Two Great Tastes That Taste Great Together? | Starz Brings on Gus Van Sant and Kelsey Grammer

Two Great Tastes That Taste Great Together?

Gus Van Sant. Kelsey Grammer. Your mind wouldn’t automatically put them in the same thought together, but hey, it could work. Mmm…peanut butter cups.

I really dig it when the cool movie people come to television. Just look at “Boardwalk Empire”, how many people other than Martin Scorcese could be getting that done? The big names seem to bring big things - to cable, at least.

According to Deadline next up is Milk and Good Will Hunting director Gus Van Sant, who’ll be helming the pilot for (and executive producing) a new Starz series called “Boss”. Inspired by King Lear, “Boss” will star Kelsey Grammer as the ailing Mayor of Chicago. After he is diagnosed with a degenerative mental illness, he does his best to keep the information from the rest of the world (sounds a little like “The Big C”). I wouldn’t mind seeing both Van Sant and Grammer go with a dark, comedy a la To Die For here, but the show is being described as a political drama. Still, to do this well will require humor and I hope they don’t waste Grammer’s impeccable timing.

There’s no word yet on co-stars (would it be wrong to suggest David Hyde Pierce?) or a start date (Grammer is currently starring in a Tony nominated role on Broadway’s La Cage Aux Folles and contracted through February 2011), but Starz has already ordered eight episodes.
