Well, When Exactly Do You Mean? Meet Your New 'Doctor Who' Villain (and a New Companion)

It feels like forever since we said goodbye to Matt Smith and got a little peek at Peter Capaldi’s Twelve, but in actuality, it’s not even three months yet. And a-hankering, we are. Spies have caught a few filming photos, and some charming tidbits such as how Capaldi rode a mechanical horse because he’s afraid of real ones.

We’ve had a look at his über-cool duds:

And here’s the latest news: Jenna Coleman’s Clara Oswald won’t be Twelve’s only companion; Samuel Anderson (Gavin & Stacey, The Doctors, Emmerdale) will join the TARDIS party as Danny Pink, Oswald’s colleague and teacher at Coal Hill Secondary School. The school has been seen in several Who episodes, including “An Unearthly Child” and “Remembrance of the Daleks.” (Anderson and Coleman have worked together previously on Emmerdale.)

Finally, the gorgeous and talented Keeley Hawes (Line of Duty, Upstairs Downstairs, Ashes to Ashes, The Avengers, MI-5) will play a villainous banker called Ms. Delphox, who hides a dark secret. DUN DUN DUN. Oh, who cares who she plays…as long as she shows up wearing these glasses. Librarian fantasies, engage (oops, wrong show).

Of course, it wouldn’t be Moffat’s Doctor Who if there wasn’t some terrible rumor lingering in the background, so I may as well uncover it here. Grain of salt and all that…

The Mirror claims they’ve heard Peter Capaldi will only be around for one series; that he’s essentially a transition to “an even more radical choice.” The whole piece reads very cloak and dagger (we read: speculative), so, let’s hope speculation is all it is. I’m all for radical choices, but I’m also positively excited and delighted for Capaldi—I’d like to see him hang around a bit.

Wait, wait, wait! Bonus rumor time!

The Mirror is calling out EastEnders’ Steve John Shepherd for the role, while Doctor Who TV thinks it could be Charles Dance; that’s quite a spread. I don’t think I can sleep anymore.

Cindy Davis, (Twitter) has already waited too long.

After loving the hell out of Tennant I am struggling so damn hard to get through Smith. I genuinely dislike his iteration.

  • DominaNefret

I blame Moffat for that. I think he had so much potential that he couldn't possibly live up to under Moffat's show direction.

  • lowercase_ryan

I tend to agree with that.

  • DominaNefret

Have you gotten to Clara yet? It is so much worse with her. She is a character that started off with so much potential who ended up being utterly bland because she was obviously created to be a plot device instead of a person. The writers had too many limitations put on them to actually be able to develop her character.

  • lowercase_ryan

Nope, still with Rory and Amy. I'm telling you, this stretch is such a slog for me.

  • Al Borland's Beard

An even more radical choice? I hope the next doctor is the ghost of Patrick Stewart possessing a talking pie.

  • Jim

Well Hello there {raises left eyebrow slightly} Mr Anderson.

  • Drake

    Indeed.

  • Ozioma

If Peter Capaldi really is leaving after one series, he's all the better for it, especially if Steven Moffat is still in charge of the show.

That said, I would throw ALL my money at the BBC if there's even the slightest chance of seeing Malcolm fucking Tucker squaring off against Tywin fucking Lannister.

  • Blake

Boo if it's true Capaldi is only going to be 12 for 1 series (I wanted someone for at least a few years).

But if by “an even more radical choice” we get Richard Ayoade or Kate Ashfield as 13 then I can live with that.

I just want Series 8 to start already DAMNIT!

  • Cowtools

I can't believe you posted that photo of Keeley Hawes and didn't mention her role in the excellent UK miniseries Tipping The Velvet.

Trust me, if you like this photo, you need to watch that show.

  • idiosynchronic

And BTW, if Lara Croft, Tomb Raider, haunts your auditory erotic fantasies . . same actress.

  • DominaNefret

    NO. CAPALDI STAY, MOFFAT GO.

  • BobbFrapples

Just curious, but who would you rather see handle the show? If Davies has reenergized with fresh ideas, I wouldn't mind his return. Also...just to float the idea...I'd love to see a Doctor Who with Neil Gaiman as the creative head.

  • Berry

I'd have to vote no on Gaiman, as deliciously off the left field as that idea is. It's just that, in my opinion, when Gaiman's playground is too big for his talents, he tends to veer toward bloated and unwieldy. And what's bigger than the whole universe and the series that could potentially go on forever? Although, he did mostly well with Sandman, which ended up being huge, but the individual stories were contained enough to stay in his grasp. So maybe the episodic format would work in his favor too?

I might have accidentally talked myself into liking the idea. But now I also remembered that the two episodes he already wrote left me kinda cold. So I'm torn, but remain cautiously intrigued by the idea.

  • DominaNefret

This is what makes me skeptical too. Gaiman also has issues with endings. While Doctor Who is something that goes on and on and on, some of the story lines do need endings.

  • Berry

Endings, yes, and writing interesting and well-rounded human protagonists, so I wouldn't trust him with creating new companions either.

  • DominaNefret

Davies' last series was probably the best of the show so far. If he came in reenergized, with new Ideas, he could be phenomenal.
I wasn't too keen on Gaiman's last episode, so I don't know. I'm not sure how well the show would benefit from being too Gaiman-y. It would be interesting to see though.
    I just want Moffat gone.

  • Ozioma

At this point - with universal reset buttons, timey-wimey bullshit, blatant misogyny, queerbaiting and erasure, basic continuity errors and a huge disrespect for the fandom becoming the norm - I would accept a lemur who penned scripts with feces if it can do better than Moffat.

  • DominaNefret

I agree entirely, especially after finally catching up on Sherlock. On top of the issues you just mentioned, that last episode of series three has to be the most overwrought, melodramatic, busy, fan-servicey episode of television I have ever seen. It makes me EXTREMELY worried about what this next series of Doctor Who is going to be like, especially since he obviously cares more about Sherlock than he does Doctor Who.

  • Maddy

I could not agree with this more.

  • Ben

Oh dear lord that photo of Keeley Hawes.. I need some alone time.

  • I want her glasses. I'm sure that's what you're thinking too.

  • Ben

If I wore glasses I would dig the fuck out of glasses like that. Those are fucking boss arse glasses. Also that hair is amazing.

  • Marc Greene

It might be interesting if in this regen cycle the Doctor gets older rather than the last where he seemed to keep growing younger.
