3-D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy Trailer: That 3D Porn Movie Isn't Really All that Porn-y

A lot has been made of 3-D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy , largely because it had the biggest opening day Hong Kong history (besting Avatar) and because, well, it's a 3-D porn film.

It turns out, however, that's it's along the lines of soft-porn, and there's more going on in the film than sex. Sex and Zen is an adaptation of the classical novel The Carnal Prayer Mat, which depicts the sexual exploits of a young Ming Dynasty scholar named Wei Yangsheng. A classic novel!?

The reviews haven't been half-bad, either, such as the one from CNNGo: "I walked out of the first private screening of the softcore 3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy never wanting to have sex again, not because the sex scenes were gross... but because its message of 'true love doesn't need sex' was so convincing." An Austrialian critic, on the other hand, thought the "multi-dimensional rape and dismemberment scenes" took a little away from the titillating fun.

Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstacy opens in the UK this September. I expect it'll open in the United States in never. Here's the trailer, which highlights the knife-play over the ... other kinds of play.

I'm not sure if this movie counts as a 3D porn film, so we may have to wait until Caligula director Tinto Brass to fully break the seal on that one.
