Woah! Ricky Gervais Has Emotional Depth?

Cemetery Junction Trailer / Dustin Rowles

Trailers | February 1, 2010 | Comments (21)

Perhaps you’ve heard of Cemetery Junction, or were at least aware that Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant (“The Office,” “Extras”) were co-writing and co-directing a film. Well, I daresay nothing that you know about either Gervais or Merchant, or any of their previous work, will prepare you for the Cemetery Junction trailer.

It’s a 1970s-set British romantic drama.

Did you catch that? A British romantic drama.

Don’t believe me? Check out the trailer, which looks great, though I’ll admit that almost anything looks great with “All the Young Dudes” playing over it. Seriously: If they’d played “All the Young Dudes” over the Paul Blart trailer I might have inadvertently gotten excited. It’s a weakness.

This song always reminds me of that scene in Clueless where Cher is talking about her distaste for high school boys. That guy in the trailer is pretty cute though

It has heart because Stephen Merchant is involved rather than it being just a solo Gervais project.

Anyway, it's not that much of a surprise when you remember the bit at the end of the UK office Christmas special - Dawn and Tim getting together. That was VERY romantic!

Yeah, for anybody who's watched the UK Office, it's not all that surprising--granted, Gervais does seem a bit hyperactive on his own and likely needs Merchant to settle him down, but I think the two together have done and will do some really good things.

Looks very blah.

There was the one scene in The Invention of Lying when he was crying at his mother's bedside, and I couldn't help but think, "Holy shit, Ricky Gervais, where did that come from?" It was really good. The rest of the movie was complete shit, but that was a very good scene.

Also, misleading still shot and build-up, as Gervais is in the trailer for maybe 5 seconds and has maybe one or two lines.

What? No translation?

To be honest, emotional depth is one of the things I think Ricky does best. He's so famous in the UK it's quite easy to get tired of his schtick, I'm not a fan of his stand-up and so many of his Hollywood roles seem phoned in (though possibly because the studios want a certain rent-a-performance, rather than being his fault). Then I remember how brilliant his performance and writing is in The Office, and he gets a life pass, frankly. It's a very funny show, as is the American version, but his last scene at the end of the second series is an incredible performance and really shows what a different animal the original was:

That said, I'm glad to see him and Merchant focusing on being behind the camera. The trailer looks great and I'll definitely be seeing it.

I think the main kid is Christian Cooke, who's in BBC's Demons. A weird little show, but fun.

This movie looks really good....I usually like Gervais, although he can get a bit old...but this looks like a really good effort.

I'm in

I love me some Ricky Gervais.

However. That song has the exact opposite effect on me in trailers- way too overused.
Also, I understood maybe half the lines from the trailer.

I don't think Ricky Gervais should ever do anything without Stephen Merchant.

I live pretty damn close to Cemetary Junction, and The Office was set where I was born. Crazy.

Kudos for putting Burn Gordon in the movie! I definitely spotted Torchwood's Owen lurking there in the scene where the boys are released from the drunk tanks..

Hmm. I just looked at IMDb and it doesn't look like it has a US release date. Any news on when it might be hitting these shores?

I don't think the song helped at at all; it was so loud I could make out *half the words* in the trailer

*hyperbole, but not much*

OK, I grew up in England, but even I need English subtitles to understand what they are saying because that's not the English accent I used.

Posted by: BWeaves at February 2, 2010 11:07 AM

I can't understand what they're saying. How about subtitles for the film.

tacceber, thanks for linking that scene. Ricky Gervais was brilliant as David Brent - not just because he was hilariously bad at singing/dancing/running a company/filing reports/interacting with humans, but because despite how over the top all of that was, he was so recognizably human. That scene totally breaks my heart. Of course he gets fired - he absolutely deserves to get fired. And yet it's heartbreaking.

Don't underestimate Ricky Gervais's acting.

I'm with the 'don't underestimate Ricky' crowd. He's popular for being an ass, but that ass is predicated upon an extremely complicated personality that just owned the UK Office. I died a million small deaths for David Brent, and he certainly has the lifetime pass from me too. I can't wait to see this.

Aw this seems very lovely! Reminded me of this McAvoy movie I saw ages ago, Starter For Ten. It had the same uncanny way of being funny, romantic and sad all at once. Aw man I just totally sold myself to go see that movie again.

Mona: I totally remember Starter for Ten, and I had the exact same thought while I was watching the trailer!!
