Best Worst Movie, the documentary about what is purportedly the best bad movie of all time, Troll 2, has been making the rounds at every conceivable film fest in existence for the past three months and yet I’ve managed to miss it a couple of times. Both Prisco and Dan have seen it, and Dan even raved about it at his day job over at The Hollywood Reporter. He wrote:

Relegated to late-night cable upon release in 1990, the film did nothing but haunt its stars, including Michael Stephenson, who played the ttle character in the film and who wanted nothing more than to grow up outside its shadow. “I couldn’t get away from it,” Stephenson told us in an interview. “I had kids at school that would scream my lines out at me.”

But, as so often happens, what was reviled by one generation came to be loved by another … So, lying in bed one morning, Stephenson came to a realization: he was the star of the star of the worst movie ever made. “And I thought, I’ve got to make a documentary of this called Best Worst Movie.”

The resulting documentary is a fantastic and sweet-natured look at the people who love the film and the people who made it.

When the movie was making the rounds earlier, the best they could muster was a six-minute trailer, but now that it’s aiming for theatrical distribution (I don’t believe it’s managed to get a distributor yet), they’ve premiered a more appropriately sized trailer, clocking in at just over two minutes. Anyone who has ever witnessed the infinite glory that is Troll 2 (which is great, but — in my opinion — not as stellar as Leprechaun 2, briefly featuring Clint Howard), it’s a must-see documentary. Check out the trailer:

I have not seen Troll 2 or this documentary, but the doc seems very sweet. You always hear stories about child actors or people that were never able to live down certain movie lines or roles they did (read that Leo DiCaprio gets livid if you mention he was in Critters 3) but I think it's nice that this guy "embraced the cheese" as I call it. Trolls 2 lives!

Where's the Seductive Corn Witch?

At my last job, my office mate and I used to yell out that famous line every time things got too tense or dull around the office (which was always). Of course, our co-workers did not share our love of good-bad movies, so they had no idea what we were talking about. At least once each day someone would come to our office door, hear a snippet of our conversation, then shake their head in disgust and/or confusion and walk away.

Did my eyes deceive me, or was there a gigantic line to see a triple feature of Gremlins, Howard the Duck, and Troll II? Is Gremlins considered a bad film? Or did I miss the "2" after the title on the marquee?

I must see this doc. Troll II is magnificent for being so horrible.

This looks awesome. Troll 2 is one of my all-time favorite bad movies and I must have watched it 40 or 50 times in college. It's timeless.

And the Mates of State song playing during the trailer is cool, too.

Wait, Robert. Gremlins 2 is considered a bad film? It's basically a live action cartoon. It's wacky and fun as hell. Plus, the giant musical number is just brilliant.

I agree. Gremlins 2 is a great movie.

Gremlins 2 is brilliant. Bow before the glory that is John Glover, BOW I say!

I'm pretty sure "Plan 9 From Outer Space" is still the worst movie ever. I mean, come on. They kept using the same shots of Bela Lugosi because he died during filming! That's gotta count!

The doc looks great, but the Coleman Francis movies are better/worse for me.

Troll II, Plan 9 From Outer Space...these are lovable films that only insane, possibly self deluded geniuses could fight for to create. Its why we love them. But for my money, Battlefield Earth has to be the worst film of all time. Nowhere will you see as much money, talent (Okay only Forrest Whittaker but still), and a premise so insane, yet so serious and real to the nutbags behind it.. it has to be the worst of all time. Yeah Plan 9 looked like shit...but they didn't spend a hundred million for it to look like shit. I cannot sit for 30 seconds without nearly passing out from laughter watching Battlefield Earth. Its pure insanity.

I think I saw this when I was a very young child. Sixish? I think it scared me.

How did I know Clint Howard would be mentioned when i saw the title "best worst movie"?

Posted by: adam at May 4, 2009 10:35 PM

I saw Troll 2 when I was little and it scared the shit out of me. To date, I have never seen a movie that scared me more than that movie did (I was really little). I had nightmares for months where I was turned into a plant and eaten.
I would love to watch it as an adult and laugh at how horrible of a movie it probably is.
P.S. I loved the guy in this trailer with the "Nilbog" shirt.

Posted by: Borg at May 5, 2009 9:30 AM

Oh my how I loved this movie when I was little...I must've seen it about 100 times then slowly forgot about it. This looks awesome.
I want a Nilbog shirt.

I work at a video store, and, no joke, someone who read this post came in yesterday and rented 'Troll 2.' It was kind of surreal.
