Javier Bardem Joins Shia LaBeouf in Wall Street 2

Still Sounds Crappy / Dustin Rowles

We’ve known for a long time now that Oliver Stone is putting together a sequel for Wall Street, the Oscar nominated 1987 film that won Michael Douglas an Academy Award. I’m not sure why everyone seems to be getting so excited about the sequel, though. It was a great movie in 1987, but that was 22 years ago. Again: Most sequels that require some measure of generation jumping just don’t work. Reboots or remakes, maybe. But how many people really want to see a follow-up to a 22-year-old movie? Is anyone here in the least bit interested in this film?

Anyway, while we’ve known about the sequel, Nikkie Finke — who eats shit for breakfast and craps rainbows — has gotten some details about the movie. First off, it’s expected to begin filming late this summer, and is scheduled to be released in February, 2010. As for the plot: It will pick up 21 years after the original film. Gordon Gekko (Douglas) will get out of the clink a disgraced man on the fringes of Wall Street. His biggest problem, however, is that his relationship with his daughter is strained (oh, ugh). His daughter (in a role still to be cast) will be engaged to a character played by Shia LaBeouf (oh, double ugh).

Anyway, LaBeouf’s mentor killed himself, and LaBeouf wants to get to the bottom of a corporate scandal that is part of the Wall Street bullshittery that will lead to the June 2008 bailout frenzy. The culprit behind the cover-up or whatever will be played by Javier Bardem (nice). In order to do so, he seeks the assistance of Gekko, who agrees to help on the condition that LaBeouf’s character helps him mend his relationship with his daughter.

Well, that sounds like a movie that actually belongs in the 80s. A crappy relationship drama? Gekko was great because he was an evil bastard. I have no desire to see a softer, gentler Gekko attempting to reconcile with his daughter.

All I’m saying is: Bardem better be evil. As in, Anton Chigurh evil. And I hope he uses that cattle gun on LaBeouf.

You know, I say: go ahead! Full steam with this MONUMENTAL pile of excrement, put it out there, as soon as possible so as to help LaDouche along on his ballistic rise from, and, fall back to obscurity.

Yeah....kinda seems like the last movie character you should resurrect nowadays is the Wall Street shark that opined that "greed is good".

Douglas is fun in the role, but I never thought the original movie as a whole was that great.

I would almost have SOME glimmer of hope for it being serviceable as, at least, a Saturday afternoon TBS feature if Gekko remained an unrepentant a-hole. Buuuuut it doesn't seem like that is how he's gonna roll here.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at June 2, 2009 7:45 PM

i think it sounds good, and has relevance today.

ohhh goddd of course Pajiba is too cool, as usual! if you're so smart why dont you write a movie script, instead of just ripping on absolutely everything!

Why don't we start by taking a look at YOUR Academy Award contender first then we'll start on ours.

Oh, and are we supposed to show you our Congressional run returns before we talk about politics too? Or how about when we talk about scientific breakthroughs? Where do we fax you the copies of our MIT diplomas?

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at June 2, 2009 8:03 PM

If only Gekko were back to sleaze his way to the top, 80's style.

...AWEsome, awesome...to the MAX.

The Fuck!!! You want a relationship with your daughter, what is this “Lifetime?” I want blow, bitches, and motherfuckas making billions doing insider trading. A relationship with your daughter my ass, negro please.

I watched this a couple months ago for old times sake and was pleasantly surprised- I think not only is it relevant to today's financial fuckups but it has held up pretty well over the last 22 years.
If the sequel sounded half as interesting as the first film, I'd be interested. Unfortunately, it sounds like a snoozefest, with Shia Ladouche to boot? I'll pass. GREED, FOR LACK OF A BETTER WORD, IS GOOD!

i always think it's the worst idea since Michael Bay director!

Hey, just because he wants a "relationship" with his daughter, doesn't mean that it'll work.

Perhaps it'll turn out as well as Randy "The Ram"'s relationship with HIS daughter in "The Wrestler".

And Dustin, you nailed my thoughts on this film exactly re: Bardim's character.

I can't believe I am agreeing with BSlim...

Jees, go fuck yourself. We are the audience. Therefore, we get to judge all we want. You really wanna live in a world where only people who make movies can criticize movies?

Posted by: tnassip at June 2, 2009 9:25 PM

Oh, and using your logic:

Why don't you try making a website before you go criticizing Pajiba, huh?

What the fuck happened to Shia? I swear to god he used to be an actual actor.

Oh... this.

See, I think this movie is a good idea (in theory).
But what I see being put into practice is just another bowl of frosted crap flakes.

I mean, if Gekko had gotten out earlier, fought his way to the top of the corporate ladder again, but this time as a consultant to the banking industry. He's still a villian, but this time he'll win because this time it's technically legal.

Also, what I think this movie lacks is probably some time to age. It's the same problem that made W. such a flop. It's...just too close. Wall Street was great because everyone was on top. It wasn't about the collapse of a system, it was about the greed of one man.

But that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.

You must be psychic. That's EXACTLY what I was scrolling along and thinking: Relationship? I hope he totally fucks it up like the Ram.

Can you smellllllllllllllllllll what the Ram is cooking?

Posted by: Guess Who! at June 2, 2009 11:52 PM

This sequel should prove that greed is not always good.

What movie was it exactly that showed Shia to be a talented actor? Seems to me he played (with) himself in Disturbia and has been playing (with) himself ever since.

Posted by: Neodiogenes at June 3, 2009 12:56 AM

Er, I meant "Holes", not "Disturbia". Got his filmography mixed up.

Posted by: Neodiogenes at June 3, 2009 12:58 AM

Just as well, Neodiogenes--I don't think any of us wants to think about Shia playing (with) himself in Holes.

Posted by: meaux at June 3, 2009 8:26 AM

Hum, Shia seems to be transforming (see what I did there?) into the actor who plays the "son" of the actor from the original old movie.

1. Rear Window (check)
2. Indiana Jones (check)
3. Wall Street (check)

4. Planet of the Apes (I predict he'll be the half ape / half human son of Charlton Heston and Charlton Heston).

But how many people really want to see a follow-up to a 22-year-old movie?

4 words for you sir...The Color of Money. 25 years in the life of "Fast Eddie" Felson. And it was fucking brilliant. So yes...I can hope.

Posted by: PissBoy at June 3, 2009 9:18 AM

But how many people really want to see a follow-up to a 22-year-old movie?

9 Words. "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Crap." There is no hope.

Posted by: BWeaves at June 3, 2009 9:44 AM

I heard an ungodly rumor that Shia was going to be in the next Batman movie. That's just a bunch of hoo-ha, right?

Posted by: shelleyh at June 3, 2009 10:59 AM

I don't care, I LOVE me some Shia. I can't even explain it. I love him so much that I would come get him out of jail the next time he gets drunk and shoplifts or crashes a car.

Love him so much, y'all.

Help me?

"It wasn't about the collapse of a system, it was about the greed of one man."

I don't know - I think the parallel story about Charlie/Martin Sheen shows the triumph of capital over labor, a collapsing-system very relevant to the 80s. I've always found this movie relevant and timely.
