Just How Deep Do You Believe? Will You Bite The Hand That Feeds?

Ow.

That’s really all I can think of whenever I imagine the story of Aron Ralston, the canyon explorer who was forced to amputate his own arm when it became trapped under a boulder in 2003. I mean — fuck. The story was bound to become a movie, and Danny Boyle picked it up and ran with it. James Franco plays Alston, and while the trailer is a little too “extreme” for me at times, I loves me some Franco, and Boyle rarely steers us wrong.

Here’s the trailer. It’s got brief appearances by Kate Mara and Amber Tamblyn, but the movie is going to be all Franco. The trailer is a good teaser overall, I suppose, but it’ll be interesting to see how Boyle handles what will essentially be a one-man show. Anyway, check the trailer below.

Also? Ow.

His appearance on Letterman months after being trapped was inspiring. I won't link it because I'm too lazy, and what am I, your mom? Find it yourself!

Everyone says they would have done the same thing. I couldn't do it. I would have probably slit my wrists and just turned my head away and cried and bled out slowly. I wouldn't be able to cut my arm off. I know my level of pain and that's too high. Plus if you do it right, slitting your wrists a little isn't the worst way to go.

Aron Rolston was totally reckless and gave climbing/canyoning a bad rap. Yes, its amazing he could cut off his own arm to save himself. What is not inspiring is how stupid he was to end up in that position and the bad reputation responsible climbers have to deal with because of it. Also, several areas open to climbing were shut down after his irresponsible actions.

Oh my Godtopus! This is the second time (from where I've counted, so I might be wrong) a writer on this blog quotes a Nine Inch Nails song (this obsession is taking over my life, somebody, please stop me)
As for the movie, although I loves me some Franco too, I don't think I'll be able to watch this film. Even if it's 127 of mister James Franco. Amputation isn't as fun as it is on a video game or a drama series. We're talking about JF here!

Can't wait to see this. Loved "Into the Void" and hope this is just as effective at reminding me why I always choose to stay home when Mr. PaddyDog heads off on his climbs. The guy was hugely irresponsible but that should only add to the movie if done properly.

Posted by: PaddyDog at August 25, 2010 11:47 AM

Nope, won't be seeing this. Reading the newsstory was bad enough.

I have to completely agree with j. (Oh, and didn't I come on to you about a year ago? Kay and j? How cute that would be? No? Then, helllloooo.)

Yeah, I have a hard time feeling anything but "what a dumbass" about Aron. I get what he did to survive took elephant balls but it was completely selfish to get in that predicament in the first place. If I were his mom I'd be furious right after I knew he was going to be OK. Like smack him in the head, "What the fuck were you thinking!?" "Do that shit again and I'll kill you myself," kind of mad.

Shortly after I heard about this I decided that every time I left my house I'd be coming back with all my limbs or not at all. I can't imagine what it would take to cut off your own arm, but eff that ess.

A leg I could stand to lose. As long as it was below the knee I could get one of those bitchin' blades and run around like a Cheetah. I wouldn't want to live without both arms.

It's like Castaway. Under a Rock.

Its like an oscar-gunning version of saw???

Holy bajezus. Ow. OW.

I don't know if I could sit through that film. I want to, but I don't know if I could make it. It looks like there will be a lot of beautiful shots of very large heights, which already spikes my anxiety just from the trailer. And then the claustrophobic aspect and the perceived pain: ow.

I can't. I can't bring myself to pay even the low matinee price for a film that might cause me to have an anxiety attack.

I guess the newest season of I Shouldn't Be Alive! wasn't interested...

Posted by: Dangerous Dave at August 25, 2010 5:18 PM

Psh. Forget cutting off a limb for survival. I'd willingly cut off my own arm for Danny Boyle.

But I'm iffy on James Franco. I mean, I really want to like him, but for some reason, I can't. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I was hoping for another Boyle-Murphy juncture.

Can't see how this would make an interesting film.

Yaaaaaay! I, too, appreciate references to NIN.

Dumbass.

Posted by: SeeRed at August 25, 2010 6:53 PM

No offense but white people are the only ones that wind up in some shit that involves losing a limb. You sons of bitches love going mountain climbing or white water rafting or chasing tornados or some other shit that if you make one false move you’re dead. I have no sympathy for this fucker that had to cut his arm off, hopefully next time he‘ll stay his ass home. I haven’t seen a motherfucker yet that has kicked the great outdoor’s ass.

This trailer is absolutely gorgeous. But I definitely couldn't do it. I'd be too curious about the special effects they use to do this. Like when I'm watching violence stuff and wondering just how much is real.

Posted by: grace b at August 25, 2010 7:56 PM

sigh. james franco...

Posted by: splinter at August 25, 2010 8:15 PM

That trailer reminds me of classic Boyle, ala Trainspotting. I was kind of weary about this film before, but the trailer totally convinced me to see it.

Posted by: Paris at August 25, 2010 9:32 PM

If the arm cutting off scene is anything like the hand cutting off scene in Shallow Grave I won't be able to stand it. The noise of the saw cutting through bone....aieeee!

Posted by: Dora at August 26, 2010 7:07 AM

I've read the book and most of the story is flashbacks of his many harrowing adventures before his predicament. So I would guess that the movie will be more exciting than watching some guy sitting around for six days.

P.S.
It does make you appreciate being alive after reading something like that.

hmm. well kay ima chick and have never posted here before, probably a different j.
