SAMCRO Could Use a Member Who Can't Die

A couple little loose ends of TV new from yesterday warrant a mention, mostly from FX, which dropped its early 2010 plans. First, FX announced that the third season of “Damages” will premiere on January 25 at 10 p.m. (For those of you without calendars, this means the show is moving to Monday nights.) I think “Damages” is highly overrated from a plotting and writing perspective, but it’s cast really well and the acting quality has earned its keep in my regular rotation for the time being, so I’ll be tuning in.

Meanwhile, for those of you who watched the season finale of “Sons of Anarchy” on Tuesday night, you might have seen the extended trailer for Timothy Olyphant’s new show, formerly called “Lawman,” now called “Justified.” While FX has not given it a firm premiere date yet, the network has confirmed that it’ll start airing sometime in March. I’d post that trailer for you here, but I couldn’t find it online. Way to lose free publicity, FX. Anyway, Olyphant plays a modern-day sheriff apparently loosely based on an Elmore Leonard character (Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens), and the show looks pretty interesting. I’ll definitely be giving it a shot both because one of the producers and writers is Graham Yost (who was responsible for the sorely under-appreciated “Boomtown” and wrote a few “Band of Brothers” episodes) and because Olyphant looks to essentially be playing the badass side of sheriff Seth Bullock, and there ain’t nothing wrong with that.

Speaking of “Sons,” how fucking good was this second season? Bloody fantastic. So it comes as little surprise that the now critically-acclaimed show has been picked up for a 13-episode third season, with Kurt Sutter re-signed to showrun for two seasons (assuming a fourth season is picked up after the third, which seems highly likely), and it’s reported that all the regular cast members will be returning. Since the second season just ended, even though Sutter already knows the major arc of the third season (*minor spoiler* SAMCRO will be making an appearance in Belfast, which makes sense if you watched the finale *end minor spoiler*), we shouldn’t expect this until late, late next year. And as for the excellent season finale, FX is tickled pink that, with 4.3 million viewers, the episode was the show’s highest rated one to date (just edging out the season two premiere).

Last bit of FX news involves “Nip/Tuck,” which is currently in the middle of its final season now. You watching this crap? I am, but only because I stuck with this damn show so long I might as well see it through. But it ain’t good. Anyway, the first half of this season ends on December 16. It was originally expected that the second half of the season wouldn’t drop until well into 2010, but FX has decided to start it on January 6, instead, meaning the “break” amounts to less than a month. This is probably so that FX can be done with this garbage as soon as possible.

Finally, in non-FX news, it has been announced that “Torchwood” has gotten its fourth season. And it won’t be a miniseries season, like “Children of Earth,” but a full-fledged 13-episode season. And John Barrowman is confirmed to be signed for the whole series, as well. I’m only now just about to start watching season two, but (unfortunately for me and SPOILERS) I know that a good number of the regular characters are no longer alive by the end of “Children of Earth,” so it’s safe to say that there will be some fresh blood joining Captain Jack’s new adventures.

Justified?

What, was Certified already taken?

The good thing about Torchwood is that it keeps getting better as it matures. Now if someone could just tell John Barrowman to quit Botoxing his face, I'll be happy. Laugh lines make you sexy.

I cannot wait for the new season of SOA after this finale. I was screaming with Jax at the end there and I really want to see the sons go to Belfast!

On another note: Whenever I see this "Justified" I hear the faint refrain of a song (sounds a little like what a Boyband would sing?). I have no idea who sings it, anyway I keep imagining Seth Bullock singing in this nice falsetto...Great picture, in my mind anyway!

About Torchwood:

Please, KILL GWEN, kill her and make it bloody, mangle her, rip her apart so as to make sure she never, ever, comes back.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at December 3, 2009 9:37 AM

BSlim, I'm SO with you. I vote we take Gwen and Rhys, tie them up, and feed them to foxes. Then Captain Jack can watch and laugh and we can all dance madly around a giant bonfire.

Posted by: esme at December 3, 2009 9:45 AM

Could not agree more, BarbadoSlim. She was at least useful in Children of Earth, but goddamn she irritated me the rest of the time.

Posted by: kalexal at December 3, 2009 9:46 AM

SOA is the best damn show on TV. Jack Bauer has some serious competition for my loyalties right now. I am so bummed that we have to wait so long for next season. Thank goodness 24 is back on in January.

Posted by: Whorish Mouth at December 3, 2009 9:47 AM

HOW. FUCKING. AWESOME. was Sons this season? Whorish and I watched the first season on DVD to freshen up for season 2. The worst part about Tuesday night...it was the season finale. i haven't looked forward to new seasons of a show like this since Season 1 of LOST ended.

Posted by: PissBoy at December 3, 2009 9:47 AM

Hey you Whore! Get out of my thought bubble!!!

Posted by: PissBoy at December 3, 2009 9:49 AM

HAHA that's why I heart the Pissboy.

Posted by: Whorish Mouth at December 3, 2009 9:54 AM

You don't heart me. You heart my motorcycle when I hit the throttle.

Ridin' through this world.....all alone....

FINALLY seeing some love for SAMCRO on Pajiba! That finale was excellent. There's a damn good interview with Kurt Sutter about the finale and show here. Answers a lot of questions and says where the show is going next year. Cannot wait. If Charlie Hunnam and Katy Sagal don't get Emmy noms this year the Academy needs to burn.

I especially liked how Hunnam handled the final scene on the dock. His breakdown and scream were both heartbreaking and seemed completely natural. As opposed to a similar scene by Sean "The Ham" Penn in the incredibly overrated Mystic River.

Katy Segal is my hero.

Posted by: Whorish Mouth at December 3, 2009 10:16 AM

So now I have to watch SOA also..

Great, I hardly had time for sleep allready.

Posted by: Magiel at December 3, 2009 10:23 AM

Oh you definitely have to watch SOA! So nervewrecking and heartwrenching. But at the same time: Violence! Men in leather! On bikes! Squee!

Posted by: Phedre at December 3, 2009 10:26 AM

Men in Leather is a pretty good argument, heh heh

I watched the first ep long time ago, and really liked it, but I watch to much allready, and recently started living with Me Luv, and she *gasp* want attention also.

Tsssk, women

Posted by: Magiel at December 3, 2009 10:32 AM

HATE the name Justified, but, well, hell we all know I will watch the Olyphant do ANY variation on Seth Bullock. I'd especially like some of the variations he used on Alma......

So, basically....Olyphant AND Barrowman both in this post? HOT SEXY MENS????? You know what that means?

*birthday bunk*

Posted by: dammitjanet at December 3, 2009 10:34 AM

Well, judging by the amount of attention I pay to my Son of Anarchy at home after watching the show you should consider watching it with The Luv...

Posted by: Phedre at December 3, 2009 10:36 AM

Hmmmmmmmmm, good tip, Ph.

I even own leather pant.
And she survived Se7en three times, so maybe the violence isn't a problem..

Posted by: Magiel at December 3, 2009 10:43 AM

Tyler - I couldn't agree more. Hunnam's presence on the show really sells it to me.

Maggie Siff's performance this week was pretty impressive too.

I really enjoy Henry Rollins and loved hating him so much... I just wish they had developed his character more. I felt like the show could have developed more depth with his conflicts. *shrug*

Posted by: Lubeg at December 3, 2009 10:43 AM

Lubeg, you know what really scared me about Rollins character? His children! The fact that I could totally see this indoctrination happening somewhere in US or elsewhere really gave me the shivers. And the tat on his chest...Aargh!

Posted by: Phedre at December 3, 2009 10:50 AM

This is the last season of Nip/Tuck? I thought they had at least another season left. Oh well, it's probably a good thing.

Posted by: annoyingmouse at December 3, 2009 10:53 AM

Anybody else agree....the tattoo parlor sequence...the silence right before what happened....CHILLING.

Posted by: PissBoy at December 3, 2009 11:33 AM

I got sucked into SOA so late - I've only seen the last 4 episodes, but I loved them. Going to have to rent the rest of the shows.

I don't give a shit what they do with the storyline; as long as Captain Jack is back I'm golden.

Posted by: Cindy at December 3, 2009 11:40 AM

I found a HOTTEST interracial club =MixedConnect--*__*--C 0 M=for black Women and white Men, or black Men and white Women, to interact with each other. Interracial is not a problem here, but a great merit to cherish!

Posted by: flaky at December 3, 2009 12:26 PM

I don't give a shit what they do with the storyline; as long as Captain Jack is back I'm golden.

And as long as they don't bring fucking Ianto back. He's more useless than taint lint and whinier than a Twihard walking up to a sold out showing of New Moon.

Posted by: stardust at December 3, 2009 12:43 PM

stardust, that was pure poetry.

I 43rd the desire for Gwen & her bad giant-gap Madonna teeth to die a horrible, horrible death. Her and her Paul Blart-wannabe hubster both. In fact, all I really need is for David Tennant to decide to just move over to Torchwood as an alternate Doctor while the new Twihard Doctor takes over on Who. Then, we could have some awesome Captain/Doctor action.

*back to bunkage*

Posted by: dammitjanet at December 3, 2009 1:07 PM

Wales would be damn angry if they killed Gwen, she's like their queen.
Theyd break out Christian Bale and Anthony Hopkins as their evil leaders. The rugby team full of valley boys would be riding dragons. Tom Jones and Catherine Jenkins would be wailing the call to arms over the mountain tops and then Prince Charles will lead an army of sheep over Offa's Dyke.

This is what I live in fear of every day.

SPOILERS FOR TORCHWOOD/DW SEASON 4:

Maybe they're going to recruit Jenny for Torchwood? I know the actress is doing Spooks right now, but that's the beauty of regeneration, right?

Posted by: Phedre at December 3, 2009 10:50 AM

One of the most interesting aspects of your point is just how against type that role was for Rollins. He frequently rails about the silliness of race-hate and the KKK in particular in his spoken word presentations. I was rather impressed with the intesity he put into a role so contrary to his personal beliefs and very much a part of the reason I would have liked to see Weston's conflicts play out. I can't help but think Rollins personal take on that type of person would have really added some interesting dimension to what was taking place.

Anybody else agree....the tattoo parlor sequence...the silence right before what happened....CHILLING.

Posted by: PissBoy at December 3, 2009 11:33 AM

Agreed, 100%. The fact that the silent chill extended to the dignified manner in which Weston accepted his fate just made the entire scene so much more intense for me. You couldn't help but respect him a little bit for that. Despite his dignity, though, there was no way to undo who he was.

Did anyone else find his end just slightly... symbolic? Especially that last moment in which Weston's character is on screen? It seemed to come right out and proclaim he flushed his whole life down the toilet.

After Halloween, to which I participated without having a costume, one of my friends looked at me and said, "You know, all you'd have to do is get a Sons patch and you're already Opie."

That made me happy to no end, considering Opie is my favorite character. You heard me. Suck it Jax. Pussy.

Posted by: DeistBrawler at December 3, 2009 5:27 PM

It took me a while to get into Sons the fist season but I started watching regularly about halfway through. Then the second season came out swinging and never stopped. Katey Sagal is a fuckin goddess and every other character is so well drawn and acted, it's awesome. I have been touting this show to anyone who will listen and I give FX major kudos for putting its faith in a show based on merit as opposed to stellar ratings. But having to wait almost a year for next season blows. I hope Olyphant can get me through this tough time.

Posted by: MG at December 3, 2009 5:47 PM

...did the Olyphant show have to change its name from Lawman to Justified because of the Steven Seagal show?

If so, that would make me sad. I like to think if there was an Olyphant/Seagal staredown, it would end very differently.

Posted by: Daniel Hall at December 3, 2009 8:43 PM

Deist...we are in a fight. I love Opie, don't get me wrong, and his storyline has been very compelling. But nobody blasphemes Jax. Nobody.
Lubeg-yes yes yes. Definitely feeling the Rollins love and totally agree with that last comment. That scene was fantastic.
Pissboy played a song he found last night that Katy Segal actually sings on the show's soundtrack-it's Son of a Preacher Man. She is more my hero now than ever before.

2 things about the show are killing me right now:
********SPOILER***********
.
..
...
....
I'm sooooooooooo bummed about Half-Sack. Like, seriously bummed. I was so looking forward to him getting patched.
And having to wait until freaking September blows.

Posted by: Whorish Mouth at December 4, 2009 7:41 AM

I love my Sons!

Never mind the botox, Barrowman needs to sort his hair out. Last time I saw him on tv his roots were showing and he had waaaay too much gel spiking it up.
I'm shallow. I like my Jack to look good while he fucks any species that will lay still long enough.....
