Yesterday in Florida (where else?), a jury failed to convict 47 year old Michael Dunn of first-degree murder after a 2012 incident in which Dunn shot and killed 17-year-old Jordan Davis over loud music coming from the SUV occupied by Davis and three friends outside a convenience store. Though the jury was able to come to an agreement in convicting Dunn of attempted murder for shooting into a carful of teenagers, they deadlocked on the murder charge, and a mistrial was called, which not only lets Dunn off the hook for the greater charge, it provides Dunn’s defense with a more opportunities to poke holes in the prosecution on appeal for the attempted murder convictions.

In other words, Dunn may yet walk free for shooting into a car of teenagers because their “thug music” apparently frightened him and he shot in self defense. It’s bullshit, of course, but that’s a Florida jury for you. On the murder charge, after 30 hours of deliberations, the only thing they could agree on was that they couldn’t agree on anything.

New Orleans native Wendell Pierce, best known as Bunk in The Wire, and for roles in The Michael J. Fox Show and Treme, reacted angrily to the verdict on Twitter this morning, asking in frustration, “How long will they kill our children while we stand around and look?” Pierce has been vocal on Twitter in related matters (such as the Trayvon Martin shooting), and he was the celebrity who reacted the most angrily last year when an intern from The Onion joked that Quvenzhane Wallis was a “c*nt.”

Early this morning, Pierce shared his frustrations over the mistrial.
