Frankly, I never had much interest in Dustin’s former man crush, Ryan “Abs” Reynolds, but I think plenty of people around here did, sooo…will a scruffy beard pull you back in after that whole Green Lantern business? Myself, I’d be more drawn by the idea of a good thriller, oh and by the by, where have all the good thrillers gone? It seems most are derailed in the third quarter (I’m looking at you, Prisoners and Trance), or ruined by terrible acting (Cameron Diaz in The Counselor) or inexplicably weak scripts. And I love Liam Neeson, but come on already with these Taken things, and that Non-Stop mess I didn’t even bother to watch. At this point, I’m basically so desperate I’ll give anything a chance. Atom Egoyan’s (Devil’s Knot, Chloe, The Sweet Hereafter, Exotica) just-announced Cannes entry, The Captive looks to be a bit of a twist on the usual kidnapping fare, with not only a disappeared child, but a second level of added creepiness you’ll catch onto by watching the trailer. Ryan Reynolds stars as the missing girl’s father, The Killing’s Mireille Enos is wife and mother, and the rest of the cast is decent: Scott Speedman, Rosario Dawson, Kevin Durand and Bruce Greenwood.

Here’s the trailer:

Word is the plot goes unexpected places; let’s hope it’s true. I need a mind-blowing thrill…er. The Captive will premiere at the 67th Cannes Film Festival this May.
