Star Wars Turns 32

And Production on '77 Turns 7 / Dustin Rowles

Trailers | May 26, 2009 | Comments (15)

To celebrate the 32nd anniversary of Star Wars (the official anniversary was yesterday), we’re running the new trailer for ‘77, Patrick Read Johnson’s autobiographical tale about his obsession with Star Wars. Basically, the movie has been in production of some sort for years now — a semi-finished product was even submitted to an awards festival three years ago. Unfortunately, according to Starlog, Johnson — who also directed the amazing Angus — apparently ran out of money in post-production and by the time he was ready to recut the film, his crew had gone their separate ways. So, the movie has been floating around unfinished for years. Johnson, however, is back at work on it, and plans get it ready for a distribution deal in November. There’s still no release date in sight, however. And the film’s star, John Francis Daley (“Freaks and Geeks”) who was around 20 when filming began, may be approaching middle age by the time it is released.

But if the trailer is any indication of how good ‘77 is going to be, it may be worth the wait. I am not a huge fan of Star Wars myself, but I adore everything about the sentiment in ‘77. We’ve shown a variation of this trailer, I think, three times already (it was once called 5-25-77, and we may show another four variations, but if we show it enough, maybe the damn movie will finally come out.

Ahhhh 1977, the year of awesome. I think the movie looks like it could be a good time. Kind of quirky-geeky-spazzy with a heart.

i've never been able to figure out if my love of Star Wars was related to the fact that we have the same birthday, or if that was just a way cool coincidence.

I adore everything about this trailer. I am crying tears of love right now.

It has clearly been awhile since I have known the touch of a woman.

All I gotta say is:

SOLO shot FIRST, you fat-necked bastard!

Have you ever seen Tom Hanks' story on Star Wars. He had to wait 2 weeks for it to come to his hometown and for 2 weeks all he heard nationally was how Star Wars was the coolest movie EVER. It's kind of funny.

BarbadoSlim>> If you say Solo fired first, that implies Greedo fired at all. Greedo doesn't even get a damn shot off. :- )

Regarding 5-25-77 or whatever it ends up being called, I saw the rough cut at the Star Wars convention a couple years ago. It was more than a little overwrought for me, but it comes from the heart and is a respectable effort.

What he said.

Are you reading us? You swollen necked fuck!

Oh god oh god oh god, I'm having flashbacks. Make it stop.

1. I graduated highschool in 1977 and our school colors were gold and blue, just like the colors of the 77 in the logo at the end.

2. I started college early, the summer of 77, and the girl in the dorm room next door saw Star Wars the first day it came out. She came into my room and acted it out for me like the kid in the movie did. I thought she was a freak. I didn't have a car and had to wait another month before I could see the movie, so I didn't know what the hell she was doing.

Greedo may not get a shot off, but he faceplants pretty good!

What, he needs an editor? I do that. Probably for free in this instance, or at least the most value for the least money. Travel/room/board costs at least. You got his number?

I remember watching the trailer the last few times it's been on Pajiba. I liked it then, and I still like it now. I hope it does see eventual release.
