I had never heard of the documentary Dear Zachary until Dustin included it on our list of terrible families to spend Thanksgiving with, and the entire comments section turned into a weepy puddle of emotion. As I understand it now, this is one of the most painful, heartbreaking movies ever made, about a man named Andrew Bagby (who happens to be the filmmaker’s best friend) murdered by his former girlfriend, and the horrifying events that followed.

The film was originally intended only to be viewed by Bagby’s family before it got a wider release, and it played a large role in actually amending Canada’s criminal code in 2010. And now, six years after its release, Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father is being made into a miniseries. The filmmaker Kurt Kuenne says,

For six years, I’ve turned down overtures to dramatize this story because I didn’t think such a production needed to exist, but the number of people who’ve written me to say this story changed their life made me realize that bringing it to a wider audience might do a lot of good, as long as the story was told with humanity, dignity and honesty. I look forward to working with Universal Cable Productions along with Aaron Kaplan and Sean Perrone to produce an artful dramatization of the a highest quality.
Because if 90 minutes of the most depressing, heartbreaking subject imaginable isn’t enough, spread it out into a week-long event.
