Be My Queen If You Know What I Mean and Let Us Do the Wild Thing

Here’s your morning cupful of caffeinated whimsy — four character posters from the forthcoming Spike Jonze adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are. Dig the posters, although I’m not so sure I like the idea of the Wild Things having names. Plus, I’m trying here to temper my enthusiasm just a scotch, so I don’t trigger early backlash. Apparently, some of you find it alienating when I go gay for a movie. So, I’m going to leave it at this:

gp!!! That made ME gasp. :)

Gorgeous posters. I have such clit wood for this movie, I don't care how many posts there are about it.

Posted by: Julie at September 11, 2009 10:41 AM

In the book it makes perfect sense for them not to have names. But in a film that isn't 100% narration, where characters are going to need to address each other, having names is going to make that whole process much less awkward.

Posted by: vercordio at September 11, 2009 10:41 AM

agugh.gggggggg. It's better than coffee.
I'm not sure I like the idea of the wild things having only female names. Or, what gender is KW?
But I would go gay for these things anytime, although I'm sure that's not what Dustin meant. You know, not fanatically, just a bit deep closet case of Narnia-gay.

Posted by: The Gemeinderat at September 11, 2009 10:44 AM

I want to bring them all to my backyard for a party.

Posted by: Cindy at September 11, 2009 10:44 AM

Is it just me or does anyone else see Alanis Morissette when they look at KW?

Posted by: Spender at September 11, 2009 10:45 AM

Narnia-gay is the way to go. I mean, have you seen those centaurs? Hot damn, rawr. I love me a horse-man (with a horse-cock to go along) and some strong equine facial features.

And don't even get me started on those minotaurs! They can gore me any day (up my butt).

Posted by: Snath at September 11, 2009 10:47 AM

Spender, I see it, too. Well, now I do. And now I can't unsee it.

This movie is so exciting that it turns me into an infant. Not even a kid. I am a bouncing, kicking, clapping, cooing Man-Baby for this movie. Ooops, just peed myself. Gotta go.

Posted by: The Wandering Parakeet at September 11, 2009 10:49 AM

Anyone else a little thrown off by the last pic? The one with the human boy in it? I mean, it's like -female name-... -furry face-... -female name-... -furry face-... MAX!

Cue Sesame Street music: One of these things is not like the others...

And I totally cannot wait to see this one. Get on iTunes and download the featurette, people - it's very cuddly.

Posted by: malikvlc at September 11, 2009 10:49 AM

KW reminds me of Brad Pitt in Legends of the Fall, particularly of that scene when he's in the tent, right after he scalped his brother and he's holding the knife up with his "dontcha mess with me! The powers of the Earth are with me, motherfucker!" look. Only KW doesn't look threatening at all. Maybe he looks more like Brad Pitt in Legends of the Fall when he and Susannah are bathing in the river, and she's talking about having kids with him and he's not paying attention to her 'cause he has waaaay too many thoughts and the spirits of the Earth are with him.

Anyway, KW reminds me of Brad Pitt, pre kids.

Now my pants are all warm and fuzzy. I don't know wht we need the initials though. KW, You shall now be known as Kool Whip.

Posted by: admin at September 11, 2009 10:51 AM

gp, I just snorted a sugar wafer into my brain when I read that. You don't think that will hurt me, do you? I mean, I've had to do a lot of brain cleansing in the last week or so, thanks to DR, but I just don't hwoenxlsgouape945uqopawenb0[-as09uyea;sga............

Posted by: dammitjanet at September 11, 2009 10:52 AM

I'm glad that was the very first comment, gp. Really sets the mood.

Posted by: commanderfunky at September 11, 2009 10:59 AM

i would totally sit on judith's face.

I read that as shit and thought 'what the hell did Judith ever do?!'

Posted by: Carrie at September 11, 2009 11:00 AM

The very fact that you go a little gay for certain movies (or actors) is the reason I read this site, Rowles. Fuck the rest of 'em.

Posted by: Sapphiar at September 11, 2009 11:11 AM

What Sapphiar said.

Jesus, these Wild Things posts turn this place into Girls Gone Wild! I need to get me a horn on my face. Then I wouldn't have to make up stories about my sex life like that creepy guy from Yorba Linda who "made up" the stories about spanking girls 19 years younger than himself.

That little boy is so adorable, I just want to squish him.

I read the book to my kid the other night for the first time. He loved it. But I'm pretty sure he's too young for the movie.

Posted by: Captain Tuttle at September 11, 2009 12:02 PM

What Saphpiar said, indeed.

Also, admin, I will think of KW as Kool Whip now too.

And in conclusion, Carol is technically also a male name, though it's rarely used as such these days.

Posted by: lizzieborden at September 11, 2009 12:23 PM

squee!

loved this book as a child, and have found no reason thus far not to be wicked excited bout this movie

on the complete other end of the spectrum, has anybody else seen the posters for the movie adaption of Cloudy, With a Chance of Meatballs?

Posted by: bethy at September 11, 2009 12:32 PM

Love...

Posted by: Courtney at September 11, 2009 12:49 PM

Oh come ON! Why haven't I seen this film twice already? This is getting fucking ridiculous and I'm sick of the whole sorry situation whereby this film comes out on a day that isn't now. I blame Harvey fricking Weinstein. What an idiot.

I am getting so filled with buzzing, tense excitement about this film that I may just have to go and do an angry dance of love in another room, to cool myself down.

Posted by: Caspar at September 11, 2009 1:23 PM

I have the strangest feeling that if this film makes the long list for Best Picture at the Oscars, it will win under the new preferential voting system. I can see voters going "It's so cute and I really loved it. What's the harm in placing it number 2? There's no chance it will win." Then, BAM! Where the Wild Things Are wins Best Picture and the host flies off into to Hollywood night on his mighty winged horse and rains fire on the non-believers.

Posted by: Robert at September 11, 2009 1:29 PM

I want a Wild Thing of my own. It would be all kinds of helpful and cute.

Snath: you're freaking me out a little there, buddy.

Posted by: figgy at September 11, 2009 1:33 PM

Seeing these new posters and noticing that they seem to all have female names, while the main protagonist is a male, albeit a boy, makes me come to the conclusion this movie is going to be about a harem full of furries. The movie will chronicle the descent of this boy who lords over the furries, not realizing their secret desires and fantasies, only to enter puberty and be sucked into this underworld of the furverse.

Though I as well loved this book growing up.

Posted by: Stevie at September 11, 2009 3:30 PM

iirc, KW and Judith are the only female wild things. Carol is a dude.

Posted by: moe at September 11, 2009 3:43 PM

I feel alienated because no matter how good the monsters look, or how well edited the trailer is, I still feel so very sad that a book I loved deeply as a child for it's simplicity and appeal to the imagination is being turned into a movie. Reading with my mom, and on my own, was such a large part of my childhood and learning about the world around me. Books made far more of an impact on me than movies, and I want my own kids (whenever I have them) to have that same experience. I don't doubt that the people involved in this movie love the source material, it's obvious from the care being taken that they do, but movies are just such a passive form of entertainment and this was a book that worked very strongly to involve the reader.

It's looking more and more like I'm just going to have to get rid of my television set when I do finally have kids. If for no other reason than I'm apparently a crotchety old fart when it comes to children's entertainment.

I'LL EAT YOU UP, I LOVE YOU SO!

Posted by: DontStopNow at September 11, 2009 8:31 PM

I want to take Max home and wash his little face and make him warm and sit him at my table and feed him macaroni and cheese and a glass of milk with Nestle's chocolate mixed into it and a cookie for dessert.

I mention this because it's very rare for me to feel maternal. But what a gorgeous child.

Posted by: Jerce at September 11, 2009 8:31 PM

oh, these posters just made me squeal with glee. and i'm in a communal computer room in a dorm-type place where i clearly don't even remotely belong. awesome. be that as it may, can't wait to see this. win.

Posted by: betsy at September 11, 2009 10:52 PM

Christ, these posters.

If the climax doesn't live up to the foreplay, I'll eat my hat (and I'm from Texas- it's a big fucking hat).

Fuck! So excited!

Posted by: Cat at September 13, 2009 11:36 PM

I had understood that the Wild Things were based on Sendak's aunts and uncles, one of whom (an uncle) was called Karol.

I always thought the one with the horn and the dark hair looked like Chris Cornell circa 1992. First crush!

Posted by: embertine at September 14, 2009 4:22 AM

So are Brad and Angelina together? Have they split up? Whatever... it will be all change in the papaers next week anyway!

Posted by: Breastox at February 6, 2010 2:08 PM

The latter two types are sometimes prepared by students as part of an assignment, but most posters are usually store-bought.

I will, and i mean it... i will tell my friends about this site. He is so into this topic he will be ultra happy!
