Which of these 13 Movies Would You Be Most Likely to Watch Based Only on the Movie Poster?

A crapload of movie posters were released yesterday, or at least were picked up by Collider here here here here here and here. I’m not particularly excited about any of the posters — they’re all kind of lousy — but why not: Let’s rank them in terms of which would compel us more to see the movie based only on the movie poster, from least compelling to the most.

The Arthur one has the Aardman name on it, but it also has the word "Christmas" on it, and 88% of Christmas movies are crap.

I want to take all these posters, plaster them on my naked body with turpentine and lye and set myself on fire. After that though, Man on a Ledge would probably be the least painful.

Based on the posters ALONE? Dawn Treader. Based on my experience of them over-schlocking the hail out of one of my favorite childhood reads? Man on a Ledge.

The Illusionist! Because I have a real weakness for quirky french movies. They're happy, they're colorful, and they make me feel good for understanding the French jokes.

Man on a Ledge wins for actual design.

But The Illusionist is the one I'd choose to see because the poster has actual information "From the makers of The Triplets of Belleville."

But I'm an information snob. Tell me something useful and I'm a happy camper.

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. All you need to see is Aslan's face and you know what movie it is and you know whether or not you're interested. Good stuff.

The last one. Because the poster told me it's directed by Sylvain Chomet, who made the Triplettes de Belleville. By the look of the lines in the drawing, it's going to feature the same elegant and fluid animation style. Or it could be a red herring. Going to look for a trailer now!

I will agree with #1 because of the "From the makers of The Triplets of Belleville."

The King's Speech gets a pass because of the cast (they're on the poster so that counts).

And #12 gets a pass because I can see that it says Aardman on there even though you have sneakily cut part of it off.

These days, anything in 3D is a dealbreaker. No thanks. Terrence Malick's always interesting - I and the other three people in the theater will be glad we went. On the poster alone, Man On A Ledge.

From the trusty IMDB synopsis, Man On a Ledge may be a little bit Phone Booth-y for my taste.
Also, it has Sam Worthington :(

Arthur Christmas, just for it's Wallace & Gromit vibe, Man on a Ledge and The Illusionists. The rest do absolutely nothing for me (except the tree one, which is so trealcy looking it make me heave a little).

Hybrid - because I am powerless against the temptation to watch so-bad-its-good scifi or horror movies. That poster looks like the sort of dvd case I pick up in the 5-for-$20 shelf at Blockbuster and buy it based on the cover alone.

I, uh... I've collected a number of Stephen Baldwin films this way, so this method is not without its risks.

That's a tough one. I want to say The Illusionist because I can just make out that it's another animated film by Sylvian Chomet, but The King's Speech has Helena Bonham-Carter in period-wear looking mischievous.

I can tell you I wouldn't want to watch The Voyage of the Dawn Treader based on that poster because Aslan shouldn't be the focus based on that book. They venture to try and find Aslan beyond the horizon, sure, but he's not the protagonist. Where is Reepicheep? Where? Is? REEPICHEEP?

Man on a Ledge and The Illusionist.

What's with the propensity to include bad lines on some of these posters? "Every father wants more for his son"? Malick's poster gets killed with "Nothing stands still".

Although I think I'd go see the Keanu movie. Because I'm not close enough to actually hug him. And because this looks like the beginning of his direct-to-DVD phase before he up and moves to Hawaiian obscurity.

Man on a Ledge is a nice design. Hopefully Dawn Treader will get a more interesting poster because not every damn Narnia poster has to feature Aslan prominently. Especially when you have a bad ass ship in your movie that fans of the books (like me) have been waiting quite a while to see realized.

Based on the posters, none of the above.

But, I'm interested in seeing The Voyage of the Dawn Treader because the book is actually kind of trippy. Among the voyagers' encounters are a corrupt remnant of the former Narnian empire, an island of dreams, an exiled wizard with a secret past, a reluctant dragon, and a mouse-keteer with an over-developed sense of chivalry.

Dawn Treader is kind of like Gulliver's Travels with a dusting of Through the Looking Glass. What's not to love.

I'm just now realizing that each of the books in The Chronicles of Narnia is a different kind of fantasy story. The collection is almost a syllabus. There's the children's accidental adventure in Faerie. There's the travelogue of rediscovery. There's the outcast with the big destiny coming of age. There's the corruption from inside / enchanted leader. There's the mystical, almost gnostic meditation across worlds. There's the end of the world, of course.

I never noticed that before now. I am so dum. D-U-M, dum.

I thought they were giving up on the Narnia movies? They've sucked pretty hard so far. The poster is dull; I don't remember a lot of snow in Dawn Treader, which was my favorite. I'm with Robert--Reepicheep kicks ass.

Cold Light of Day--wow, a lot of work went into that one. The choice of font, color...it's mindblowing.

Anything with 3D gets an automatic pass no matter how awesome the poster.

Like others have said, Man on a Ledge for the design work, and that coupled with the image gives me hope for something tense but meditative, like Falling Down, hopefully sans Michael Douglas' unsubtle performance.

Considering that most of these will probably be direct-to-DVD (or, close to it), I still don't even think I'd waste a spot on my Netflix queue for any of them. Based only on the movie posters, of course.

Although, I've seen the trailer for The Kings Speech and I'm already in love it...but if I hadn't seen the trailer and was basing it solely on the poster it would be a huge PASS.

The Man On A Ledge poster is the only one I find even vaguely compelling in terms of visual design. Generation Um, The King's Speech, Cold Light Of Day, Step Up 4Ever 3D, and A Warrior's Heart are particularly uninspired/horrid.

Thank goodness I use reviews, writers, and directors to decide what I'll actually see. It sure would be cool to see a modern renaissance in the art of creative movie posters, though.

Also: agree with Robert. Any Dawn Treader poster demands Sir Reepicheep, the best element of all of Narnia (although I don't know if the movie will do him justice).

Man On A Ledge is a hell of an awesome poster. I have no clue what it's really supposed to be about, though.

The only movies on this list that I will probably be seeing are Hybrid and The Illusionist (but then only because I loved Triplets of Belleville). I would possibly see The Cold Light of Day, if it's some sort of bad sci-fi movie, but it's impossible to tell from the poster.

#12 looks like the Cousin of the Guy From Ratatouille.

But Man on a Ledge is the only good one there. All the others are cheesy as hell. Based solely on the art, though. Didn't even look at the tiny, tiny words...
