Will the Girl in the Fireplace Be the Next Doctor Who Companion? Yes, Please

At the moment, it’s just speculation. But it’s awesome speculation based upon two very key tweets, one from “Doctor Who” showrunner Steven Moffat, and the other from Sopha Myles, who played the title character in one of the show’s best five episodes, “The Girl in the Fireplace.”

This, from Steven Moffat:

“Right EVERYBODY who follows me, go and follow @SophiaMyles - spin that fireplace. NOW.”

This, from the lovely Sophia Myles (who was also great in “Spooks”)L

“Watch this (fire)place. The plot thickens…”

What can we infer? At the very least, that the Doctor will have another run-in with Reinette, although it would mean that the Doctor would have to interrupt the timeline established by “A Girl in the Fireplace.” But with Karen Gillan leaving, I don’t think it’s a huge stretch to imagine that she’d become the new companion. She’d also be … perfect, except that it’d be weird seeing Matt Smith with her, after it was David Tennant who fell so hard for her. Alas, bygones. I’ll take Sophia Myles in any way we can get her.

So basically we're going to get more timey-wimey headache-y stuff from Moff if it does turn out to be Reinette?

...Well. If nothing else, it'll be a change from the 'modern-day human companion' Rose-shaped hole.

I, for one, would like to have seen Kylie Minogue get her own run at it as a long-term companion for the Doctor. One episode didn't really do her justice.

Posted by: hater from siloam springs at January 17, 2012 11:43 AM

But would the companion be Sophia Myles playing someone modern or would it be Reinette?

Posted by: PaddyDog at January 17, 2012 11:44 AM

I'm all for Myles showing up again, whether it's the same character or someone else. I watched that vampire show she was on a few times just to see her. She's freaking gorgeous.

I do like the idea of this if those tweets imply what I think they imply. Would Reinette recognize another form of the Doctor instantly? Who is to say that she doesn't interact with him in another form but doesn't recognize him? And doesn't she only see that space station attached to the fireplace, not the TARDIS? That wouldn't contradict the prior episode at all. She knows this whole other world exists beyond the stars. Why couldn't there be another strange and kind gentleman to take her exploring?

Or I could just be fanwanking it because I want to see that character again.

Maybe I'm being thick, but those tweets don't seem hinty to me. Maybe I just need a snack, brain go slow when hungy...

BARBADOSLIM APPROVED!

I SAID STFU!

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at January 17, 2012 11:53 AM

If I say 'nomnomnom' am I just debasing myself?

Posted by: Squirrel at January 17, 2012 11:54 AM

I'm watching you..

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at January 17, 2012 11:55 AM

Patty, I think Sophia's is more revealing. Why reference the fireplace and the plot thickening if that character wasn't coming back in some way? And why push people to follow Sophia's Twitter, a social network not available when her one and done episode of Doctor Who first aired, with a reference to the same episode?

Posted by: Robert at January 17, 2012 12:03 PM

As long as it isn't the totally unfunny Miranda Hart (which was hinted at before)

Posted by: Renton at January 17, 2012 12:04 PM

Moffat is the same man who said, "I lie repeatedly and continually. It's by far the best way of communicating."

Why do people keep forgetting rule number one?

Posted by: branded at January 17, 2012 12:07 PM

@ branded - "Never let suspects stay together"? How does this apply here?

Ha, just kidding..

Posted by: jmd at January 17, 2012 12:14 PM

She was cool. And those weird clockwork robots were cool. Cool cool cool.

Posted by: Lucas at January 17, 2012 12:18 PM

I'd love this if it turns out to be true, and I don't think it'd be that hard to write it into the continuity: just make it so that instead of actually dying, Reinette takes off with a later incarnation of the Doctor--causing 10 to miss her, cause she's with 11.

Posted by: Shawn at January 17, 2012 12:21 PM

Why would it mess with the time line? She wrote that note to him, but as far as I remember, it never specified that she never saw him again. Perhaps she did, as 11, and got to have a bunch of wonderful adventures before dying tragically and breaking 10's heart. This is sci-fi WITH time travel - anything can happen.

You forget, Eleven just got married to River Song, so no heavy petting with Madame du Pompadour no matter how much her bosoms heave in those Renaissance gowns.

I had to stop following Moffat after Sunday's Sherlock and his tweets. I'll just watch the shows from now on.

Posted by: Carrie/Teabelly at January 17, 2012 12:32 PM

Each new companion is ALWAYS played by someone who appeared in a previous episode. The only one who played the same character was Donna.

Martha/Freema was in "Army of Ghosts"
Donna/Katherine was in "The Runaway Bride"
Amy/Karen was in "The Fires of Pompeii"

I would assume the next companion would be someone who has appeared in a previous episode, though normally they are plucked out of the season before, not several seasons ago.
I'd also assume that if she really is going to be his companion, that she wouldn't be playing Reinette, because the companions are normally modern Londoners.

I've been waiting for Jenny/Georgia Moffett to show back up as a companion. That, I would love.

Though I'll take Eve Myles.

Oh, but him and Gatiss are too much fun!

("Teasing, Dissembling Bastards" could also be applied)

Posted by: Jay at January 17, 2012 12:47 PM

Also, they start shooting next month so it's possible she's in that filming block and would be spotted soon. We saw Alex Kingston on the beach in late summer 2009. Whatever they're plotting I think we'll know sooner than later (as opposed to what Who and Sherlock are actually up to in 2013).

Posted by: Jay at January 17, 2012 12:49 PM

I don't watch Doctor Who (please don't kill me!), but Sophia Myles is quite lovely. She needs more work.

Posted by: MM at January 17, 2012 1:15 PM

When people ask “How could the Doctor love Reinette when he already loved Rose?”, I just say “Have you ever met a man?” - Moffat

So I guess the presence of River wouldn't really matter to Moffat here either.

I'm still hoping for Sally Sparrow but, ahem, I think that bird has flown.

Seriously, if you cannot remember Sally Sparrow or who played her, do a quick google nad prepare to go "omgwtf".

Plus "Blink" was a great episode.

Posted by: honeychurch at January 17, 2012 3:19 PM

I agree with honeychurch, but Carey Mulligan does insist on being a movie star, so I guess Sophia Myles will have to do.

If Carey Mulligan would actually agree to be in Doctor Who again, wouldn't that mean more Larry too? I would love to have another companion couple. Larry was like the proto Rory, though, so maybe that's just my Rory love talking.

"The angels have the phone box" - that's my favorite, I have it on a T-shirt.

What does he mean by "look to your left"? I think it's a political statement.

OK. I'm done now.

Probably.

Posted by: Three-nineteen at January 17, 2012 5:13 PM

Holy fuck, that would be cool. I loved that episode so much...and that kiss between her and 10...whew. *fan*

Posted by: Candee at January 17, 2012 7:42 PM

I can get behind her.
