Well, Of Course, The Fat One Belches

bridesmaids-movie-poster.jpg

I wouldn’t want to judge a movie too harshly based on a trailer, particularly given the talent assembled for Bridesmaids: Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Melissa McCarthy, Wendi McLendon-Covey and Ellie Kemper. On first blush, however, Bridesmaids does feel like a female comedy driven by men (Judd Apatow produced, and Paul Feig directs). But it was written by Wiig and Annie Mumolo, so hopefully there’s more than the crass frat humor evident in the trailer, as well as female characters identified by the male company they keep. Melissa McCarthy is fun, though. And Rose Byrne is gorgeous. And Kristen Wiig is … kind of an amalgamation of some of her “SNL” characters, which isn’t a particularly high compliment. But, you gotta think there’s a kernel of sincerity buried beneath the jokes, a little substance to stick the comedy to.

Or maybe it’s just The Hangover with ladies. Would’ve been nice if it were Rose Byrne ripping the belches, though.

The fat one has to belch because skinny girls can only fart out lavender scents or Obsession by Calvin Klein.

Awwww, I'm glad Ellie Kemper is getting more work. Love her. Girl crush.

Posted by: Snuggiepants at February 1, 2011 6:22 PM

HAMMMMM! ...Also, for some reason, the video isn't working...

As someone who is rather rotund, I often find myself making pithy comments about fat jokes in movies. Now, I can laugh with the best of them at things that apply to me, so that's not the problem.

The problem is that it's just so damn lazy. Hmm, at a loss for somthing witty to insert into your script - put in a fat joke instead!! Need to devalue someone zaftig in ten word or less - fat joke!! Nobody likes the easy or obvious joke (at least I'd like to think that here we're likely to fit that last statement), and most of the time, that's what making fun of fat people is doing.

I'm not against fat jokes, or really any other obvious jokes that groups of people may find offensive. What I do have problem with, though, is bad jokes.

A belch from a fat chick? Come, now. You can do better than that.

Posted by: noodlestein at February 1, 2011 6:33 PM

In my experience it is usually the redhead that belches in public. And that is because I am that redhead.

Posted by: Pinky McLadybits at February 1, 2011 6:47 PM

I love this, Kristen Wiig wrote herself a film in which she gets to bang Jon Hamm. LIVE THE DREAM, LADY!

Posted by: coveredinbees at February 1, 2011 7:04 PM

Also I loved her reaction face to Rose Byrne's very bitchy comment. I'm not a huge Wiig fan usually, but that drew a chuckle from me.

But yeah Melissa McCarthy's ENTIRE character is not making sense to me. Is she a lesbian stereotype? A fat stereotype? What's going on there?

Posted by: coveredinbees at February 1, 2011 7:06 PM

Oh. Oh, that looks, really, just awful. Just, just awful.

Posted by: Tracer Bullet at February 1, 2011 7:16 PM

Was the cop near the end of the clip Chris O'Dowd from The IT Crowd?

Posted by: TheOtherGreg at February 1, 2011 7:21 PM

Do you think they'll call the sequel Bridesmaids Revisited?

Posted by: The Mutt at February 1, 2011 7:32 PM

God Ellie Kemper is so cute that I just wanna tear here apart. Don't worry, I meant sexually.

Posted by: DangadaDang at February 1, 2011 7:48 PM

This looks mind numbingly awful. But hey, Jon Hamm shirtless, so it's not a total fail.

Posted by: Athena at February 1, 2011 7:53 PM

@TheOtherGreg, indeed that was O'Dowd. Despite his presence I doubt I'll look out for this, since the trailer produced not even the hint of a grin from me.

Posted by: Groundloop at February 1, 2011 8:01 PM

Yes, that is Chris O'Dowd. And poor Melissa McCarthy. She is so much better than this role. As pointed out above, it's just so lazy. Also, what did they do to her? She has been uglied up to hell. Melissa is a very pretty woman, and you would never guess it from the way she's styled in this! Ugh. Hate.

DITTO.

Poor Sookie.

Posted by: grace b at February 1, 2011 8:19 PM

The Hamm!!!!! I'm in.

Posted by: Bettie at February 1, 2011 8:24 PM

What exactly makes us think that Kristen Wiig can write anything decent? Oh, Paul Feig, how hard up are you for money?

Posted by: Three-nineteen at February 1, 2011 8:38 PM

Looks pretty fucking stupid to me. Which I guess would make it like The Hangover.

Posted by: Craigilicious at February 1, 2011 8:58 PM

...I don't know any of these people...

Posted by: Candee at February 1, 2011 9:16 PM

Sookie can do so much better than this. She deserves better than this.

Posted by: Austin at February 1, 2011 9:36 PM

21 Dresses made the Bridesmaid Revisited pun at the end. And I wept a little for Evelyn Waugh and Sebastian Flyte.

This...could be good? It reminds me of Baby Mama - good pedigree, but high potential to disappoint. I'm a little glad to see Melissa McCarthy gets a new character persona, but did it have to be the butch belching one?

Posted by: Empress of All the Russias at February 1, 2011 10:13 PM

Wait, that's Sookie???? What the HELL?

Posted by: Snuggiepants at February 1, 2011 10:28 PM

Where there's HAAAAAAAAAAAMMMMMMMM, there's usually Figgy. I sure hope she hasn't been buried in the snow...

Posted by: Uriah Creep at February 1, 2011 10:41 PM

That actually did make me laugh. Just quietly - nothing obnoxious. More like a small chuckle if I'm honest. I think it was mainly the inclusion of AC/DC that put me in a happy frame of mind.

NB: I'm actually watching Hellcats right now and enjoying the crap out of it, so my taste really cannot be trusted.

Posted by: squeeziee at February 1, 2011 11:23 PM

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMM!

Hands off, bitches, he's mine. I have the papers.

Hmm. This looks like it could have potential. I love Melissa McCarthy, Ellie Kemper and Clementine Jones.

I am, however, sick of this stupid 'things bridesmaids and maids of honor HAVE TO DO'. Fuck that shit. All I made my MOH do was show up and do a reading. If you're making forcing your best friend to do anything, you're just a shitty friend.

Posted by: Figgy at February 1, 2011 11:44 PM

Good lord that was boring and long.

Posted by: brdkelli at February 2, 2011 12:45 AM

Not to mimic most of the other opinions from the peanut gallery, but I, too, agree that I am imminently conflicted about this. Good on paper and yet...not so much in execution.

However, I think HAAAAAAAAMMMMMMMM! could make an entire career outta being post-coitally (???) shirtless, hot and hilariously dismissive. What a cocktail.

So, yeah. That's all.

Posted by: Vonnegut Slut at February 2, 2011 1:32 AM

Indeed, Figgy. And frankly, why would you say yes to that unless it was for someone you adore? I was my sister's maid of honor and loved it.

Posted by: Alarmjaguar at February 2, 2011 2:41 AM

@noodlestein,
I think it's funny how even when you're criticizing lame fat jokes in our culture, you still have to go out of your way to say you like them or people will eat you alive.

THEY DON'T FART AT ALL.

Jeez, I'm having breakfast here.

Posted by: zeke the pig at February 2, 2011 4:54 AM

Where's Mike Tyson?

This looks derivative, boring and above all...stupid. Yup, Judd Apatow had a hand in this.

Posted by: Uncle JR at February 2, 2011 8:39 AM

Aw, that makes me sad what they did to Melissa there. I always thought she have Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel a run for their money on Gilmore Girls. I barely recognised her here. So, apparantly, bigger girls can't have eyeliner like the pretty girls. And what is with the golf hats?

Posted by: hersheygirl at February 2, 2011 9:23 AM

Rule #1 for every comedy: Does it make me laugh?

Anwer: Yes

Posted by: OldSchool60 at February 2, 2011 9:28 AM

Could somebody tell me why women are supposed to scream and get excited when somebody announces she's engaged?
As I see it, either your friend has been with the guy (or girl) for a while and has been building toward this steadily and therefore, at best it's an expected event. Or, your friend is rushing into something very soon in which case, screaming in joy might not be the best response. Or it's somewhere in between and did come as somewhat of a surprise but it's not as if she just won a Nobel for peace work, right? All she did was agree to couple somewhat permanently with someone.
Why am I expected to jump around and squeal because she just managed to escape the dreaded fate of what? Being a single woman?

Posted by: PaddyDog at February 2, 2011 11:52 AM

I like Rose Byrne trying out a new character type...but the rest does look pretty terrible. Due to the snow and my laziness I watched "He's Just Not Into You" yesterday...and I wonder if there actually are weddings where relatives/friends make people feel like crap for being single, or imply that they should feel like crap.

If yes, I thank my lucky stars for my family...

Posted by: Sara Tonin at February 2, 2011 1:26 PM

Sara Tonin I was bridesmaid this summer, a delight in itself. At the wedding me and the other bridesmaid were chatting to one of the bride's aunts, it went like this:

other BM: 'oh, he's just over there, the tall one with the, eh, I'll be right back' (goes to deal with drunken Boyfriend)
Aunt: And so, where's your boyfriend?
Me: Oh I don't have one.
Aunt: so you're here on your own
Me: (maintaining admirably even tone because I can see where this is heading) Well except for all my friends, sure I'm on my own.
Aunt: (patronising) Well that's ok too.
Me: (Exasperated) I know.

Posted by: captainfireypants at February 3, 2011 6:22 AM

that's JUST so disappointing. didn't laugh. not once.
