3-D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy Trailer: That 3D Porn Movie Isn't Really All that Porn-y

A lot has been made of 3-D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy , largely because it had the biggest opening day Hong Kong history (besting Avatar) and because, well, it’s a 3-D porn film.

It turns out, however, that’s it’s along the lines of soft-porn, and there’s more going on in the film than sex. Sex and Zen is an adaptation of the classical novel The Carnal Prayer Mat, which depicts the sexual exploits of a young Ming Dynasty scholar named Wei Yangsheng. A classic novel!?

The reviews haven’t been half-bad, either, such as the one from CNNGo: “I walked out of the first private screening of the softcore 3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy never wanting to have sex again, not because the sex scenes were gross… but because its message of ‘true love doesn’t need sex’ was so convincing.” An Austrialian critic, on the other hand, thought the “multi-dimensional rape and dismemberment scenes” took a little away from the titillating fun.

Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstacy opens in the UK this September. I expect it’ll open in the United States in never. Here’s the trailer, which highlights the knife-play over the … other kinds of play.

I’m not sure if this movie counts as a 3D porn film, so we may have to wait until Caligula director Tinto Brass to fully break the seal on that one.

So, there's rape and dismemberment scenes and some idiot got, "true love doesn’t need sex" out of that.

"True love doesn't need sex but it odes need a white panel van, some large trash bags, some rope and a few gallons of bleach."

I know, right? That's exactly the first thing that popped into my head after I read the article and watched the trailer but didn't see the movie. How could someone possibly get that out of a film I know next to nothing about?

Also, any time there is rape in a movie that is all I remember. That is all that comes to mind when I hear Thelma & Louise.

Paultera,
Sorry if I didn't pick up on sarcasm in your first sentence. I've been in the fucking Polanski thread all day.

pissant,
Yeah, I just went through the comments on that one. I can totally see how that thread would stir a reaction to my comment.

I thought 3D Sex & Zen already opened in the US; I could swear I saw a NY Times review of it. Yes, they did, on August 22nd, review states "opened Friday in Manhattan." Anyway, the DVD and 3D Blu-Ray are out in HK and rips are easily found in the usual places.

The Hong Kong film market is quite prudish. Films that score a Category III rating (HK's equivalent to the X or NC-17) are soft core all the way. There are no hard core productions here, at least none that play in movie theaters.

It's probably also worth noting that even for soft core films such as these, they have to get most of the actresses from Japan - very few HK actresses are even willing to pose topless.
