It Doesn't Look Like a Very Silly Place

Starz is moving right along with the development of “Camelot,” the Arthurian retelling that they’re selling as a sexed and violenced up version of the mythology, to fit in with their “Spartacus” money maker. To their credit, they’ve got Joseph Fiennes and Eva Green on board, so they’re making their lives easy right from the start.

Here’s the plot summary:

In the wake of King Uther’s sudden death, chaos threatens to engulf Britain. When the sorcerer Merlin has visions of a dark future, he installs the young and impetuous Arthur, Uther’s unknown son and heir, who has been raised from birth as a commoner. But Arthur’s cold and ambitious half sister Morgan will fight him to the bitter end, summoning unnatural forces to claim the crown in this epic battle for control. These are dark times indeed for the new King, with Guinevere being the only shining light in Arthur’s harsh world. Faced with profound moral decisions, and the challenge of uniting a kingdom broken by war and steeped in deception, Arthur will be tested beyond imagination.

Interesting and along with the trailer below, it’s clear that they’re also going the route of the sword in the stone and the establishment of the Round Table, which fits in most well with the classic Once and Future King route. I have mixed feelings on that. That’s a stunning story of the nature of man, the role of violence and government in society, the crushing weight of duty at odds with want. This is the network of guilty pleasures. The two are not a natural combination. The trailer also shows that there will be a Lady of the Lake though, which is not a feature of the Once and Future King version of the legend at all, so that combined with hot stuff Merlin sort of makes it look more like a mishmash of different sources.

I’m not entirely sold on the actors playing Arthur and Guinevere though, they both just seem like CW actors playing dress up. But in double checking casting facts, I stumbled across something that makes this series worth giving a chance: James Purefoy will be appearing as King Lot. Still no word on when Lancelot will show and who will play him.

Trailer below.

It was hard not to just see Jamie Bower as his "Sweeney Todd" character. That and his distracting beard problems.

Pass.

Jamie Bower also going to be in the pilot for Game of Thrones.

Starz blocked the video in my country.

I'll give it a look. As long as there is sword fighting and sword sheathing I'm pretty easy to please.

Joseph Fiennes looks ridiculous in any movie set in the past 300 years, so he should do well here. Eva Green is aggressively sexy, so that will help. The rest just looks okay.

In other words, I don't see people rushing out to get Starz based on this preview. Besides, who gives a shit about King Arthur at this point? Don't we have about 7,597 stories about him? As long as you jam a sword into a stone somewhere, you can basically make up whatever the hell you want. Any future incarnations of him and Robin Hood should hold hands and jump off the Earth.

The Lady of the Lake will be in it? Good. What about the Laker Girls?

I might watch this. I liked Excalibur, though.

"a sexed and violenced up version of the mythology"

When you've already had Helen Mirren in an Arthur film (Excalibur), it's pretty silly to talk about a sexed up version of the story as if it's something new.

Do they all have to look so greasy?

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at January 6, 2011 10:12 AM

Why do all the main female actors have to wear such over the top eye makeup? It makes it look soooo 2010. None of the extras are wearing eye makeup. Same with the hair, too 2010.

Excalibur was pretty violent and sexed up. And it had Nicol Williamson and Helen Mirren and Carmina Burana playing in the background. I think I'll go watch that again.

Holy crap, they're going to use a different stone?? How innovative.

Posted by: mswas at January 6, 2011 11:06 AM

Nothing to add here except I hates Spartacus so much that Starz is forever tainted for me. Go away Starz, and take your gross miniseries (serieses?) with you. Ew ew ew.

Wouldn't cosmetics be something only for the upper class?

Posted by: mswas at January 6, 2011 11:17 AM

whatever, I'll happily indulge in a Tamsin Egerton fix

It's only a model.

mmmmmm Jamie Bower

Hmm...I love me some King Arthur (favorite version, I think, Parke Godwin's Firelord) but I'm not sure on this one. I will probably eventually netflix it...but the Arthur actor does look too vanilla. (The actors playing Bastias (?) and Leontes (?) are pretty tasty though).

Also, might have to reread Once & Future King, because I do not recognize that book from Wilson's description...

I want to like something with swords and magic, but honestly, I can't stand the King Arthur tragedy. Just about all the women are insipid (except for Morgan, and only then in the Mists of Avalon spin on the tale), and all the men are assholes. It's basically a story about how stupid people will always fuck up a good idea. Do. Not. Want.

At least Game of Thrones has characters you can cheer for, of both genders.

And did anyone else feel that the actors here had just watched the preview video for GoT to figure out what they should say about a fantasy TV show?

Video "blocked in your country on copyright grounds".

Dickheads. Sure, we don't have Starz in Australia, but Spartacus was something of a hit on cable here (and bigger again on channel BitTorrent).

Obviously, Starz are unaware of how proxies work...

Am I the only one who finds Eva Green absolutely terrifying? She looks like some kind of ancient witch demon thing that's coming for my soul.

Posted by: Figgy in Honduras at January 6, 2011 4:54 PM

damn. i can't see this because i live outside the u.s. on second thought, maybe that's a good thing...the only thing i've liked on starz is party down. that was starz right? loved that show.

In the case of Not-Ralph Fiennes, I'm pretty sure that's his everyday look.

We're Knights of the Round Table.
We dance whene'er we're able.
We do routines and chorus scenes
With footwork impeccable.
We dine well here in Camelot.
We eat ham and jam and spam a lot.
We're Knights of the Round Table.
Our shows are formidable,
But many times we're given rhymes
That are quite unsingable.
We're opera mad in Camelot.
We sing from the diaphragm a lot.

In war we're tough and able,
Quite indefatigable.
Between our quests we sequin vests and impersonate Clark Gable.
It's a busy life in Camelot.

I have to push the pram a lot.

Right, let's not go to Camelot.

I'm waiting for someone to do (hopefully a trilogy of) film(s) based on Bernard Cornwell's retelling of King Arthur. This looks to be getting relatively close. So yippee for me.
