I Wonder How Bad the Shows Were That Didn't Get Picked Up

Yesterday afternoon, we talked about Fox’s new 2010/2011 schedule. Well now we’ve got some preview clips of Fox’s new shows and, uh, not much to write home about.

“Bob’s Burgers”

Prognosis: Sunday night’s Animation Domination nonsense is all around terrible now, so “Bob’s Burgers” will fit right in.

“Lonestar”

Prognosis: A relatively mellow Jon Voight is a good thing, and that Adrianne Palicki sure is purty. Beyond that, well, this looks pretty pedestrian. If you accept it for what it is, it may not be that bad. It’s just that what it is is something I’m not particularly interested in.

“Mixed Signals”

Prognosis: I am loving this modern trend of comedies not actually being funny!

“Raising Hope”

Prognosis: Vegas has set the over/under for number of episodes that actually air at 3.5. The under is looking like a pretty safe bet.

“Ride-Along”

Prognosis: Yeah, I’m in, even though it’s yet another cop show with a fairly dumb title.

“Running Wilde”

Prognosis: I want to like this. I really do. But it’s gonna be a serious uphill battle to be me there (at least I laughed once, which is more than can be said for “Mixed Signals” or “Raising Hope”).

And a resounding "Meh" is heard throughout the land ...

It's times like this I'm glad to be an expat.

I'm an expat too; unfortunately, I was ex-patriated to the place where these shows are made.

Is GOB 2.0 supposed to be endearing or something? Am I supposed to give a crap about his love life? 'Cause that clip made me hate him, AND hate the woman for liking him for some undefined, unfathomable reason.

At one point during the cartoon clip I thought I was having a seizure. Apparently the kid kept firing off the extinguisher and interrupting the zoom, but Christ Almighty, it was torture to watch.

I didn't even make it through the Wilde clip. I really don't like comedy where I don't give a flying f*ck about or even like any of the characters. Hence my scorn for the corny joke extravagapalooza that is 30 Rock.

Clive Owen thinks Will Arnett has no range as an actor.

"Bob's Burgers" made me angry, it was so stupid.

None of the other trailers made me care at all, either.

I, too, want to like "Running Wilde," but aside from the stupid title, the show itself looks really, really stupid.

But I have to admit that I laughed twice:

"All right! But if you tell anyone I can read minds, the deal is off."

And:

"Not if I can make you a worse woman."

Please don't judge me. I just love Will Arnett so much.

My top lip still hasn't uncurled from disdain for what is passing as comedy in these clips. I hope my face don't stay this way.

I'll make a guilty confession too: I giggled at "It's really important that you do not feed her anything with a picture of a boy on it or else she will grow a mustache."

That and him throwing up on the baby. C'mon dads, admit it. How many times have you nearly blown chunks on your babies upon witnessing a green, gloppy, biohazard diaper?

Other than that, I think I'm dumber for having watched all of those clips.

Was that Peter Serafinowicz 'blacked up' as an indian in Running Wilde?

jesus.

This Bob's Burger lead character sounds like Charlie from Charlie the Unicorn. "It didn't say anything!"

I'll take GOB and Hurwitz anywhere I can get em, but DAMN that show looks horrible. Maybe because they packaged the trailer like a bad romantic comedy movie. I'll take a look-see though.

It appears there are two new shows coming with the Amazon featured. Hmm...

Will Arnett kills me. I don't know why.

Fox just needs to understand that the whole "backstory" and "creative arc" and "purpose" of shows that have Will Arnett don't need to exist. You just pay him a shitload of money, tell him to act like Gob, and film it for 3 hours a day, cutting down what you have to.

Think Curb Your Enthusiasm, but without the self-deprecating Jewish jokes, you get MAGIC!

Bob's Burgers seems like it would fit right in with the McFarlane trifecta of shit. It even had that thing where they repeat a 'joke' or a 'funny' sound ad nauseum because clearly the more you repeat something the funnier it is. Amirite?

Unexpected return of 'Colin has a big knob' from love actually in that Mixed Signals clip.

So... Lonestar is basically a re-do of Dallas, right?

Thank you, Fox. I was feeling weird after actually enjoying and planning to watch a surprising number of NBC's new shows. I am not interested in a single one of these, and that's a much more natural feeling for me.

Bob's Burgers depresses me because the dad is the same voice actor as the lead in Archer. I'm not used to hearing him not be hysterical.

The others do nothing for me. A few were approaching things that I might find entertaining, then veered off horribly. Having friends on speaker phone when pulled over by a cop is a potentially funny concept. But, not a laugh to be had. "I want people to look at me the same way that that baby does" is somewhat of a touching line, but it's surrounded by 3 minutes of unfunny shit. Will Arnett as GOB, we know that has at least three seasons of comic gold potential, yet this swings and misses with such enthusiasm you'd swear they planned it. And I'd love a show about a con man. It's an untapped genre. But then they had to go and just make that the back story as the show is actually about redemption and love (and those don't seem to work or have any power in the clips). Fuck that.

So thank you, Fox, for reminding me what it's like to be comfortably unimpressed and annoyed.
