You're Telling Me "The Tick" Got Canceled But We're Getting This?

Wow, SyFy is really making some interesting choices. According to Dark Horizons (via THR), the SyFy network has ordered a pilot based on the DC Comics character, Booster Gold. The silver lining in this incredibly dull news is that the pilot’s being written and produced by Andrew Kreisberg, who is one the writers for “Fringe.”

Booster Gold, for those who don’t know, is a fellow from the future who travels to the present day with a high-tech suit to try to become a hero. He’s a self-centered jackass who’s in it for the fame and fortune, but of course eventually learns his Very Important Lessons about being a hero.

Interestingly, Booster Gold is an ally and friend of the Blue Beetle, who SyFy also once tried to bring to life. For a taste of what that would have been like, here’s the test footage from their “Blue Beetle” TV show that never was:

Interestingly, the characters have shared the screen before, during the final season of “Smallville.” It was about as ridiculous as you’d expect. There’s a youtube clip, but it’s not embeddable. Click here if you’re got some free time and no self respect.

I do have some free time, but I also have a modicum of self respect, so I'll take your word as to the quality of that Booster Gold/Blue Beetle twofer.

I'd like to take this opportunity to share one of my favourite lines ever, from The Tick live action premiere:

"Armless bandit... Empty your bladder of that bitter black urine men call coffee! It has its price and its price has been paid! Java devil, you are now my bitch."

Booster Gold and Blue Beetle are great together if the writing is good. They're both silly, lighthearted characters.

BUT WHAT ABOUT SKEETS?!?!

Booster is the man.

Hey now, comic book Booster Gold is pretty awesome, especially teamed up with Blue Beetle. Yes, they're ridiculous, but they're also hilarious and adorable and hold a special place in my heart, okay? That test footage is pretty atrocious, though. Let's hope they don't do anything like that.

Is it just me or does the Blue Beetle's suit look like it is perpetually pinching his nipples?

Booster Gold is usually #3 on my list of characters I use to fuck with my friends by making up "guess who's getting their own movie?" news. Right behind Cannonball and Jubilee. So, this is probably my fault somehow.

First things first: Get Billy West to voice his robot companion, like I believe he did for Justice League.

As long as that happens, I would totally give this a shot. I know. It's SyFy. They'll probably screw it up. But the one they do pretty consistently is campy. Campy is exactly what this should be, so there's like a 10% chance they pull this off. That's about 10% more than I'd give most other channels.

I loved The Tick. My favorite line from the first episode? The Tick, after shoving an entire fortune cookie in his mouth and then discovering the paper fortune in his mouth. "A secret message from my teeth..."

If this has good writers it could work, though I'd personally prefer it the other way around - Ted Kord's Blue Beetle with Booster as a guest star. These two were a hoot in the late 80's JLI books.

Starting with 52, Booster became one of the best characters in the DCU. I've been a fan of the character since the 80s, and I was more than happy to see him evolve the way he did. If written correctly, the show could be something great. But hell, if they go with a JLI-era Blue And Gold characterization, it'll also be great!

Wow. How lame have comics gotten in the past few years?!? That header pic looks like the kind of crap comic from the dentist's office ... Captain Dento and Blue Listerine fight the flying spirochete army.
