Welcome To The Baddest Cast Ever: Gangster Squad Casting News

Never let it be said that Ruben Fleischer doesn’t like a challenge. He’s creating quite the eclectic resume — first with the marvelous Zombieland, then with 30 Minutes Or Less, a film that many didn’t care for but that I enjoyed the ass off of, and now he’s got Gangster Squad (based on an LA Times article by Paul Lieberman and adapted by former LA homicide detective and author Will Beall) in the works. The film is about the LAPD’s lengthy battle with mobster Meyer “Mickey” Cohen in the 1940’s, and the cast is getting a little ridiculous. Here’s a rundown of what we’ve got so far:

Cohen himself will be played by Sean Penn, while two of the main members of the LAPD that are trying to take him down will be played by Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin. Then, he picked up Bryan Cranston (“Breaking Bad”) to play another cop. Not done yet, they’re throwing in Michael Pena, Robert Patrick, Mireille Enos, Anthony Mackie and Giovanni Ribisi. I mean, damn.

Now, Film School Rejects reports that two new bodies have been added — The King of Grizzle himself, Nick Nolte will play the chief of police, and Emma Stone will play a part as well.

So that’s happening. It’s a phenomenal cast on a hell of a project, and I am officially im-fucking-patient for 2013.

The title makes me think of The Monster Squad, which just makes me think of 'kick him in the nards!!'. I'm sure this movie will be a little more highbrow than that though.

Aside from my ever-growing distaste with Sean Penn, the cast is fantastic, and as another person who enjoyed '30 Minutes or Less', and 'Zombieland', I'll see any movie that Fleischer makes at this point. I really like his particular spin on action movies/sequences. I normally find chase scenes really boring, but he gives GREAT chase scene.

SEAN PENN DOESN"T HAVE NARDS!

I know Mickey Cohen was a real guy and all that, but every time I see his name, all I can think is that part in L.A. Confidential when they arrest him for tax evasion. "Something had to be done, but nothing too original, cause hey! This is Hollywood. What worked for Al Capone would work for the Mickster."

I though Bryan Cranston was off project this due to scheduling conflicts?

Looks like they've got Sullivan Stapelton, too. That makes me happy. More beefcake, more often.
