Christmas Came Early This Year, Too Bad The Stocking Is Full Of Coal: A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas Trailer

Shocking as it may seem, “stoner” comedies don’t normally do anything for me, with The Big Lebowski being an exception because it’s a movie about a stoner, but I fucking love Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle. Mainly, I love the dynamic between Harold and Kumar (former Obama administration member Kal Penn and John Cho, J.J. Abrams’ Sulu, who may or may not be gay). They come off like real friends, at least the ones I have, and the world always felt like reality (albeit a bit heightened). It also reintroduced the world to Neil Patrick Harris, which may eventually lead to world peace. Basically, for what it’s trying to do, White Castle is just about a perfect movie — kind of like the real thing in regards to oniony miniburgers. I’m not sure what Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay was trying to do, but I don’t think it succeeded. The move isn’t bad on Comedy Central on a lazy Sunday afternoon, but it’s not great, either. Even the NPH stuff feels forced and anticlimactic.

In spite of that disappointing sequel, I was greatly anticipating A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas. Because, while I hate 3D, I also love Christmas movies and Harold & Kumar themselves are batting .500, so it seemed like looking forward to that might be worthwhile. Though, retrospectively, maybe that was a bit naive. The trailer just plopped and I’m even more confused by it than I was by the entirety of Guantanamo Bay:

There definitely seem to be some humorous moments (I may have some issues, but Harold shooting Santa in the face tickles my funny bone) and the conception of Jesus and Heaven appeal to my skewering of sacred cows, but the reliance on 3D gags — standard, uninspired gags — and fairly terrible CGI on display here distress me greatly. Unfortunately, the claymation thing has been done, too, and probably even to better use on both “Community” and “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia.” Yet, I remain ever hopeful that at least NPH’s song and dance number will be good enough for a Christmas week viewing on TNT. I need this. The world needs this.

Miracles do exist, right? I guess we’ll find out when the movie opens on November 4, 2011.

Rob Payne also writes the indie comic The Unstoppable Force, co-hosts the internet radio show We’re Not Fanboys, and will entertain quality “stoner” movie suggestions on the Twitter @RobOfWar. He also had reservations about the first Harold & Kumar joint, so it’s possible the third will pleasantly surprise him, too. Right…?

Damn. Everything you say in the first paragraph mirrors what I thought, and though I can't watch the trailer here at work your description doesn't fill me with hope. :(

Yeah...watching that trailer confirms one thing. I will avoid this movie, and then will actively seek out the NPH musical number on youtube after it is released.

I kind of really want to see this...but I'm assuming it's not going to be that funny.

I too really loved the shit out of the first one. The second was lame as hell. I was like an oil painting watching that movie.

This one looks decent. I don't think it can be any worse then Guantanamo Bay. Could it?

Meh. Trailer's been taken down.

So you're telling me that US government jobs and Star Trek royalties aren't paying their mortgages?

Somebody should kill 3D with fire.

I will probably end up watching this when it comes on Comedy Central since my expectations are pretty low.

Liked the first movie mainly for the riding the tiger scene. NPH is brilliant in these. The second movie started out as a smart satire and then quickly went down hill. Im a sucker for 3d so I will probably go see this one.

Based on the trailer, they are going to perfectly portray how ridiculous 3D is for 90% of movies.

Damn it. I hated Guantanamo. After the first movie, it was such a tired disappointment. Now this. On one hand, it looks like they're tossing reality right out the damn window. Shooting Santa....in the face. A stoned baby running around on the ceiling. That can be great for comedy. On the other hand, tons of jokes about how lame 3D is in a 3D movie. Is that ironic or meta? Wait. I know. It's cheap and fucking retarded.

On one hand, NPH! He's awesome! He pwns Jesus and has a song and dance number! On the other hand, he wasn't enough to save Guantanamo and he did The Smurfs.

And the "I thought you were gay" joke. Really? Yes it is kind of funny to have an outed homosexual playing such a hedonistic heterosexual. That said, highlighting and explaining why something is funny actually makes it less funny. Kind of like jokes about how lame 3D is in a 3D movie. If you feel the need to explain to someone why the jokes are funny, and to beat them over the head with why the joke is funny, it probably wasn't that funny to begin with.

I don“t know, seems pretty damn funny to me.
