The Greatest Story Never Told / TK

I haven’t the words for how excited I am about this project. For once, I’m not here to tell you about shitty remakes, pathetic reboots, dumbass adaptations or any of the rapacious stupidity that infects Hollywood like a biblical plague.

Instead, I’m here to give you a gift. The gift of Anvil, a metal band that was a star of the early 80’s scene that inexplicably never took off. It seems like every other band of their era made it big, but for some reason, they never did. But finally, they’re getting their due, thanks to a documentary by Sacha Gervasi, a previously unknown film maker.

It might be because I’m half-drunk (OK, 3/4 drunk), but watching this trailer brought a lump to my throat and a pang in my chest. It’s one of those surprisingly sweet-looking trailers that’s going to make you want to rush out and buy their album, even though it’s almost 30 years old and you’ve never heard of them. And let me tell you, as one of the rare few that owns Metal on Metal: It won’t be wasted coin. Anyway, this one is high on my list for SXSW films to catch. Enjoy.

.... chills. Looks interesting, and a few of the riffs I heard were pretty good too.

Wait, an almost real-life version of This is Spinal Tap?

I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

That reminds me...is there any sort of plan for SXSW? As in, some place of libations at which people are gathering? Or is this just a 'go where the spirit takes us' kind of thing?

Duane Wait, an almost real-life version of This is Spinal Tap?

Even just in the trailer the number of similarities is eerie.

Take away the guitar and the cat on the right reminds me of the fellow who lives in the alley behind my house. He occasionally uses my backyard as a place to deposit his sick-ups between shifts of yelling at garbage cans.

Wait--there was a metal band in the '80s that *didn't* make it? Fans of the genre must feel so...cheated.

First failed pro wrestlers, now failed metalheads. You know what? And this goes for Yankee fans and Republicans, too: If something you loved dominated a decade, just be happy with that. Don't whine to the rest of us because it had to end. In 20 years are we going to be watching hedge-fund managers and right-wing pundits tearfully remembering the good times? "Rush Limbaugh snorted oxycontin off my daughter's belly! A moment like that comes once in a lifetime!"

Sure, I'll see it. I love rockumentaries. I'm just saying, for some of us, that shit was a plague.

phaedawg I vote for Gingerman for the SXSW boozehoundery. Or Opal's...

I wasn't sure if it was fake until I saw Lemmy. All of a sudden that shit got real.

Posted by: Optimus Rhyme at March 12, 2009 1:17 PM

Ok, but the director's name is Sacha (Baron Cohen) (Ricky) Gervasi and one of the band members is fucking ROBB REINER!?! This has to be fake, right?

Posted by: Idris_Arslanian at March 12, 2009 1:45 PM

This is already out in the UK and has got nothing but good reviews.
They're a real band who were gonna be "the next big thing" back in the day....
This is Gervasi's first film as a director (tho he has a couple of screenwriting credits including The Terminal to his name).
Hope this clers a few things up.

As a kid living in Germany way back when, I did buy the Anvil album Metal On Metal when it came out. If I remember correctly, I bought it alongside such classics as Angel Witch and Venom's Welcome To Hell as well as such other craptastic metal albums as the first Manowar.

All I remember is hating it, really hating it. I hated Anvil more than I hated Saxon and that is really saying something.

I own "Metal On Metal"...on picture disc vinyl, no less.

Stella: Right on, I was thinking Gingerman too. Seems like the right fit for the Pajiba crowd, and fortunately they haven't shut down that location yet. I usually drift between there, the Elephant Room, and Lovejoy's myself.

Boo...we're seeing this when you come to Philly.

Posted by: PissBoy at March 13, 2009 8:19 AM

I saw it on Monday here in London. It's really specially wonderful and you should all see it. Lots of sly - but never snipey - Tap nods. Very funny but never takes the piss out of them. And genuinely moving. It's just great.

Posted by: lethalbuzzle at March 13, 2009 10:44 AM

Oh, and they've actually made thirteen albums. The list of titles is hysterical.
