bh-90210.jpgLast night saw the season premieres of “Prison Break,” “Gossip Girl” and “One Tree Hill,” meaning the fall season is now upon us. Check back tomorrow for my annual take on the fall schedule (the short version of which is “meh”). But in the meantime, here’s a list of the shows premiering over the next week:

Tonight (9/2): “90210” (CW, 8 p.m.) and the final season of “The Shield” (FX, 10 p.m.).

Wednesday (9/3): “Bones” (Fox, 8 p.m.), “America’s Next Top Model” (CW, 8 p.m.), “Top Design” (Bravo, 10 p.m.) and “Sons of Anarchy” (FX, 10 p.m.).

Thursday (9/4): Football football football!!! And “Kitchen Nightmares” (Fox, 8 p.m.).

Friday (9/5): … sigh … “Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader” (Fox, 8 p.m.).

Saturday (9/6): The 21st season of “Cops” (Fox, 8 p.m.).

Sunday (9/7): A sneak preview of “Hole in the Wall” (Fox, 8 p.m.), “True Blood” (HBO, 9 p.m.) (I’ll have a review for you on Thursday) and “Entourage” (HBO, 10 p.m.). MTV’s also got the 2008 Video Music Awards for those that care.

Not much to get your panties wet, you know. Although lord knows I’m hoping that “90210” turns out to be an abysmally entertaining train wreck (but it better derail fast, as I can’t imagine having the stamina to stick with that shite for more than an episode or too, Jessica Walter or no Jessica Walter).

Oh, and of course the Republican National Convention will be on all week. They’ve got a tough game to play this week, following last week’s Democrat spectacle and dealing with the Gustav/Hannah business (why does Mother Nature hate New Orleans so?), but us political wonks gotta watch anyways.

Where does the term "wonk" come from? I have a huge blind spot when it comes to political things. So many words just sound fake, like pundit or gubernatorial.

You can have my review for 'True Blood' today for free....utter crap. Looking forward for the Shield though.

Somewhat unrelated, my dad was a huge COPS fan back in the day and he'd watch it while I was still of a young and impressionable age. One day I looked at him and asked "Daddy, do you have to take your shirt off to get arrested?"

As far as I'm concerned, the fall TV season doesn't start till I get back The Office and Heroes. Yes, I'm still drinking the Heroes kool-aid.

Where does the term "wonk" come from?

Posted by: Optimus Rhyme at September 2, 2008 10:41 AM

Thanks for sending me to the Online Etymology Dictionary, Optimus Rhyme. According to the OED, "wonk" is a shorthand version of the British slang term "wanker" (a lovely little euphemism for an onanist) coined in the 1950s or 1960s. Makes sense to me.

Posted by: Che Grovera at September 2, 2008 10:54 AM

Pandit might be a Hindi term for wiseman or soothsayer, said "pundit". Speakers of Sacred Bullshit, I suppose.
"Wonk" may simply be the word "Know" backwards.

Posted by: OntarioGrown at September 2, 2008 10:55 AM

Is this supposed to be nay good?
"Sons of Anarchy" (FX, 10 p.m.).

Posted by: Brian at September 2, 2008 11:23 AM

Genny (also Rusty): "Daddy, do you have to take your shirt off to get arrested?"

Why yes, yes, I do! (Peeks down front of shirt to make sure boobies are still there.)

Posted by: BWeaves at September 2, 2008 11:25 AM

Mother Nature hates New Orleans because it is below sea level. She wants her land back.

Posted by: Stew at September 2, 2008 11:34 AM

i didn't know that Cops was still on the air.

i will dvr 90210 so i can fast forward the non-cheesy parts. plus, i want to see if Tristan Wilds can play a character with a soul. i just finished the 5th season of The Wire this weekend and Michael kind of grew on me.

Posted by: pq at September 2, 2008 11:41 AM

How about some love for "Gavin and Stacey" on BBCAmerica on Tuesdays (premiered last week)? Well acted, no laugh track, dry humor, people live in realistic houses (when's the last time you saw that on a sit-com?). Come on.

Posted by: PaddyDog at September 2, 2008 11:52 AM

My state Secretary of Education is going to be on "Fifth Grader".

That just doesn't seem like a good idea. Look, Alex P. Keaton froze and failed when his college bowl team was put on TV. This is not a good risk to take.

Posted by: Jay at September 2, 2008 11:58 AM

No comment on the subject at hand.

BUT WHAT THE HELL'S UP WITH THIS NEW FORMAT?! It's not permanent, is it? If so... bleh. Blehbitty bleh blah!

Half the fun of this site is reading through the initial comments, on through to the absurdist comments, and eventually arriving at "what the hell are they talking about" comments. This bite-sized chunk of information format is used to death. Gimme a goddamed rant and/or full article...

Posted by: Skittimus Maximus at September 2, 2008 12:02 PM

Whoo, Bones! That is all.

No, really, that is all. *sigh* Must sit tight and wait for the rest of the good stuff to trickle in, I guess.

Posted by: meaux at September 2, 2008 12:07 PM

I know that I'll be ostracized at the work
water cooler, but I just can't work up any
enthusiasm for the new season of "Heroes".

Sorry G(aR).

Posted by: Drake at September 2, 2008 12:19 PM

As ever, Skit made my point much, much better than I could.

Posted by: Jay at September 2, 2008 12:21 PM

Some interesting theories on the wonks.
And I second Skit on that... Or else I'm thirding Jay. Either way, I had to check my calendar when I saw this new format. There's no September 2nd, Day After Labor Day's Fools Day, right?

Posted by: Optimus Rhyme at September 2, 2008 12:26 PM

Agreed. I'm assuming that this format is some temporary way of dealing with a Web upgrade or something. Much of the Pajiba fun is the bunching of information that permits our gracious reviewers to meta-reference themselves into next year and the organic flow of comments addressing multiple issues at once.

Posted by: PaddyDog at September 2, 2008 12:34 PM

FootballFootballFootballFootball!! WOOOOOO!!!

Antonio Gates, you sexy sonofabitch, prepare to be captured by my TiFaux and manipulated in MovieMaker to star in such titles as In the End Zone, My Tight End, and Necessary Roughness: Penalty Declined.

Oh yeeeah.

Posted by: Mella at September 2, 2008 12:36 PM

BWeaves, I think there was a part of my small and unformed mind that thought you could get away with a crime if you kept your shirt on. These days I too will get arrested if I take my shirt off. Hooray for womanhood!

No offense taken, Drake. Frankly, if they can't turn things around in the first month I'll be giving up on Heroes this season too.

Posted by: Genny (also Rusty) at September 2, 2008 12:46 PM

I'm there too, (also Rusty). I'm all for Heroes coming back, and hopefully being better. I'll give it some time. But if it isn't everything it had better be, it's dead to me. Kind of like Lost.

Also, I too say Whoo! to Bones.

[small]I'm also going to watch 90210. But only the first episode. I swear.[/small]

Posted by: Anna von Beaverplatz at September 2, 2008 1:10 PM

Woo for Bones, but only if the season finale is excised from the continuity of the showverse.

Does anybody know if episodes of True Blood will be available for download anywhere? 'Cause I ain't got HBO.

Posted by: Girlnone at September 2, 2008 1:16 PM

I'm looking forward to checking out True Blood despite ato's review.

I third or fourth the new format complaint. Things are going to get bogged down quickly.

Posted by: Cindy at September 2, 2008 1:16 PM

I thought "wonk" stood for Wife Only, No Kids - someone too focused on a career for a big family. Not that it's a big deal.

Please don't tell me True Blood will suck. I like the books, and am desperately hoping that the f*ing Comcast vermin will fix my cable before the show is on so I can see it. Sure, it's modern day supernatural cheese, but maybe it'll be entertaining cheese.

Posted by: reemul at September 2, 2008 5:22 PM

Second to whoever mentioned Sons of Anarchy. I want to see how Hunnam does in a gritty role.

No to True Blood because stupid plot aside, Anna Paquin's "southern" accent makes me want to scream. It was unbelievable in X-Men and it hasn't changed.

Posted by: Brie at September 2, 2008 5:33 PM

mmm...The Shield...

that is all.

Posted by: garbo at September 2, 2008 6:21 PM

Isn't anyone excited that Janice Dickinson's Modeling agency is on for another season?

Anyone? Anyone?

Blergh. It's just me, I suppose.

No, it's not just you.

*cough* *cough*

*looks around*

MY. GOD.

Said it ain't so, Slim. Say it ain't so....

Posted by: Vermillion at September 2, 2008 8:00 PM

Brie,
was that Anna Paquin in the pilot? I didn't recognise her, if it was.
It was hard to follow because there were missing scenes, but what mostly put me off it was the lead. I could not warm to her at all, she seemed too hard-boiled for the character. I wanted to like it, as a vamp show has to be pretty bad to lose my interest (hello, Blood Ties), but, meh.

Posted by: Tarn at September 3, 2008 7:55 AM

I'm just glad Mad Men is back on. Now I've got my Joan fix I can breathe easy again...

Posted by: JenK at September 3, 2008 8:10 AM

Oh, The Pink Hulk, it's not just you... Janice is awesomely crazy!

That's totally gonna be me in a few years... insane and making young male models strip for me. I'm not sure how I'm going to make that happen, since I'm not the world's first supermodel and I don't have any money, but you know. I'll make it work.

Posted by: Anna von Beaverplatz at September 3, 2008 9:05 AM

By the way, did anybody (besides me) watch 90210 last night? I enjoyed it... I thought it was campy-good and over the top and kept its tongue in its cheek, yet managed to be enjoyably soapy at the same time.

Anyone?
