A Little Dose of Monday Morning Hope for the Future of Mankind

The first trailer for David O. Russell’s The Fighter, starring Mark Wahlberg, Amy Adams, and Christian Bale (plus Melissa Leo) looked pretty good. It was a Hollywood trailer, all flash cuts, punches, and screams. I was excited for it, though it looked like a fairly typical awards-contending boxing film (has anyone noticed that, of all the sports, only boxing films reap Oscar attention — see Million Dollar Baby, Rocky, Cinderella Man, Raging Bull and even The Wrestler).

This second trailer, released during last night’s finale of “Mad Men,” is markedly better, and seems more directed at the type of people who watch “Mad Men.” I also imagine it’s a much better representation of the movie. If so, it’s going to be balls-out damntastic. Christian Bale is Machinist creepy, and Wahlberg is selling it like he fucking needs that awards recognition.

It looks brilliant. Really goddamn brilliant.

BASED! ON! A! TRUE! STORY!

roughly translates to

SOMEONE! WANTS! OSCAR! GOLD!

Because everyone who uses the Internet know all caps means it's serious business.

You knew a good story was hiding under all that machismo in the first trailer. Bale doesn't go for mindless entertainment, and Adams only does it when Disney bends over and sprays gold bullion all over her.

Irish Mickey Ward. If fighters like him didn't exist, boxing would shrivel up and die. He absorbed an astonishing amount of punishment, and I LOVE Bale's repeated line wondering why he takes it. The creator of this trailer deserves a raise.

Looks good minus the obnoxious tuning of musical instruments sound. Made me cringe.

"Sir, that's not a Mohawk, that's a string of false eyelashes."

I love the Fug Girls.

this trailer looks solid but that doesn't mean anything. i'll wait for the reviews here and elsewhere before forking over my ten bucks. it is ten bucks these days, isn't it? oh, who the hell am i kidding? i'll download this for free when the dvd comes out like i do with nearly everything else. i know it's wrong but i really don't care.

Speaking of boxing ...
There was a promo for a new show called Lights Out {on FX}. It starts in
January and looks, uhm, decent.
And by the damn way. Really!? 5 or 6 promos for some Walking Dead show
during my Mad Men?. Please make that crap stop.

Who knew, Marky Mark, who knew.

Damn but I love Christian Bale. He's amazing even in a 2 minute trailer.

Bale's heart has to give out at some point for all the transformations he goes through. I actually enjoyed the music tuning sounds, but I also like bag pipes and violins, plus it ads to that buildup. I think boxing wins because the narrative can focus on the single person responsible. Doesn't always work for other sports.
