Women Accusing Terry Richardson of Sexual Harassment Are "Stupid Bitches," Says Model Who Doesn't Understand Definition of Sexual Harassment

I couldn't resist this story, via Jezebel, about a Maybelline model, Charlotte Free, who asserted on her now deleted tumblr post that only "stupid bitches" would accuses Terry Richardson -- the skeevy photographer of the stars -- of sexual harassment. Apparently, Richardson has been accused of sexual harassment in the past (in particular, by former model, Jamie Peck), and Free thinks that's just silly.

"i love terry's raw sexuality, it's one of the things i really admire about him. Terry likes to do sexy stuff, that's his shit. If you don't wanna be part of it, make it clear in the beginning. Don't willingly blow the man and get all mad and ashamed later...I hate when girls say 'but he asked me to.' you should have said no then, stupid bitch! there's plenty of other girls waiting in line, so he's not forcing you to do shit. When you make a choice you have to live with it -- unless someone got you fucked up against your will. Thats how I feel about it.

I cannot even begin to unpack and process the stupidity in that statement. Basically, what Free has done here is to DEFINE SEXUAL HARASSMENT. If the "stupid bitch" doesn't want to blow Richardson, THAT'S FINE. It just means that he will move on to the next woman in line who WILL blow him. She has basically proven the case.

But then again, it's not like Richardson is holding a gun to your head or forcing a knife down your throat.

Oh wait ...

    Shocker.

  • Slash

Also, is the model saying that she sucked Richardson's dick to get jobs working with him? Has that been established?

I'm guessing that's why she attempted a half-assed backpedal. She's not sorry for saying that women who complain about it are bitches. What she's sorry for is inadvertently confirming that in order to work with Terry Richardson, you have to suck his dick first. I'm guessing she won't be working with Richardson again anytime soon.

  • ,

I'm confused. Why wouldn't he still want to work with her if she sucks? Seems like a perfect match: She sucks, he sucks ...

Anyway, granting that Richardson may be a vile scumbag, I wonder how much of the vitriol aimed at him is of the "He gets paid reams of money and gets laid by models for taking bad pictures with a disposable camera, like my MiL? This is considered cutting-edge and 'genius'? GodDAMN, I could do THAT. Why didn't I think of it? That bastard" variety.

  • Slash

He wouldn't want to work with her (unless he's a goddam idiot) because a) what she said is true, in which case he's violated a number of laws and she will be asked to give a deposition against him in some sort of lawsuit or b) what she's saying is not true (or isn't provable) in which case she's libeled him.

I continue to be amused that there are adults (granted, she's not much of an adult, but still) who don't know what libel is and think that their insightful musings on the intertubes aren't subject to libel laws. Pretty soon, we'll probably get a carefully worded statement from her or her lawyer making it clear that any suggestion that Mr. Richardson requires sexual favors in order to work with him were in error and she is truly sorry that she gave anybody that impression. Of course, her initial statement is still floating around out there to be used as some sort of evidence against her (and him).

Maybe he doesn't care either way right now. But it will be interesting to see if somebody else makes him care.

  • pawlit

What sort of laws were violated if what she's saying is true?

Is it really illegal in his line of work to demand sex in those kids of situations?

I'm asking cause I'm ignorant about those things, not trying to be provocative. Maybe it really is illegal. But should it be, necessarily? Why should the mechanisms of free market fail in this instance?

  • God Of Bal-Sagoth

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that counts as sexual harassment. In fact, I'm positive. And sexual harassment is not kosher.

  • Slash

The thing about the fashion industry (really, not unlike most industries) is that it is very concerned about producing beauty and aesthetically pleasing images, but is not terribly concerned about how they get made. Kinda like sausage. All kinds of ugly shit has to happen to produce fashion. And the fashion powers that be are always resistant to acknowledging it. And they react the way most people do when forced to. They either make a half-assed effort at cleaning it up, or they vehemently deny it and attack the accusers. This dummy (the model in question) chose door #2. She probably thinks she's keepin' it real.

  • Slash

I'm sorry to say that this appears to be popular attitude among younger women. The idea that women who don't want to "express" their sexuality (even to the point of being coerced in some fashion) are uptight, man-hating prudes who want us all to go back to the 1950s.

To these people, there's no such thing as sexual harassment. And of course it dovetails conveniently with the desires of men who like it when women give their assholish behavior the A-OK sign. Hey, this chick over here doesn't have a problem with it, so what's the problem?

  • Theunis Stofberg

ok. As a lecturer in Fashion Photography (these jobs exist people, I promise you) I can tell you that Terry is and will be seen as one of the most important photographers post 2000. He eschewed the use of high tech, ultra powerfull, super expensive digital cameras and showed up to shoots with old film point-n-shoot cameras, sometimes even disposable cameras. His style and the way he posed the models therefore had to make up for the fact that his photos were not technically perfect. He took chances that few other photographers would have openly taken without a lynchmob descending on them and his style is widely copied (by that ass from the Eastwood & Co for instance)

Yes, there is a definitely a very strong au-de-douche coming of him but to be truthful most young fashion photographers sleep with their models. It is a deplorable practice that has been ok'd by the magazine and fashion industry since the 50's, sometimes model agencies will actually promote it as it is an inside track for a model to get more jobs. Where Terry has crossed the line is that he firstly, expects the models to do it (ye old casting couch, ever heard of it) but more importantly frequently photographs the whole little sordid thing.

Terry has with his photos made himself into a hipster-guru (though they prob dont know who he is), but with his blatant sexual harassment it is only time before his star fades and his close friends like Tom Ford cant rescue him anymore. I have known a lot of pervert photographers in my years and they all have received their comeuppance in the long run.

  • ZombieNurse

Every picture this man takes looks like what detectives find on the thumb drives of violent sex offenders.

  • It is sad and frightening when young girls think this kind of shit is ok.

  • Slash

This. It's just really fucking sad.

  • John W

I'm confused. Is Terry Richardson the only photographer on planet Earth? Is he the only choice for models who want to be photographed? If Terry Richardson doesn't take pictures of you is your career over? Do all magazines, GQ, Esquire, Maxim, Playboy, etc answer to him?

  • PaddyDog

Let's be honest here. Terry Richardson continues to be one of the most sought after fashion/celebrity photographers because people (we) buy the sadomasochistic soft porn that he produces. And I'll confess, until I saw that this was a whole thing and not just one-or-two risque shoots and then heard about the behind the scenes stuff, I also thought some of his shots were cool.

  • Amy

I don't know if all those magazines answer to him, but they definitely use him over and over again. Most of these models aren't like Gisele or something, they have no clout. If they refuse to work with someone they might never work again for being too "difficult".

  • kirivinokur

Terry Richardson...he's so hot right now. Terry.

    With Wintour's stamp of approval.

  • logan

Who? I mean I love a good lynch mob but I've never heard of the guy.

  • logan

Hey you cant vote me down for being ignorant! I'll hold the guy while you all hit him but I honestly dont know anything about him.

  • DeltaJuliet

Well, obviously, you aren't missing much.....

  • PaddyDog

Even top fashion industry insiders accept that Richardson is vile (see below a post from just last week). As for the model's comments, it's not an industry known for grey matter. The girls (and yes, I mean girls, not women) who have any intelligence tend to get out early.

  • Some Random Guy 123

She posted an ill advised comment that she probably realized was silly and then deleted. Let's crucify her!

  • Bert_McGurt

What she said is more than just "silly". It betrays, sadly, a very common attitude towards victims of sexual harassment or assault. That they are somehow responsible for what happened to them. That the harassment is acceptable because they were intimidated or taken advantage of by someone in a position of authority (and were scared to say/do anything to stop it). And worst of all, that recovery from such an incident is as simple as telling the victim to effectively "walk it off".

Sexual harassment and assault are extremely serious issues and are no place for flippant, "silly" or "ill-advised" comments anyways. And that's to say nothing of the apparent contempt she holds for professional conduct and ethics.

  • Maguita NYC

    LOVE. YOU.

  • God Of Bal-Sagoth

I'm sorry, but I have two pretty major issues with this comment:

    1) A comment that basically belittles victims of sexual harassment and engages in victim shaming while also defending a pretty routinely acknowledged scumbag is a far god damn cry from "ill-advised." Also, as kirivinokur noted, she pulled the comment but not the sentiment.

    2) Who's crucifying her? The article's author called her "stupid" and then a bunch of commenters talked about what an awful person Terry Richardson is... is that really all it takes to make a crucifixion comparison? Let's not pretend that everyone showed up at Charlotte Free's doorstep with torches and pitchforks. If anything, this has been a pretty rational discussion about the issue coupled with strongly reasoned condemnations of Richardson.

  • Some Random Guy 123

The headline should by '20 Year Old Makes Dumb Comment, Judged by Liberal Arts Majors Everywhere.'

Below the fold we get, "Lack of Sarcasm Awareness, Self Seriousness at All Time High!"

She made a poorly worded comment. She's just some 20 year old girl who's standing by that 'routinely acknowledged scumbag' (who she actually knows and has worked with) and considers a friend. But yeah victim shaming, rape culture, etc. The internet outrage machine is in full swing.

  • kirivinokur

I'm pretty sure I got your sarcasm and understood that you really weren't calling for her crucifixion. And it doesn't sound like you're really explaining why her post was ill-advised, or why you think she later thought it was stupid since she didn't take back what she meant.

So what part of your original post is correct?

  • God Of Bal-Sagoth

OK, let's try to work on your reading comprehension skills here: She made an offensive comment. Dustin called her stupid for failing to comprehend how sexual harassment works. And then NOTHING WAS SAID ABOUT HER AGAIN until you commented, which resulted in a response by two other people, myself included.

So there has actually been very little outrage towards the model who made the quote. There's been a great deal of ire towards Richardson, which is likely well-deserved.

But by all means, don't let reason, logic or facts get in the way of your own self-righteousness.

  • Some Random Guy 123

She seems to be getting a fair amount of scorn for an ignorant comment that she went ahead and deleted afterwards. Seems to me this is pretty much a non-story opportunity to vent about some fashion photographer the internet hates. Anyway, I'll see myself out.

  • God Of Bal-Sagoth

Wow, you really are determined to not actually understand or acknowledge any of the points being made. So sure, please do stop because I don't know how much clearer I can be without switching to finger paints and crayons.

  • kirivinokur

"Ill-advised" because we're assuming she didn't decide to write her words and post them on her own?

She deleted the post but wrote afterwards: "I don’t even believe the accusations against terry…. And if they are true, I still stand by what I said. I shouldn’t have used such offensive language...I’m sick of people making stuff up about him, and even if it was true, I still have Terry’s back no matter what."

  • Some Random Guy 123

No, 'ill advised' because the comments were dumb. She's 20, she is the guy's friend and coworker, and she said something insensitive. What a story...People must really hate this guy if some random model is getting this level of scorn.

  • Bert_McGurt

No, people hate it in general when women are sexually harassed and then shamed and belittled if they speak up. Terry Richardson is simply an example of a pretty f*cking common problem and she's getting "scorn" because she's an enabler.

  • kirivinokur

    That's not what ill-advised means.

  • Some Random Guy 123

Acting without reasonable care or thought. Glad we got pedantic.

  • kirivinokur

    Me, too!

  • pumpkin

Exactly. Her followup is actually worse than the original.

  • Amy

I hate Terry Richardson and am so so so SO glad none of my favorite people are BFFs with him (ahem John Krasinski and Will Arnett for examples)

  • And that is the strangest pose that anyone has ever done for a photograph uploaded onto Chris Hansen's Instagram.

  • Maguita NYC

Terry Richardson is a pig. We all know that. And I'm betting people in the industry know about disturbingly nastier details than we do.

This turd should have been arrested long ago, and no business should ever be employing or publishing his "talent" in any venue. Using his "genius" is beyond turning a blind eye on his "faults"; It is actually glorifying his predatory shitprick attitude, and encouraging him to go beyond in the name of his "art". That picture of Lindsay Lohan makes me so sad for her. For any woman indeed, who had ever had that look in her eyes.

  • Amy

There are many people you should feel sorry for. Lindsay Lohan is not one of them. The majority of her own problems are because she is a terrible human being, and it's no one else's fault.

  • Maguita NYC

Unfortunately, I cannot yet turn a blind eye on the despair in another woman's eyes, whose sickness in alcoholism and drug abuse have led her to such a situation.

  • BlackRabbit

While I agree with you, her issues had nothing to do with Mr. Richardson. His skeevy photos probably prejudiced some folks against him, and it's easy to accuse anyone of anything. Am I saying he's innocent? No, definitely not, especially after reading the stories on Jezebel. I'm just saying it's hard to be objective on a story like this.

  • Lucie

Yeah, I feel sorry for her. I think she needs serious help, but instead her troubles are paraded around for public entertainment. She's obviously made bad choices and has a huge substance abuse problem, but I think she needs to be hospitalized and out of the spotlight.

However, I don't think she "deserves" another chance at stardom. I think she needs to get out of this world and far, far away from her parents too.

  • PaddyDog

Yeah, I agree with Maguita. I have no time for Lohan, but she is so perfectly vulnerable to the exploitation that Richardson specializes in.

  • denesteak

UGH. I fucking hate Terry Richardson.
