The first trailer for Cameron Crowe’s new movie, Aloha, was released today, and it may be too early to be calling it a “return to form,” but I don’t care. I’m excited. For many of us, Crowe defined what it was to be young, uncool, and tragically in love. He hit a bit of a rough patch, though, after Almost Famous, when he entered his Vanilla Sky/Elizabethtown/We Bought a Zoo phase. For the last 15 years, there’s been a Cameron Crowe-shaped hole in our hearts, waiting for something truly great from the man who gave us Singles and Say Anything. Admittedly, this is a LOT to pin on one movie. And while this trailer doesn’t make Aloha doesn’t look like the greatest movie ever, it does have a lot to be hopeful about. For one, Crowe’s movies are so different from standard film fare that they can be difficult to capture in a two minute teaser. And he seems to have found himself a great cast. Bradley Cooper, in particular looks to be able to handle Crowe’s particular brand of optimistic ranting without slipping into saccharine gushing, something not every actor can do, no matter how talented they may be (sorry, Matt Damon).

Here’s the plot summary:
A celebrated military contractor returns to the site of his greatest career triumphs and re-connects with a long-ago love while unexpectedly falling for the hard-charging Air Force watchdog assigned to him.
What do we think? Are we excited, or does it look Blandsville?
