How many sharks do you have to jump to get to New York?

I don’t know what the punchline here is (other than maybe “a lot”), but the New Girl crew is going to find out. The show is planning an hour-long crossover episode with Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which will air October 11th, and I’m having trouble coming up with any way in which this might be a good idea.

So far, all we know is that the episode will be set in New York. Is Winston going to have wacky police adventures? Is Jess going to have a hard time adjusting to the city’s iconic fast-paced unfriendliness? Will they visit Coach? That last one is the only thing I’d actually like to see, but the first two are near-definites for a once-great show that has been steering toward full ’90s formulaic sitcom for a while now.

“The crossover episode has historically been the artistic high point of any show that has dared to attempt it,” said New Girl creator Elizabeth Meriwether. “Maybe you remember Blackout Thursday on NBC, or even further back the infamous Alf/Gilligan’s Island crossover of the late 1980s. New Girl and Brooklyn Nine-Nine will proudly and humbly go where few shows have gone since the 1990s. We know we have big shoes to fill, and we look forward to disappointing everyone. There’s a 50 percent chance Alf will also be in both episodes. But there’s also a 50 percent chance that is a lie.”

Oh damn, I always forget that the episode of Friends where Chandler’s stuck in the ATM vestibule was part of a crossover night. That was a fantastic episode. I don’t think it’s enough, though, to raise hopes about this idea, at least not to any significant degree. New Girl had a solid last few episodes, and B99 just introduced a major shake-up in their last finale. Do we really need an hour-long gimmick? Add to that the fact that both shows are on the same network, but made by different studios, and how can we expect any sort of cohesion that does well by either show?
