Green Lantern, Thor Casting News/Rumors / TK

Trade News | October 19, 2009 | Comments (17)

Well, the comic book movie news gets both interesting and completely bizarre.

First, the good news. It appears that Jackie Earle Haley, to be seen next as Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street remake, has been cast as Sinestro in the DC Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern picture (to be directed by Martin Campbell). This is outstanding news and gives me more hope for the flick — Haley’s got the chops to play Sinestro, an alien superpowered bad guy who is a sort of fallen angel from the Green Lantern Corps.

In the bizarre news category, rumors are a-flyin’ regarding two new additions to Marvel’s upcoming Kenneth Branagh-helmed Thor picture. No characters have been mentioned, but the rumor that stumbled out of the German edition of GQ is that those two new additions are Jude Law (huh. OK) and Robert DeNiro.

I’m sorry, whatthefuckdidyoujustsay?

Robert DeNiro? Really? I mean, I guess he did Stardust, so he’s certainly not above genre pictures — actually, it’s modern DeNiro — the sonofabitch isn’t above anything these days. But yeah.

Anyway, take it with a grain of salt right now. I’ll believe it when it comes from a more official source.

C'mon. You know you love the idea of Bobby D. as Hogun the Grim.

I honestly have no idea what part he'll play. I don't recall any of the Marvel stories or Norse myths mentioning an elderly Italian.

I hope the Jackie Earl Haley rumor is true. I love that his career has finally come around again. He was great back in the day in "The Bad News Bears" and "Breaking Away" and, despite varying views and opinions on "Watchmen" as a whole, there was no doubt that he totally, totally nailed Rorschach and Kovacs.

Good on him.

As for the Dinero Thor rumor, I don't see it. Then again, I really never read too many Thor comics. The whole Asgaard thing never really interested me comics-wise.

I don't recall any of the Marvel stories or Norse myths mentioning an elderly Italian.

Then you, sir, clearly missed out on the issue where Thor battles Mussolini, and saves Italy from fascism.

DeNiro will play an aging, adventuresome Italian pining for the glory days of the Roman Empire who becomes the greatest beardstylist of all. His name will be Tiberius Frenchbraid.

Hey, if Connery could play a Spaniard, then....

No, actually, it's still kinda weird. But...we'll see.

It appears that Haley has said it's a rumor and he knows nothing about it.

"Aren't you a little short for a Lantern?"

So DeNiro as Odin? Yes? Can we just think about this for a little bit? And Jude Law plays Loki. A charming BRITISH Loki. Done and Done.

DeNiro as Odin!!

"You make the move...it's your move...try it you...

...You talkin' ta me?...talkin ta me?...Well who the hell else are you talking to?...Well I'm the only Aesir here...

...listen you Frost Giants, Fire Demons, you Bifrost Bastards...here is a Chieftain God who would not take your Ragnarock..."

--sorry, I couldn't help it, and c'mon, someone was gonna do it.

"Kenneth Branagh-helmed Thor picture.."

Take moment and think just how "off" that sounds.

I have an issue of "The Invaders" where Thor, briefly, fought for Nazi Germany. It's a long story involving Hitler convincing Thor to defend the Germanic peoples who once worshiped him (though I thought the Norse were mostly Scandanavian), but eventually Cap got him turned around. It was really kind of weird in retrospect.

...Marvel’s upcoming Kenneth Branagh-helmed Thor picture.

Every time I hear this it's like a fire-breathing bear on a tricycle rolls through my head and starts banging pots, completely obliterating any memory of it. It's just as new and unusual as the first time.

Does anyone remember this Thor: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thor_(band)

"Gotta Keep the Dogs Away"
This band was even cheeseier than Anvil.

In related news, the Green Lantern was found dead this morning after a tragic banana peel accident, at the scene was a deranged southern man, who was too busy laughing hysterically to provide credibility as a witness.

Well over on IMDB they already have actors for Jane Foster, Thor, Loki, and Sif. So Loki is taken by some guy named Tom Hiddleston. It also has Stellan Skarsgard and Colm Feore mentioned. Also, Haley says he hasn't heard anything about it http://www.cinemaspy.com/article.php?id=3389 You also neglected to mention the rumor that Superman will be in it. Oh god...needles...in my eyes...needles.

I want to look inside jM's head, because it sounds like a fun place. Once you get past the panda rape, that is.

DeNiro as Odin??? That role belongs to none other than BRIAN BLESSED

Posted by: ruru at October 19, 2009 8:13 PM

Actually, from what I heard. Stan Lee wants to be Odin.
