Here it is, folks! The first teaser trailer for Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, which hits theaters next March. I think we’ll let the trailer do all the speaking for us, except to say: It looks pretty much exactly as you’d imagine an Alice in Wonderland adaptation from Tim Burton might, and Johnny Depp kicks some rabbit hole ass.
I thought the mad hatter was blended alive in Nightmare on Elm Street, but the beast lives.
At least this has to be better than the Willy Wonka remake.

I wasn't interested until I saw that trailer. Looks good

Part of this looks very much as I imagined it, and part of it is just too, too freaky. And the Mad Hatter only plays a very small role, so has he been beefed up for the movie, just because he's Jon Jon Depp?

I'm a little rusty on my Alice in Wonderland, but wasn't it the Duchess' baby that become a piglet? Speaking of the top pic of course.
Goldie, yes, the Duchess is the one suckling a baby, and it turns into a pig when she throws it at Alice.
I'm betting the Duchess does not make an appearance in this movie. She's based on the ugliest woman in history. I think Burton would rather take pretty people and make them ugly, rather than start with an ugger.

Helena Bonham Carter's giant bobble head (told you, Sharon!) is freaking me right the hell out. I can tell you right now that the pseudo-Mr. will be skipping this one.
You know, it actually doesn't look as creepy as most Burton fare. Mostly just staggeringly beautiful. And for the 3D showing, I may have to spike peoples' drinks, just to watch FLIP OUT!!!
And you are correct, BWeaves, they do seem to be amping it up for Jon Jon, but this is supposed to be a "10 years later" story, so really Burton can do whatever he pleases. Which he usually does, anyway.

If one were the sort of person to, uh, go on... shall we say trips? yes? This would look like a fabulous movie to, uh, see while on one of those trips.
Either that or it would send you gibbering into utter madness and you'd have to be committed for the rest of your life.
Okay, the Cheshire Cat is giving me a Critters vibe, and it is freaking me out.
I HEARTZ the Cheshire Cat. I want to see it just for the Cheshire Cat. I want this movie to be NOW.
Johnny Depp starring in "Alice in Wonderland". Not because it's Johnny or "Alice" but because....that's kinda like saying Leonardo DiCaprio starring in "Wonder Woman".

I've grown weary of the Deppurtonham beast. That's right, bitches, I said it.
I'd say it louder too, if there were only some way to...
Oh yeah...
I'VE GROWN WEARY OF THE DEPPURTONHAM BEAST!
Thanks, CapsLock key - I owe you a soder-pop, my good man. As for you, Bold HTML, I'm afraid that evens us out for the time you stabbed me in Vegas...

It looks beautiful, and frightening.
Posted by: Kolby at July 22, 2009 3:23 PM
I feel like I've seen this movie already...
Posted by: annoyingmouse at July 22, 2009 3:24 PM
I'm seeing the Critters inspiration in the Cheshire Cat too, Snath. Those bastardly nightmare creatures haunting my dreams after I saw that movie at the tender age of four. Too many razor sharp teeth, which I'm sure come in multiple sets like sharks. That's just how nightmare creatures roll.

I can't wait for th---*eyes widen*
HOLY SHIT, IT'S SKITZ!!!!!!
I thought you were dead, man.
Posted by: Kballs at July 22, 2009 3:35 PM
Skitz was in a drunken gravy stupor and couldn't post.
For some reason I expected the White Rabbit to pull out a .45 Magnum from his vest instead of a pocket-watch. I guess I assume every contemporary remake of a classic story will have much more violence.
Would have been an interesting take, though.

Aaaaand there goes the trailer. Wait....lemme youtube.......I can't wait to see this. Although my love for Mr. Depp may be forever changed, because it was a loved based entirely on his looks and Tim Burton has done a fine job of fucking those looks up.
lizzieborden you'll have to take a special trip for 9 as well. That movive looks delicious.

Okay AvB, but it could depend on how you look at it. Is her head oversized, or her body (and therefore HANDS) undersized?
Since I have a baby hand phobia, this is a very important distinction. I'm willing to go with giant head.
I'm seeing this. That is all, except to say that Depp not only kicks some rabbit hole ass, he also kicks rabbit ass hole!
Posted by: David at July 22, 2009 6:04 PM
Crispin Glover as the Knave of Hearts was looking kind of sexy.
Oh so THAT's who it was. I was terribly confused there. "Whoa, he looks awesome - except who the hell is he?"
I dunno about this. I'll probably go see it just out of curiosity, but I'm still on the fence as to whether it's cool or just too over the top...
Posted by: Linda at July 22, 2009 6:14 PM
Hmm, it's hard to say, myysharona (formerly Sharon). The perspective is odd... either way, though, it's pretty damn creepy.
I did actually forget to say, this looks stunning. I do question whether the Mad Hatter will be doing voiceover narration the whole film, or whether that's just the trailer? I'm hoping just the trailer. I don't think I'd like it for the whole length of the movie. Also, since this is supposed to be ten years later, will the story follow the same trajectory, or will there be differences, either subtle or major? I kind of can't wait to see what he does with it.
Can't see it either, though Google is saying that Disney claimed copyright infringement. Something about it not coming out until Comi-con?
Posted by: pereka at July 22, 2009 7:34 PM
Johnny Depp in this looks like Tony Alva with lipstick.
And now you shush me, as if it were a bad thing...
Posted by: Stacy D at July 22, 2009 7:49 PM
1:19, anybody else notice the "I don't the look of it" oompa loompa theme up in there?
Posted by: pissant at July 22, 2009 7:49 PM
HOLY CRAP! I have to see that in IMAX 3D. I'm a slave to Johnny Depp anyway, but I bet this movie in IMAX 3D would be quite fun. Even if it turns out to be a shitty movie.
Tangentially, the Cheshire Cat is one of my all-time favorite literary and cartoon characters. If I could have a super-power it would be to disappear and teleport, leaving a fading smile behind to mark my last location. Hey, that would be a great diversion. The Pajibans superpower of choice and shenanigans they would use it for. Has that been done yet?
Is it me or does Johnny Depp's Hatter look a bit like a red-headed, gap-toothed Madonna?
It looks amazing anyway.
Posted by: Gistine at July 22, 2009 8:29 PM
It looks fine. I mean, Dustin is right, it looks like it's exactly what I thought it would be, which is both good and bad. There are no elements of the trailer that jump out at me, though.
Anyone else wish that this would have been a Bryan Fuller/Barry Sonnenfeld project? I mean, Sonnenfeld's made some garbage, but he seems to do well with whimsical, off-beat stories. *sigh* I guess I can only dream of the day when Bryan Fuller does a feature...

I'm with you, Gistine. I just didn't know what I thought until you spelled it out. Seriously, thank you. I kept thinking he looked like someone familiar and that is EXACTLY it. I may now rest.
...hands folded on my stomach, pondering my feelings about this matter.
Heeeheehee... indeed.

Crispin Glover, with his white face & black hair, reminds me of Kai from Lexx. Anyone know what I'm talking about?
Posted by: MelBivDevoe at July 22, 2009 11:31 PM
Hrm. I feel like I've seen this and seen it done better. I'm also getting tired of the Deppurtonham beast. I'm also tired of EVERY SINGLE DAMN FANTASY movie being CHOCK FULL of cheesy CG, until it looks as dated as a bad video game, even by the time it comes out (I'm looking at you centaurs in Harry Potter).
I'm also over people who haven't read the book being ga-ga over Alice in Wonderland (usually, those who spend a little too much time with their American McGee's Alice figures from Hot Topic.)
Posted by: Rowen at July 23, 2009 12:46 AM
I'm excited. I don't care if something has become a bit of a trend, if it's a good one. And it is just a whole lotta visual appeal, right thurr.
Maybe I just missed out on the whole goth thing, but this looks lovely and creepazoid and I'd like to see what they do with the story. This is also why I'd have Depp over, say, Bale in an instant - it's freeform vs control.

I think it looks like shit.
There, I said it. I love the book and the animated film, but this looks like Tim Burton took a steaming hot CGI laden shit all over the place. And I don't care if Depp is in it.
As for the looks of the Mad Hatter, I think Depp resembles a cracked out Elijah Wood after an unfortunate hair dye and a close encounter with some exposed wires.
Posted by: piedlourde at July 23, 2009 1:44 PM
Well looks like my halloween costume is set.
I wish it was a little less Burton, a little more whimsy, say Stardust or so.
If you've seen In Treatment you know that Alice is going to be fantstic. That teenager can act!
Posted by: amanda47 at July 23, 2009 3:24 PM
So, so late. . . but. . . I would totally have Tim Burton (and Danny Elfman's) podchild babies. Is that bad?
Posted by: Captain Steve at July 26, 2009 11:29 PM
I saw "...Chocolate Factory" while on one of those, um, trips? I won't be doing that again. especially if I see it in 3D...I was reduced to a mushroom addled hysteria that lasted for eternities...or what seemed like eternities
The artist Michael Kutsche did some amazing character designs for the movie, he already posted a few on his site: http://michaelkutsche.deviantart.com/
Aaaahhhh!
