Boy Wonder Trailer: What Would Happen If Batman Was Young, Broke, And Psychotic?

Boy Wonder is one of those films that was nowhere near my radar until the trailer popped up online a few days ago. I love the concept, really, and it gets executed as well as the trailer makes it look, it could be a pretty great, dark vigilante film. The premise is… well, it’s Batman. A boy’s family is slain in front of him, he grows up and trains himself and begins taking revenge on the criminals of his city.

The catch with Boy Wonder is that he’s not a billionaire, he has no fancy gadgetry, no costume… and he kills people without hesitation or remorse. It’s less about a quest for justice and more about a path born of bloodthirsty vengeance. In fact, the better comparison is probably The Punisher. The idea itself isn’t new, but this iteration of it looks like it could be a dark, gritty, intense experience. It’s the first film from writer/director Michael Morris, and the first starring role for Caleb Steinmeyer, who plays the young man in question. In fact, most of the actors are unknowns — the only name I recognized was James Russo, who I best remember as Axel Foley’s buddy who gets killed in Beverly Hills Cop. Anyway, I’m interested.

Take a look:

They never use the nicer looking subway cars with the digital displays in gritty, dark New York movies. Always the old uncomfortable 3 train kind.

I think this looks stellar.

This reminds me of Squadron Supreme (nerd, I know). This kid is like Nitehawk. Same kind of situation as batman but in his case it made him a furious loner. I always find it intersted when I see these "what if" types of films. If Bruce Wayne hadn't been raised by a kind Alfred, what would happen? It also has a boondock saints vibe with the whole "hero or villian" angle. I will say, I'm intrigued.

Really? Charles Bronson isn't that effin old is he?

I dunno, this looks like all kinds of meh to me. Interesting concept, but the movie looks kinda sloppy.

Saw it at NYCC. It's ok. The good far outweighs the bad. The director/writer has been selling it as Black Swan meets Kick-Ass. It's coming to Netflix and Hulu next month.

Um, isn't Charles Bronson dead? That would be a whole nother level- zombie revenge. Not even death can contain his rage

Liking the premise but the trailer is corny as hell.

Love the idea of a badass Robin. Now if only Chris Nolan could touch up the script a bit...

Ahh, with the header and all, for a second I thought we were getting a Damian Wayne or Jason Todd movie, and I got really excited. This looks pretty cool, though.

The booth I was working at all weekend was right across the aisle from this one at NYCC, and it seemed really weird and hastily thrown together.

If it doesn't suck as much as I assumed it would, that's nice, though.

Batman. Doesn't. Kill.

Other than that, THIS LOOKS BLOODY FANTASTIC.
