Your Sunday Afternoon Break-the-Boredom Unconfirmed Rumor

Listen people, it’s Sunday and it’s Father’s Day and I’ve got nothing! Well, I did find this very interesting rumor that could be really cool if it turns out to be true.

The One Ring.net is reporting and analyzing a rumor that they received via spy report (movie spies - who knew?) indicating that Neill Blomkamp (District 9) may be replacing Guillermo del Toro as “The Hobbit” director. Speculation is that because the studio really wants Peter Jackson to direct (but Peter Jackson doesn’t want to direct), Blomkamp mentored by Jackson is the next best thing. Clearly, the film is moving forward, as there have been pictures of sets popping up all over the interwebs.

Though I’m pretty sure I read an interview with Blomkamp, shortly after the District 9 release, saying he wanted to stay low budget and independent for a while, I’d love to see this rumor be true. What say you all?

And now, back to your regularly scheduled Father’s Day Sunday schedule.

Am I the only person who thinks the Hobbit is one of the most boring books ever written?

No, I agree completely. Twilight was more amusing but for obviously different reasons.

Blomkamp directing a movie made by MGM which is a studio that can't get a single film financially backed, including it's tent pole series? Yeah, I believe that.

Depends. The Hobbit is a very good children's book. It's not suited that well for grown-ups.

FOOKING PRAWNS in Middle Earth? I'm in.

Blomkamp has the special effects background to deliver good visuals and District 9 was a really good movie.

That said, I wonder if he's not setting himself up for failure. This production doesn't appear to get any easier and anything less than perfect will mean the geeks moaning how the Del Toro version would have been much better.

No, you're not alone, Amanda. How adults read/watch this fuzzy little gnome crap is beyond me.

Here's ONE of the problems with this: It should have been filmed RIGHT after production on The Return of the King ceased. By this point the public has moved on from Middle Earth. Not only did they get 9 hours plus of theater time, they spent on multiple Box-sets followed by getting reamed AGAIN by a Blu-Ray release. The target audience is saturated at this point.
