may make a sizeable contribution. Thanks again.

I swear, H4H. People liked it. It was supposedly pretty good.

Posted by: Optimus Rhyme at September 3, 2009 11:15 AM

That's not true, henchman. I like...wait...no, I guess you're right. No one does like Michael Rappaport. But here's what you were referring to:

"Special" (IMDB)

And Skitz? Swaying and Lowering? Ditto on both counts.

Kat Dennings is a better actress than Liv Tyler. But that's not hard.

I Happened to work on the film and got to see a screening of it a while back. It is actually not like Napolean Dynamite at all! It is actually a drama that has some funny moments in it. It was a really touching film and has some amazing performances.

Was Ket Denning smoking crack in that trailer?!? What is up with the glass pipe? Why do all homeless teens have to be crackheads? Why can't they be wholesome, good-natured, lazy people who don't want to live with dad and mom? Is every sentence in this post a question? Why do I have a problem making declaratives? Crap?

Haha, oops. Perhaps I should have read the other comments first.

It reminds me of a korean movie called "Save The Green Planet". Not quite the same story, but bits of the trailer reminded me of the delusional caracter kidnapping a guy he suspects being an alien. Here it's a villain, but I don't know, kinda look similar. What I'm trying to say here, is, watch the korean flick, it's a great movie.

Also there's a Korean film called A Man Who Once Was Superman.
Similar vibe to this.
