And I Ain't Seen the Sunshine Since I Don't Know When

When I first read about “Prison Break” producers Matt Olmstead and Nick Santora creating another jail-related show for A & E, I didn’t pay a whole lot of attention — why would they do something so similar? Admittedly, “Prison Break” was my guilty pleasure, mostly for the fleshed out characters and the show’s winning combination of terror and comic relief. The first and second seasons were damned good, the third ran off the rails and the fourth was mostly tiresome, though I sneaked back here and there to see what was happening. While “Breakout Kings” was originally developed for Fox, they passed on the show and A & E snapped it up. That was likely a smart for both networks; on Fox the series might have felt like a retread, but for A & E (which doesn’t have a lot of scripted dramas) it could be a standout.

The premise of “Breakout Kings” is different from “Prison Break” in that instead of a bunch of cons trying to get out of jail, there is a group of jailbirds offered a conditional release to work with U. S. Marshals to track down fugitives. Now if you think about that for a minute, it just sounds stupid. What kind of idiot Marshals can’t figure out anything that the felons can? Aren’t the cops supposed to be smarter? But for a television show, I’m willing to suspend my disbelief if the show is entertaining and the characters and actors are good and astonishingly, this trailer holds some promise. It might not be a thinking man’s show, but but it’s got a couple of funny moments, explosions and guest stars everyone’s favorite con man, T-Bag (Robert Knepper):

“Breakout Kings” stars Laz Alonso (Avatar, The Fast and the Furious), Malcolm Goodwin (Leatherheads, American Gangster), Domenick Lombardozzi (Public Enemies, “The Wire”), Jimmi Simpson (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” Zodiac), Serinda Swan (Tron: Legacy) and Brooke Nevin (nothing to speak of) and premieres on A & E, March 6th.

Well, Domenick Lombardozzi is the only one I've even heard of, but it looks like it might be fun.

Regardless, Johnny Cash FTW!

I saw main villain from the last season of Heroes in there as well. It would be interesting to see him on a show that's actually trying.
