I Lost on Jeopardy! But I Fell in Love

Exclusive: Tobey Maguire Attached to Prisoners of Trebek / Dustin Rowles

Tobey Maguire, through his production company, Maguire Entertainment, is developing Prisoners of Trebek for 20th Century Fox. Maguire is attached to star in the film, which is about a man who attempts to master “Jeopardy,” but ultimately finds himself and falls in love. It’s based on a true story; William Wheeler (The Hoax) wrote the script.

Not much more is known about the film, except that it will be a heartstring-playing pic with elements of a Charlie Kaufman film. Mark Gordon (Saving Private Ryan, 2012) is producing, and the search is on for directors. A couple of names have been mentioned, including Goran Duric (The Wristcutters) and Raymond De Felitta (Two Family House), but they’re really looking for an A-list director to take on the project.

The project seems to suit Maguire, inasmuch as I can envision him as a “Jeopardy” guru, and he certainly has the talent (see his phenomenal performance in Brothers), but he’s never really taken a romantic lead before. If there are, indeed, Kaufman elements, then at least this one wouldn’t be a traditional romantic drama.

Maguire has several projects in the pipeline (Including Spider-man 4 and Gary Ross’ The Details, which is in pre-production), but he doesn’t otherwise have a go project beyond that. I don’t know where Prisoners of Trebek would line up among his future projects, though I would think it would depend on who they get as a director, and how their schedules work out.

...I wonder how you deal with yourself going from producing Saving Private Ryan to producing 2012. Must be harsh.

Is this based on Bob Harris's Trapped in Trebekistan? Because that was a really enjoyable book. That does not need to be made into a movie.

I love this project so much I want to ask it answers and then mount it like Seabiscuit.

am I the only one who's first reaction was "I hope they get Will Ferell to play Trebek." I mean, they'll probably just use the real Trebek, and that's cool and all. But I think I'd still prefer Ferell.

Suck on it Trebek. Suck it long, and suck it hard.

"...it will be a heartstring-playing pic with elements of a Charlie Kaufman film."

Am I the only one who experiences a pang of dread every time you hear that something has 'elements of a Charlie Kaufman film' but isn't written by Charlie Kaufman? I'm not sure anyone else can pull it off.

Ferrel? I guess, but for my money, it was Eugene Levy who came first.

Anyone remember the X-Files episode in which the government would send in the Men in Black to scare off anyone who had seen too much, and one of the MIB was Trebek? "You're getting very tired now, very...sleepy." They figured that anyone who mentioned Alex Trebek in their UFO story would immediately be discounted as insane. I always wondered if we were supposed to believe that the real Trebek was moonlighting as a MIB or if they used some kind of clone.
