McG's This Means War Trailer: What a Waste of Three Perfectly Good White People

By Dustin Rowles | Posted Under Trade News | Comments (34)

McG’s This Means War went through a number of cast changes — including Sam Worthington, Bradley Cooper, Seth Rogen, Colin Farrell and Justin Timberlake — before settling on Chris Pine, Tom Hardy, and Reese Witherspoon, as two spies fighting over the same woman. But it didn’t really matter who McG recruited; it still looks like a goddamn McG movie, by which I mean an really expensive episode of “Chuck” with more famous people. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it is necessarily not a great thing. McG does feature-length, big-budget sitcoms, and while that may not be your thing, McG is really good at it (which is why he was such a terrible choice for Terminator Salvation). This Means War will be light, fluffy, and completely insubstantial. It’ll make $125 million, and then some dumbass will give McG the rein to The Third Man remake.

Well.....it could be worse....right?...RIGHT?!?!??!?!?!!

Dustin, please tell me it could be worse.....BECAUSE IF THIS IS THE WORST IT CAN GET, WELL THEN FUCK LIFE.

Posted by: Tenebrous at October 13, 2011 3:04 PM

So it's Spy vs. Spy for a chick?

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at October 13, 2011 3:10 PM

...crap. It looks entertaining, in a sort of "high kinetic action/wise-cracking, but by no means Oscar winning way". We look down upon that sort of thing around here, right?

Just take my gun and badge already.

Posted by: DoctorControversy at October 13, 2011 3:11 PM

You know, the basic premise isn't that uninteresting. And they have two great male leads.

But they also cast Witherspoon. That woman has no charisma whatsoever and it is totally unthinkable that two guys would go to "war" over her.

Posted by: FabMax at October 13, 2011 3:14 PM

How is Chris Pine still standing after a smackdown with Tom Hardy again?

And Reese is too old for Pine. Looks like we've found our new Sandra B.

And Tom Hardy needs a body change if he's gonna attempt romcom instead of squeezing one in between his MMA movie and TDKR.

Posted by: haplo at October 13, 2011 3:20 PM

come on, Tom Hardy, you're better than this.

Posted by: sailboat at October 13, 2011 3:22 PM

So Reese Witherspoon plays a weak-spined, airheaded, deceitful twatface?

As much as CHandler pisses me off sometimes, she totes deserves that hot piece of Pajiba Top-10 ass. Leave the hipster Shat-impersonater with the blond piece of inconsequential fluff.

Posted by: Donut Plains at October 13, 2011 3:28 PM

The only thought I had while watching this was, "Wow, Chris Pine has some major eyebrows."

Posted by: jimbob at October 13, 2011 3:30 PM

Chris Pine, Tom Hardy, and Reese Witherspoon, as two spies fighting over the same woman.

Reese's lack of charisma is perfect for this. She's a blank slate, a Mary Sue for women like me who dream about having Chris Pine and Tom Hardy fight over us.

Without seeing the trailer, and if I tilt my head and squint my eyes, this could almost be a Twilight for adults - with spies instead of supernatural beasties. Having McG as the director just makes it even better.

Posted by: MelBivDevoe at October 13, 2011 3:30 PM

I wouldn't say Reese lacks charisma, but I do think someone like Rachel McAdams would be much better suited for a role like this.

Posted by: Mel C. at October 13, 2011 3:42 PM

$125M? I dunno, you might be lowballing it, unless you think the Hardy accent will drive off more men than it will drive in women.

Fuck, why does this make me miss True Lies?

Posted by: idiosynchronic at October 13, 2011 3:59 PM

That's Reese Witherspoon in the photo above? Photoshop elves gone wild.

Also, Chris Pine and Tom Hardy can fight over me any day.

Posted by: MM at October 13, 2011 4:17 PM

Tom Hardy in a rom-com goes against everything I know to be right in this world. At least they let him keep that yummy yummy accent of his.

Posted by: Irina at October 13, 2011 4:25 PM

You see Tom Hardy's slightly raised eyebrow in the poster? That's him signalling, "Save me."

Someone kidnapped Tom and turned him into a robot brocom actor.

I'm coming, Tom! Hang on!

Posted by: SittingPat at October 13, 2011 5:09 PM

Poor Tom Hardy, who talked him into this? This sort of movie can have Chris Pine and Justin Timberlake, I don“t care. But Tom? Come on.. You can make it in Hollywood without those movies, look at Leo. Did he make movies like that? Ever? NO! *gets really loud because is way too emotionally involved*

Posted by: birdie at October 13, 2011 5:50 PM

Goddamn it. You shouldn't have mentioned McG getting his hands on a THIRD MAN remake. Someone will actually think it is a good idea

Posted by: Sean at October 13, 2011 5:50 PM

I'll say it...

This movie looks fucking fun.

There.

Take all that Tom Hardy shouldn't do a romcom and throw it out the goddamn window. Because if you watched that fucking trailer...I didn't get romcom at all. I got a bigger budget Rushmore that featured better pranks and two dudes literally beating the shit out of each other.

Posted by: DeistBrawler at October 13, 2011 6:06 PM

Oh, And Reese is too old for Pine.

Chris Pine is 31
Tom Hardy is 34
Reese Witherspoon is 35

If 4 years is too big of an age difference there is something seriously wrong with you.

Posted by: DeistBrawler at October 13, 2011 6:09 PM

It looks so stupid, but dammit, I'll pay for Tom Hardy on my screen. The only thing that saves from me from shame and Twihard-y (pun unintended) humiliation is that he eats guys like RPattz for pre-breakfast snack on the set of TDKR.

Posted by: Pants at October 13, 2011 6:41 PM

Please forgive me, what is TDKR?

Posted by: ang at October 13, 2011 7:44 PM

The. Dark. Knight. Rises.

Posted by: malikvlc at October 13, 2011 7:59 PM

Oh, duh. Thank you.

Posted by: ang at October 13, 2011 9:27 PM

The good part is that it marks Tom Hardy's having earned a place in mainstream Hollywood--a place rightfully his.

The sad part is, we're a moron culture when it comes to entertainment and that's the best we have to offer the guy.

He'd be better off staying over there soaking up great roles, lest he end up like Jude Law ... vapid and avoidable.

Posted by: Johnnyboy at October 13, 2011 10:08 PM

Come on, Tom Hardy, you're HOTTER than this.

Posted by: AM at October 13, 2011 10:29 PM

Err, If 4 years is too big of an age difference...

i was just basing that on looks alone and she looks like Pine's older sister with a bunch of kids on the side.

but goddamn! 31? 34? what the hell was Pine doing when Cruel Intentions came out?

Posted by: haplo at October 13, 2011 11:59 PM

Oh no- I think Tom Hardy (and yeah Pine is hot here) is going to make me watch a romantic comedy. I didn't realise how bad I had it until I considered sitting through a fucking Reese Witherspoon movie.

Thank god there's exposions at least.

Posted by: SAS at October 14, 2011 12:09 AM

I just watched the bit where Tom Hardy hits Chris Pine in the head with that pole about a dozen times, so I might go see this on the off chance that Pine gets hit with more poles. Or, you know, shot or something.

"I got a bigger budget Rushmore that featured better pranks"

Wha... did that really just happen? This really just got compared to Rushmore?

Seek help, son.

Posted by: Ghisent at October 14, 2011 11:04 AM

Sure did.

What was the plot of Rushmore? Two guys (well...one teenager) fall in love with the same woman. When these affections are realized they begin to perform pranks on one another to sabotage the chances of the other.

What is the plot of This Means War? Two guys fall in love with the same woman. When these affections are realized they begin to perform pranks on one another to sabotage the chances of the other.

Sure. Rushmore was more whimsical and featured that wonderful indie vibe, but the overall plot is identical. Well...not identical. You get the fucking idea.

Posted by: DeistBrawler at October 14, 2011 11:56 AM

Chris Pines hair, it, so, bouffant like, love the eyes tho...

This hallway was much more interesting in The Killing.

Posted by: Scott at October 14, 2011 12:57 PM

I don't even... Other than a painfully oversimplified, facile comparison of a couple of basic threads (that are probably shared by a ton of movies), the analogy is kind of pointless.

Posted by: Ghisent at October 14, 2011 4:38 PM

haplo, Tom Hardy only just comes up to Chris Pine's shoulder! Chris isn't the tallest of blokes but he makes Hardy look quite twee, which is a bit of a feat in a lot of people's minds, I know! Reese Witherspoon isn't the only one standing on a box in that photo.

You know sometimes you just need a fun movie, where not a lot of thinking is required. This looks slick and pretty and I don't need to think, so I will happily go along and see this.

If you ever want a laugh, pull out interviews with Chris Pine where he talks about his hair and eyebrows. The man laughs about them as much as everyone else does. (Plus I still have a major crush on his dad from CHiPS days when I was little, so he pretty much gets a pass from me)
