The first trailer for David O. Russell's The Fighter, starring Mark Wahlberg, Amy Adams, and Christian Bale (plus Melissa Leo) looked pretty good. It was a Hollywood trailer, all flash cuts, punches, and screams. I was excited for it, though it looked like a fairly typical awards-contending boxing film (has anyone noticed that, of all the sports, only boxing films reap Oscar attention -- see Million Dollar Baby, Rocky, Cinderella Man, Raging Bull and even The Wrestler).

This second trailer, released during last night's finale of "Mad Men," is markedly better, and seems more directed at the type of people who watch "Mad Men." I also imagine it's a much better representation of the movie. If so, it's going to be balls-out damntastic. Christian Bale is Machinist creepy, and Wahlberg is selling it like he fucking needs that awards recognition.

It looks brilliant. Really goddamn brilliant.
