Yet Another Thor Trailer Shows New Goodies, And The Avengers Villain Revealed

I admit it, I’m excited for this week’s release of Thor, although I partly feel that way because that means that the film’s relentless marketing campaign will finally come to a close. But with that said, there’s a new trailer for your enjoyment, and it actually shows a good deal of nifty new footage — notable of Jaimie Alexander’s Sif, Idris Elba’s Heimdall, and even a bit of Hogun (Tadanobu Asano). It’s got some solid new action as well.

Check it:

More interestingly is that we have sort-of confirmation of who at least one of the villains will be in Joss Whedon’s upcoming, massive superhero extravaganza The Avengers. Filming commenced last week in New Mexico, and Tom Hiddleston will apparently be reprising the role of Loki as the villain. Or maybe one of the villains. Who the hell knows. But at least we know: Loki is going to stir up some shit for the Avengers, and I’m cool with that.

Jaimie Alexander is stunningly beautiful and really kicks ass here. I really hope Sif gets a bigger role in the sequel. We can really use a solid female super hero. Especially since Wonder Woman looks like it's going to be pathetic

Fitting that Loki should be the first villain, since he's the first villain in Avengers #1 - him tricking the Hulk into busting shit up is the reason the Avengers originally assemble.

Thor's been out here in Belgium for a couple of days now -- I saw it on Saturday. Anyone interested in The Avengers is gonna want to stick around for the short scene following the credits... :)

How did we get this before you lot? I'm always surprised when that happens. I'll be interested to read the review when it goes up, I wasn't all that enamoured. But yes, as usual, stick around for the after the credits scene. It's not mega exciting, but it's there.

I bet a really dedicated nerd could piece together the entire movie at this point using all the ridiculous amount of footage that's come out for this.

I just want more shirtlessness. So I think I'll break my No Theater rule for the first time this year. Just for Thor.

And here I was, wondering why the hell there was no review for this yet - cause it's not released.
That's weird, considering I just saw it today. Usually, Germany gets the last possible release date..

Wait, the *rest of the world* got Thor before the US? (checks outside for avian pigs)

We saw it two weeks ago...

i yet saw it because i live in France and it's not a good movie("Flash Gordon" design, too many characters underdevelopped)but it's really funny and the bad guy is interesting at the end
the worst is Nathalie Portman 's character, she's an idiot and her lack of alchemy with Thor guy(who is charismatic)

I just want more shirtlessness

There was only one scene that I can remember, and it must have been in a trailer at some point. He's wearing uber tight jeans and looks amazing. Most of the time he's in his stupid caped outfit.

Having watched that trailer (which is basically the entire film) it does indeed feature the shirtless bit. Just watch that over and over and save yourself the ticket price.

i keep looking at the trailers with the expectation to get excited about this movie but....nothing.

Just got in from it. I liked it, surprisingly.

I've never liked Thor. The closest I've come to enjoying him was his Ultimates incarnation where much of it hinged on his refusal to join a US-initiated super-powered task force for political reasons. And of course how, realistically, everyone thought he was batshit insane for believing he's the god of thunder. As a comics character there's not really a struggle for him once his father accepts he sees his place as among the humans. That said the movie's pretty damn good specifically because it brings a much more human quality to the story although the fantastic characters actually seemed much more godlike. And because unlike Iron Man 2 the presence of SHIELD felt much more natural to the story.

There's a bunch of gnawing plotholes that really took me out, but I was constantly surprised by the movie, not in twists mind you. Despite dealing with gods basically, once that was established they didn't constantly strive for that 'epic' feel and let the camera work around the actors work some magic.

Seeing it unfold it suddenly made a whole lot more sense to see Branagh in the director's chair because thankfully it focused on character dynamics. I can only think of four real fighting sequences. And I gotta say I loved those because they didn't have beautifully choreographed sparring that's edited into sensual distortion but rough and palpable bouts that aim to kill. The overall design was a potential dealbreaker for me, but I gotta say they handled the merger of a world between science and magic pretty well and there were only a few times where it looked like the Power Rangers had a Lord of the Rings edition.

The actors were pretty spot-on. I mean, I didn't give a shit about casting because I had no stake and no real connection to the source material, but despite all the his imposing frame there was a truthful noblesse and grace in the way Chris Hemsworth carried himself. Especially in comparison to the fight scenes where he's all blunt force and will. Tom Hiddleston is a charming actor and he actually managed to bring some much needed heart to the main villain role. His Loki is fucking scene-stealing. God damn he brought some chops to the table. It's not an obviously great turn like RDJ as Iron Man or Ledger as Joker, but his split from tormented "other son" to scheming madman was delicious. And how much he conveys with his facial movement is beyond me. The central conflict here is between two brothers and that constantly drove the character's actions. That should be implicit in screenwriting but it's what makes some movies feel weak and things like Thor suddenly work for me.

I don't mean to sound as glowing as I feel I might be, it's not much more to me than a decent movie. But it shows how a well-prepared acting and a neatly structured script, along with strong direction really makes stories work.

Seriously enjoyable and I'll be along for a sequel.

Popcorn - Thanks for a strong and spoiler-free review.

I'm still amazed that Mrs. Lantern wants to see this. She WANTS to see "Thor". So, we're talking about going to the first Sunday showing...when nooone else will be there (shh!).

As superhero-y as I am (and I AM), I've never really gotten INTO Thor. Oh I know about Don Blake and the walking stick and "If He Be Worthy, Shall Possess The Power Of Thor" and all that...he just never struck me as an effective superhero.

Still, this looks like a good time and leads straight in to The Avengers (after Captain America, after X-Men First Class, I know)...plus I get to bring a smile to my wife's face and take her out to have fun. Seein' nothing but plusses here, folks.

There's one thing none of the trailers have told me and this is important:

Beta Ray Bill - Yes or No?

For me, this is a make or break question. That alone bridges the gap between going to see it opening night or waiting for the DVD release and watching it with friends (one of whom I know will buy it).

But I am admittedly an enormous geek.

Posted by: Wintermute at May 2, 2011 10:11 PM

Ooh, and in the sequel can they do the storyline where he was transformed into a frog?

I remember reading that one when I was sick as a kid and it was hilarious. I would line up for THAT nostalgia-fest.

thank you, popcorn!

Uggghhhhh I so want to see this, but as the above trailer says, Japan doesn't get it until July. Utterly unfair.
