I Love You, Always. Time is Nothing.

Stills from The Time Traveler's Wife / Dustin Rowles

Trade News | April 21, 2009 | Comments (40)

We haven’t spoken a lot about the filmic adaptation of The Time Traveler’s Wife around here, mostly because there hasn’t been a lot to say. I, like many of you, fucking loved that book, and the way it deftly mixed together time travel and a really solid romantic relationship, which of course that means it’s probably doomed to failure on the big screen.

Still, the cast they put together — though not exactly how I’d have pictured it — would seem to work: Eric Bana will play Henry DeTamble while Rachel McAdams will play Claire Abshire. I don’t know a lot about the director, Robert Schwentke, except that he directed the fairly mediocre Flightplan. But there shouldn’t be a lot of special effects involved (even for a time-travel movie), but for some aging. So what’s the hold up here? Why does The Time Traveler’s Wife keep getting pushed back on the schedule? It was once slated for early this year, but now it’s been scheduled for August. Is that to better take advantage of summer audiences?

Anyway, the delays aren’t heartening, but we do have some images from the film, which should at least help you to get comfortable with the image you have in your minds from the book and what you can expect on the big screen. Nothing exciting here, but these should be enough to keep you satiated until the trailer comes out.

I'd like to plow Rachel McAdams, unmercifully.

Still won't see this though, eh maybe when they play it on TBS for the 100th time.

No pictures of Eric when he's big and green?

Posted by: Brian at April 21, 2009 4:57 PM

I have the lowest of low expectations of this even though I adore the two leads. I just love TTW so very much.

...There is a God!

Posted by: Jeremy Feist at April 21, 2009 4:58 PM

Yes, it does look rather doomed, much like their relationship.

It would do me good if I re read The Time Traveler's Wife in the near future. It was SO good the first time and I sped through it, perhaps too fast. Still, it's one of my favorite books.
I agree Dustin, the movie is not how I pictured when reading the book. Personally, it should go something like this:
Lauren Ambrose as Claire
Peter Sarsgaard as Henry
Directed by Michel Gondry.
Wouldn't it be cool for Gondry to return to bittersweet romance movies that are jumbled and jump around? Eternal Sunshine is without a doubt my second favorite movie, so part of it comes from an obsessive fan. Still, Gondry is unique and truly a wonderful director.

Posted by: Kamikaze Feminist at April 21, 2009 5:14 PM

This really doesn't look very good. I just don't see the connection between these two.

Am I the only one that thinks Eric Bana aint even all that?

Posted by: Trini at April 21, 2009 5:17 PM

I'm with BarbadoSlim as far as Rachel McAdams goes. I'd do things to that poor girl that'd make here doctor weep.

Posted by: Xtreme at April 21, 2009 5:18 PM

Seems to have fallen into the same black hole as "The Road". Coincidentally "The Time Traveler's Wife" is next on my list of books for the Cannonball Read after "Go Go Girls of the Apocalypse".

Posted by: TylerDFC at April 21, 2009 5:22 PM

I love both these actors (Bana is #1 on my Freebies List), and I loved the book, but I'm still scared about this. There's no way it can be as good as the book was, but hopefully it won't fall too short. Seems like it would be incredibly hard to translate into a movie, but...well, here's to hoping. I've been waiting months for a trailer, so it better not get pushed back again. It's been sitting around for fucking AGES.

Posted by: figgy at April 21, 2009 5:34 PM

Thanks for the pics. I really want to see this (shameless love for Bana & McAdams) but I think I'll check the book out first. Most likely it will ruin me on the film, but whatever.

Posted by: Brie at April 21, 2009 5:36 PM

I need to put this book on "list of books I haven't read yet, but probably should". And yes, there's enough that I need a list.

The movie will happen after the book.

He is so delicious. MMMMM!

Posted by: Chickaboom at April 21, 2009 5:48 PM

Clare. No "i" in the character's name.

Posted by: Ariel at April 21, 2009 5:49 PM

IF YOU DON'T FORWARD THIS TO YOUR FIVE BEST FRIENDS SOMETHING BAD WILL HAPPEN TO YOUR SISTER'S FRIEND'S COUSIN'S NEIGHBOR'S TEACHER'S DAUGHTER'S DOG'S VET'S NIECE'S PEN PAL'S ACQUAINTANCE'S HUSBAND'S CAR'S DEALER'S MANAGER'S HAIR STYLIST'S CHECKBOOK'S PEN BUT IF YOU DO THEN THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE WILL FINALLY BE RELEASED AND YOU WILL FIND HAPPY LOVE FOREVER UNTIL YESTERDAY WITH YOUR ONE TRUE LOVE WHO MUST BE AT LEAST 21 YEARS OR OVER AND A LEGAL RESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF MEXICO VOID WHERE PROHIBITED

Posted by: io at April 21, 2009 6:15 PM

I'm indifferent to both actors and I just don't need a movie.

Posted by: Jay at April 21, 2009 6:21 PM

I was reading Entertainment Weekly today and they asked Rachel McAdams about the film's delayed release. Here's what she said:

"We were waiting for Eric's hair to grow to do reshoots. Eric had gone off and played the villain in Star Trek and had to shave his head. It was just one of those things."

Take that for what you will.

Posted by: littlesilverboulder at April 21, 2009 7:50 PM

I am down with McAdams as Clare, though I think her hair needs to be a little more dramatic (they are always talking about her hair in the book). Eric Bana just does not strike me as a Henry type--Henry is supposed to be kind of fucked up and dangerous looking, not a chiseled leading-man type. However this is the kind of movie I should stay away from because of what a fangirl I am for the book. I will never be satisfied and therefore should keep my opinions to myself. Sorry Pajiba! Not this day.

Posted by: Cara at April 21, 2009 7:54 PM

Eric Bana, NOOOOOO. He's a 5 year old boy's interpretation of what a sexy man is. Henry is the sexiest literary character I've ever read. We need a nice scrawny young fellow. I don't think I want to ruin this book for myself, which is a shame, because Rachel McAdams is a decent choice.

Posted by: Not Goldie at April 21, 2009 8:55 PM

Agreed on the bad Bana- love the guy, but for this? Hell no. I'm Australian and watched Bana back when he was playing lovable idiots with blond mullets on a sketch comedy show; I can bury those memories deep enough to buy him in many roles, but not as Henry. Which is a crying shame, because I like McAdams for the role of Clare and that girl's got almost enough zing to carry the romance by herself. Almost.

Posted by: jimsical at April 21, 2009 9:14 PM

Eric Bana is to my loins what unsalted fettuccini alfredo is to my mouth.

Ew.

Posted by: Clee Shay at April 21, 2009 9:17 PM

So, I should read this then? Is it going to make me cry?

Posted by: lizzieborden at April 21, 2009 9:19 PM

Dunno if I'll see the film as there's almost no way that it can measure up to the book, which makes me cry every single time that I read it. That said, it's the only book that has ever had that effect on me. But I'll probably end up seeing it anyway, out of the hope that they can capture some of the magic of the book.

Posted by: ruby at April 21, 2009 9:31 PM

havent even read the book yet but have bought it twice for my sister's as a birthday present. every explanation of the plot seems like a perfectly brilliant sci-fi romance that with enough goodwill would make a profit in hollywood. id rather watch this than half the *insert pun* and two *boring leads* (TM) that seem to perpetually fill our cinemas and destroy the minds of our future...

God(if he exists)topus and alcohol (praise be to Dionysus) is making me speak like more of a pillock than usual.

Night night

Posted by: jim of the lower case at April 21, 2009 9:40 PM

lizzie, it WILL make you cry. But it's beautiful. And because I want to pimp, my review of it got posted a while back:

Posted by: figgy at April 21, 2009 9:52 PM

I know it won't be half as good as the book, but if it at least captures some of the spirit, I'm ok with it. I love the fuck out of TTW, and I adore Rachel McAdams, and damn it I WANT THIS MOVIE NOW.

Posted by: Gabs at April 21, 2009 11:12 PM

I agree with Cara - Eric Bana just doesn't fit right for me. I desperately wanted more of an Adrien Brody type for the movie.

I'll still watch though.

Posted by: Lisa S at April 22, 2009 2:51 AM

I think Kamikaze Feminist mentioned this, but Peter Sarsgaard would have been mouth-wateringly good. When I read the book, I actually imagined him as Henry. But I think McAdams is an excellent fit.

Also, Eric Bana was in The Other Boleyn Sister, which was just one massive FAIL of a literary adaptation. Makes me nervous.

Posted by: G-Peach at April 22, 2009 4:36 AM

Kamikaze Feminist I went to an author talk where Audrey Niffenegger was talking about her book and mentioned possible film versions and she said she saw Lauren Ambrose as her Claire. Since then, so did I, but I like Rachel McAdams so hopefully she'll be good.

I loved this book so much, I'm not sure any film adaptation could do it justice, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Sadly Bana is nothing like the Henry I had in mind.

Posted by: Carrie at April 22, 2009 5:08 AM

I cannot. First, Eric Bana simply does not do it for me. And The Time Traveler's Wife makes me weepy. When I get weepy, my nose gets stuffy. I use lots of tissues. Make it go away.

Posted by: greer at April 22, 2009 7:24 AM

As long as Saarsgaard played down the creepiness, a lot, he would have been a near perfect Henry. However, those scenes with the little girl might have been uncomfortable as he leered at her with his "I don't know whether to f**k you or eat you" eyes. Bana is not what I pictured.
Rachel McAdams is too bland to play Claire. Lauren Ambrose? She certainly has the hair to pull it off.

Posted by: Kballs at April 22, 2009 8:17 AM

I cried so hard when I read this book. Then I realized I had no idea why I cried.

I'm sorry, but I don't like Henry. I didn't really like Clare. I loooooooved the plot and the idea and the technique and the setting and the daughter, I just...didn't like them as people.

And I still sobbed like a bitch.

Posted by: JakesAlterEgo at April 22, 2009 8:56 AM

What I want to know is, are they going to have the scene of Henry's mutual masturbation with himself in it????
Giggity.

Posted by: Janey at April 22, 2009 11:08 AM

I just can't get behind a book in which the protagonist's hair plays a major role.

I'm always looking for justification for my arbitrary unwillingness to read certain books...though I did start this and found it boring.

Posted by: samantha t at April 22, 2009 11:14 AM

This book simply infuriated me. I finished it just to finish it. Too many rules that they kept breaking.

If you are a mega-logical person like me, don't read the book.

Posted by: Robin at April 22, 2009 11:14 AM

I just don't need a movie.

Me neither, the one that played in my head while I read the book was perfect.

And lizzie - no, you won't cry. You will bawl. Like a baby. Like you've lost your best friend. Like your soul has been ripped out.

Posted by: Kolby at April 22, 2009 11:21 AM

Samantha: What about books where the smell of a girls hair is a character?

Posted by: Sweetie Dahling at April 22, 2009 11:30 AM

God, I HATED this book. So many hours I'll never get back...

Posted by: Amy at April 22, 2009 12:18 PM

G peach, I also agree about Ms. McAdams, she is a good fit, IN MY PANTS.

Posted by: David McTaintwaffle at April 22, 2009 5:14 PM

i thought of Adrien Brody too for Henry's part!

despite that, i'm gonna give this movie a chance.
