Family First

I usually don’t pay much attention to the whole Down Under region, which is to my detriment. They’re some seriously disturbed individuals with a penchant for action-y, heavily violent flicks. SXSW has been a launch pad for several fantastically gory films like The Horseman and The Loved Ones.

Sundance premiered this little gem — featuring a re-emergence of Guy Pearce — called Animal Kingdom. Apparently, it’s about a family of criminals coming undone when their son rats them out. Dustin seems juiced about this trailer (ummmm … Air Supply! — DR), but to me it looks a little pre-fabricated balsa-wood dinosaur parts. However, based on previous experience with underwhelming trailers from Kiwi-Aussie films, this is gonna be pretty incredible. Plus, it’s been buzzing like a beard of bees. And we all know that film critics are never hyperbolic.

Is it me or is the new trend for previews/commercials to have that big, oddly 70's-ish typography font flash on screen? (is typography [type set?] even the right word? My sister is going to be pissed I don't know).
Hulu has it all the time on the adverts that play for Save Haiti and the windfarm project. And now it's popping up on Aussie trailers.

Guy Pearce...in my pants.

Now that's a chipper thought for a dreary Monday.

Okay, this looks pretty fantastic. I'm getting excited!

Well THAT'S a mistake. Ammiright, ladies? Ammmiright?

P.S. I wish Joel Edgerton were the Aussie export du jour and not STUPID Sam Worthington.

Yeaah. Like I'm going to say no to the lethal combo of Guy Pearce and Joel Edgerton (whom I suspect won't be wearing the heels this time around).

I could go on a pride rant about how awesome Australian movies are, being Australian and all, but that would be lame. Instead all I'm going to say is watch The Square.

Watch Last Ride starring Hugo Weaving. Best Aussie film in ages. The Square is also pretty good, but Last Ride is amazing.

Yay, Joel Edgerton! I hope this movie gives him in the break in Hollywood he rightfully deserves.

I worked on Animal Kingdom (no, not as an extra) and having seen the final cut, the teaser and the trailer don't do it justice. It won the World Cinema prize at Sundance for a very good reason. There's not many Aussie films to recommend these days, but this one is a doozy.

Joel Edgerton is a great actor, I was pleased to hear that he was Uncle Owen in the new Star Wars, but the new trilogy being what it is, he didn't get the break trough he surely deserves.

I discovered him on a aussie show called The Secret Life of Us (the aussie guy punching Basilone in part 3 of The Pacific was in it too, and he too is a pretty great actor), and he was really amazing in that, which is kinda remarkable given that it was just a tv drama, a guilty pleasure in which clichéd dialogues weren't uncommon but that I used to like foundly.

Anyway, he's talented

I think I just wet myself.

...in more ways than one.

On a different note, Jacki Weaver is fucking magic.

Rg, I loved the first two seasons of The Secret Life of Us. After Joel left, it wasn't the same. He is an amazing actor and I always get rather excited when he is in a new film, even the god awful Whisper, which I sat through just for him.
