Yeah, That 'Maleficent' Trailer With the Haunting Lana Del Ray Song Is Exquisitely Chilling

We’ve been burned so many times by these gothic fairy-tale re-imaginings that it’s been difficult to work up much enthusiasm for the re-imagining of Sleeping Beauty, centered around the villain, Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent. The fact that it’s already undergone reshoots and that it’s likely a PG-rated film puts even more damper on the film, set for release on May 30th.

On the other hand, this trailer featuring Lana Del Rey’s haunting “Once Upon a Dream,” changes everything. I can only hope the film itself has a similar tone. Of course, the most terrifying thing about the trailer is Jolie’s bone structure: She could kiss you on the cheek and rip a gash in your face with her cheekbones.

  • BlackRabbit

For some reason, the king always looks like he has a tiny head in these trailers.

  • Maddy

Angelina was born to play Maleficent, I don't even care if the actual movie sucks she looks like she's having fun

  • Good God, that petrifying SMILE...
I am going to have to watch this movie, whether it's shitty or great, just to look at Jolie. Goot Gott.

  • MissAmynae

I can already tell you I'll buy the soundtrack. The film--eh. I'll take my little sister for her birthday- she worships Maleficent. Made her own paper-mache (sp?) horns when she was 5.

  • Yeaaaah, it's gonna be crap. It's Disney. It's cheesy-looking, sugary-sweet Disney with a villain too good for its own movie.

  • Sara_Tonin00

I may be alone in this...but I'd actually like a little less of Jolie smiling. Maybe I'm remembering wrong, but Maleficent in the Disney original was so humorless - she said things that were ostensibly funny or teasing without cracking a smile, and that's one of the creepiest things about her to me. Aside from trying to match the original, I feel like the smiling, charming villain is overplayed - Maleficent to me is compelling and hypnotic, but she is not charming.

  • Tinkerville

Absolutely. Maleficent is my favorite Disney villain of all time because she was just pure terror all the time. I'm a little worried about how they're going to play her here.

  • AMBLEMORN

Dammit. I cannot be lured by Jolie or Disney, and yet... somehow they got me.

  • Aaron Schulz

I find it pretty impressive they managed to really make her look like maleficient. Shes always been one of my favorite villains and regardless of the quality of the movie, she looks the part.

  • Quatermain

I don't know how good the movie is going to be, but that's a hell of a trailer.

  • MarTeaNi

One person's "haunting" is another person's "hack and dull." Without the imagery this cover is boring. A flat voice with generic creepy music over dark imagery? I think that's page 46 of "how to make your trailer creepy when all your other trailers looked kinda stupid."

  • Ryan Ambrose

Not gonna mince words, one of my earliest memories as a child that induced me to nightmares was Maleficent's spine-chilling entrance as she slowly revealed herself through fireplace in the original Sleeping Beauty.

It felt more like a terrifying scene from a John Carpenter horror film than from a kid's movie. And it was great. Now I'm looking forward to this, blame it on the haunting song.

  • AMBLEMORN

I'm with you. My "childhood" Disney movie (and soundtrack, on vinyl because: age)--the one I saw over and over and think of as the Platonic "Disney reel" was SB. Not Bambi, not Fantasia, not Snow White... so now I HAFTA see this.

  • The movie may be a mess but I have complete faith that Jolie is going to be great in it. This trailer is great, if the movie can keep the same tone it will be excellent. But I'm sure it's going to drop the ball and give us a plethora of CG monsters and call it a day.

  • Brian Merritt

I listened to the Lana's track by itself, and it's not nearly as unsettling as they make it sound in this trailer. I guess the sound engineers for the trailer knew that adding some well placed dissonance would definitely boost the haunt factor. They were correct. The actual track reminds me a bit of Edward Sissorhands.

MORONS! I am a spinner and I know what spinning wheels look like and how they work. I have 4 of them. THAT IS NOT THE CORRECT TYPE OF SPINNING WHEEL! AND, THAT IS NOT WHERE THE POINTY SPINDLE GOES.

    MORONS!

Firstly, there are two types of spinning wheels. The newer version (as sketched by Leonardo Di Vinci) has a flyer and NO pointy spindle. The spinning wheel in the trailer clearly has a flyer. THere is no place to prick your finger on this type of wheel.

    http://www.pacificwoolandfiber...

The older type of spinning wheel can be something like a book charkha, like Ghandi used, or a great wheel, which basically is one huge wheel and attached to a small whorl with a spike that comes out sideways. This is the type of wheel that was most likely used in the original story.

    http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEw11...

The MORONS, have put a spike on top of the distaff that holds the flax before you spin it. You don't put a spike there. There's no reason for it. See that basket looking thing pointing up? The morons put a spike on top of it. MORONS, I TELL YOU!

    http://www.applehollow.com/ima...

Just because they got it wrong in the cartoon, doesn't mean they couldn't correct it in the new movie.

    http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kjLm...
I couldn't find the photo from the trailer which shows the wheel from the other angle, where it is clear that the spike is pointing up and not parallel to the ground. Plus, the shape is clearly a bat style distaff and not a whorl (which would be the bit the drive band would go around. Plus, you can see the top of the flyer between the wheel and the distaff.

    OK, rant over.

  • TheOriginalMRod

Everytime I see the word "pointy" I can help but think: "Pointy Birds.' O pointy birds, o pointy pointy, anoint my head, anointy-nointy."

  • Finance_Nerd

I feel this way about action movies. I was in the US Army infantry for four years and it irritates the hell out of me how they get so many things wrong. The worst are grenade explosions. In the movies they are these huge fireballs that you can jump away from (what you're seeing are gasoline explosions). Don't do a flying leap, get behind cover... or else you'll just end up w/a ton of shrapnel in your legs and ass. In reality, grenade explosions are just loud w/grey and black smoke (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v....

Thanks! I needed a Monday morning rant. And with pictures too!

I just fell in fiber nerd love with you.

My exact thought as I was reading this: "I'm falling in love with BWeaves so hard right now."

  • BWeaves

    Thank you.

  • Pippa_Laughingstock

If she doesn't turn into a dragon, I DON'T CARE.

  • Mrs. Julien

I was hoping for a glimpse of dragon transformation in the trailer.

  • ZizoAH

I just can't help it, I always say "this is the last time...", but I always fall for this kind of shit.

I'll probably be there, opening day.

  • emmalita

Me too, but I won't go opening day.

  • Dove of Doom

Snow White and the Huntsman 2 looks amazing!

  • Alicia

Are we sure this isn't Wicked 2?

  • WestCoastPat

Have we learned nothing from years of Zach Snyder trailers? Between the earlier, scene-heavy trailers, and a highly thematic one heavily reliant on music, I'm inclined to believe that the earlier ones are more indicative of the actual film. As such, I remain highly skeptical of the entire endeavor.

  • firedmyass

I was vigorously indifferent to this movie until now. Good lord, Jolie is absolutely mesmerizing.

  • AMBLEMORN

    Everything you said.

  • Mrs. Julien

I need more clothing that billows around me as I walk. You know it would twirl like a mofo, too.
