You're Not Allowed to Have Nice Things

What do Amber Tamblyn, Ray Stevenson and zombies have in common? “Babylon Fields,” a dark comedy zombie series that got to the point of making a pilot for CBS in 2007 but didn’t get picked up. The full pilot is now up online, though it will undoubtedly get take down notices issued soon. I mean, they refuse to broadcast it or sell it, but they’ll be damned if anyone sees it for free. You fucking communists, you should be ashamed of yourselves.

And remember, CBS didn’t pick this up in Fall of 2007, because instead they had to make room for these new series instead:

“The Big Bang Theory” (HA! Nerds and a blond, what will they come up with next?)

“Cane” (Jimmy Smits gets a show that lasts a maximum of four episodes every television season, whether he needs it or not)

“Kid Nation” (I knew “Lord of the Flies,” I read “Lord of the Flies” and you sir are no “Lord of the Flies”)

“Moonlight” (Vampires! Can’t miss!)

“Viva Laughlin” (Who wouldn’t love Wolverine singing in the homeless man’s Vegas?)

“Swingtown” (Swingers in the seventies … no I don’t have a joke here, how could this have not been awesome?)

Wow, tough choices there, I can’t even imagine which of those I’d bump off in order to give “Bablyon Fields” a chance.

The 2010 Scream Award Winners | New "The Walking Dead" Clip | You Asked The Question, Here's The Answer. Let's Get Bloody

Think I've seen Amber turn up in promos for a new show or movie or something, but damned if I can remember what.

I kinda liked the few eps of "Joan of Arcadia" I ever saw.

Aaaanndd... It's already been taken down. Or, my work's browser sucks. Probably the latter.

At least we're getting The Walking Dead (only 10 days away!), but it would've been nice to have a comedy zombie series, as well. You know how a Monster Squad remake keeps popping up on the rumor mill? They ought to just turn that idea into a TV show, and make the kids a little older -- like a cross between Monster Squad and Mystery Team. But a TV show.

That would never get made...

Posted by: RobP at October 21, 2010 10:34 AM

Poor Bail Organa can't seem to get a series that sticks.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at October 21, 2010 10:38 AM

RobP, isn't that basically what "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" was? Maybe not all the monsters allied at once, but they pretty much covered all the bases.

None of them have ever been in my kitchen? Ok, now to read the post...

I'm 15 minutes in, and I wouldn't have greenlit it and I love zombies. No decay, basic makeup, just a little too weird.

You've still got almost another 30 minutes, so why judge so soon?
It's not the best thing ever done, but it sure as hell is a lot better than all of the shit they aired that season.

Posted by: Rykker at October 21, 2010 11:24 AM

That looks really, really promising! So, of course, we don't get to watch it.

Posted by: peachfish at October 21, 2010 11:30 AM

This is NOT a comedy! It's a drama, kind of like that show where the A;iens were integrated amongst the humans and one of em was a cop... damn brain fart. But that's just what it's like. Kind of awesome.

Seriously, give it the 45 minutes.

Posted by: Bucko at October 21, 2010 11:37 AM

Wow, it really was good. I know that I usually express utter disdain for zombie stuff (I blame Max Brooks and TK, natch), but that was pretty intriguing. I really like the twist that they aren't mindless. And yet, with that bar scene, there is the hint that they aren't completely benign.

And any show that dares address the mechanics of zombie-human sex (and with such an average looking couple, no "fat guy, hot wife" bullshit here) should be given a chance.

No wonder CBS passed, it was far too out there for that network.

Also, I gotta say: Leila Arcieri in that cop outfit and Amber Tamblyn in those tight jeans did help with the enjoyment.

Helped A LOT.

In my PANTS.

Hrm, yes I vaguely recall hearing about this show and then it never happening. It's a pretty good pilot. Better, at least, than all of those shows SLW listed that did get greenlighted that season (greenlit?) I would have totally watched this.

Posted by: JenVegas at October 21, 2010 1:34 PM

@Bucko: you're thinking of Alien Nation, right?

This is one of those times where I'm glad to be underemployed, cause I'm 'bout to watch the shit outta this!

Posted by: Rest In Peace at October 21, 2010 1:40 PM

That's too bad. It was pretty good.

If I saw a dead guy crawl out of the ground and start walkin' around...and all he wanted was a donut? Give 'em the damn donut. Or is it doughnut?

Posted by: Candee at October 21, 2010 2:16 PM

It lacked a little visual style but I would have watched it.

It does have a fresh take on the zombie genre. That alone should have given it the right to at least air.

Posted by: junierizzle at October 21, 2010 3:56 PM

Sorry, I know I said it already, but I REALLY like Tamblyn in those tight jeans.

A LOT.

Posted by: Vermillion at October 21, 2010 4:54 PM

Damn that was good. I'd have watched that.

Posted by: carpejugulum at October 21, 2010 5:04 PM

Yes, R.I.P., Alien Nation. Thanks!

Posted by: Bucko at October 21, 2010 5:16 PM

I'd have watched it. With a loyal fan base they probably could have done better makeup too. Considering it was just a pilot it had a lot of strengths- keeping the scope small, the human effect. The scene with the priest was by far the strongest.

She'll be replacing Olivia Wilde AKA Thirteen on House. Or, as we say in Canada, Hoose.

Correction to my own posting: Olivia Wilde is on sabbatical to shoot a movie and will be back. But Amber Tamblyn will be on for "multiple episodes". IN MY PANTS. (Thank you, Vemillion.)

Posted by: Uriah Creep at October 21, 2010 11:02 PM

How did this not get greenlit? Or sold to the SciFi network?

Posted by: Ignatz at October 21, 2010 11:27 PM

haha that was funny

Nice thoughts on Walking Dead. I absolutely haven't been freaked by a series that much since Alfred Hitchcock played many years ago. I look forward to seeing your thoughts on WDE2!

It's funny how those who talk trash about NASCAR, also have never been to a NASCAR event or any other racing event.

Products for super dry! Acne prone skin!? Assist PLEASE!!!??? I'm sick of suffering!? I have truly dry acne prone skin. My acne medication has dried my deal with out horribly(thanks doc) & I've decided to discontinue the use of it. My face is constantly peeling and burning... So I was pondering if you could recommend a noncomogenic /oil free moisturizer that's genuinely moisturizing & a experience wash for acne prone skin that's not too drying. Thanks in advance. I am sick of suffering!
